Community Feedback for Improving Itemization

One of the best aspects of D2 is the breadth and depth of the itemization. I would argue it’s probably the best in the genre. However, it’s not perfect and think the game would benefit from a few tweaks to breathe new life into the item hunt while making trading more interesting. With that said, I hope the developers consider a patch dedicated to improve itemization.


PREFACE

The purpose of this thread is to provide a framework for the developers to improve itemization within D2R. As this topic is complicated and has many moving parts, the specific improvements are broken down into manageable pieces with varying areas of focus. The recommended path forward is to implement these changes in a phased approach with each successive Ladder Season. As with each phase, it is imperative to test game updates and gather community feedback prior to release. The scope of the various phases is as follows:

1. IMPROVE BASE WEAPONS

The developers should improve base weapon damage and durability, in particular for elite weapons. In patch 1.10, they buffed monster life and didn’t adjust base weapon damage. Therefore, physical characters are notably weaker after the patch. In addition, they should also improve base weapon durability. It’d be nice to reduce the amount of trips to the blacksmith for repairs as many weapons break too quickly. Overall, the community would support a bump in base weapon damage and durability. How much, not sure. As a starting point, they could increase as shown below and adjust as necessary.

2. IMPROVE SUPERIOR WEAPONS

I urge the developers to consider making an adjustment to Superior Weapons. Instead of rolling with a laughable AR of +1-3, they should roll similar to the affixes as follows:

3. GENERAL CHANGES

The developers should consider a few general changes to improve itemization as follows:

Two-Handed Weapons

To improve the viability of 2H-weapons, they will now receive +2% enhanced damage per point of Strength and +10 attack rating per point of Dexterity as shown below. This change effectively makes investing in STR and DEX twice as effective for 2H-weapons as compared to 1H-weapons. This in not the end all be all solution, but does move the needle in the right direction for making 2H melee builds more competitive.

Medium & Heavy Armor

Medium and Heavy Armor provide a detrimental effect of reduced movement speed and have high STR requirements. To improve Medium and Heavy Armor to be more competitive vs. Light Armor, innate damage reduction could be granted. In addition, to further incentivize wearing heavier armor types, they could also have a reduced defense penalty when running as shown below. In the end, this would go along way to adding more value to the defense attribute while giving a defensive boost to melee characters.

Restrict Rare Affixes

To improve rare items, the developers should limit the most undesirable affixes to continue to spawn in normal and nightmare, but not hell. This can be done by setting affix max level to 66 as Blood Moor (H) has alvl of 67:

Miscellaneous Changes

Half Freeze Duration
Now stacks multiplicatively. For example, 2 pieces gives you 1/4 duration, 3 pieces gives you 1/8 duration, and so on. Of course, Cannot Be Frozen is still the ultimate goal.

Charged Items
Decrease cost of recharging items. Also, add new Prefix called “Recharge” that adds 1 Charge Every 30 Seconds. This Prefix can’t roll on an item unless it has a Charged Skill Suffix.

Charms
Unique charms (e.g. Annihilus) can no longer be sold to vendors to prevent accidents.

Throwing Potions
Damage now scales with character level.

Re-rolling Rare Items

The developers should change the recipe for re-rolling rare items from 6 P. Skulls to 3 P. Skulls. This change would allow more frequent rolls and allow re-rolling 4x2 rare items (e.g. War Pike, Grand Matron Bow, etc).

Horadric Cube Size

Developers should change size of Horadric Cube to be 4x4 (up from 4x3), and can contain up to 16 slots worth of items while taking up 4 slots itself. After all, a cube is symmetrical.

Display Item Level

Developers should add option to show iLvl on items and enabled via a toggle in the Options Menu, which makes crafting more convenient as well as re-rolling items for certain affixes.

Well thought, detailed, and all around good suggestions, just like your other topic (Comprehensive Wishlist for 2.5).

It’s very, very sad the implementation of which is very unlikely, this would really breathe a lovely fresh life to the game and makes me want to try a lot of things. You might be better of giving this list to original D2 mod creators.

good ideas and for the most part well put together. May have more success breaking it down into separate threads for discussion. like weapon changes as one horadric cube related including runewords then sets and uniques and finally general and overhaul.

As I’ve said before while support the idea of socket recipes, they should be 1 socket for rare/crafted items, and 1-2 sockets for magic items, as the socket quest currently grants. Superior Items are okay to get 2-3 sockets. I’d suggest this:

  • Unique/Set Ring + Lem + Perfect Skull + Unique/Set Weapon = Unique/Set Weapon (1 socket)
  • Rare/Crafted Ring + Hel + Flawless Skull + Rare/Crafted Weapon = Rare/Crafted Weapon (1 sockets)
  • Magic Ring + Eth + Normal Skull + Magic Weapon = Magic Weapon (1-2 sockets)
  • Any Ring + Eld + Normal Skull + Superior Weapon = Superior Weapon (2-3 sockets)
  • Unique/Set Amulet + Lem + Perfect Skull + Unique/Set Armor = Unique/Set Armor (1 socket)
  • Rare/Crafted Amulet + Hel + Flawless Skull + Rare/Crafted Armor = Rare/Crafted Armor (1 sockets)

Topaz should not be the gem for the Treasure theme. Because allowing gems to be used for something other than what their nature is when socketed is more flexible. So, if you want resistances, you can either socket a perfect Diamond, or you can craft using perfect Emeralds. Similarly, Treasure theme craft should use something other than Topaz for crafting. I have detailed suggested ideas for a Treasure theme crafting recipe. May I post my full Thoughts on Crafting post in your thread? It might be helpful to consolidate ideas in one thread.

Yes, please. The current Superior bonus to AR is laughable, please make it worth something.

I agree sets continue to need to be improved. I full some of your suggestions do not go far enough. For example, Hwanin’s Majesty was clearly intended to work with a spear base and an Amazon. The flavor of a Bill (European Polearm) is wrong for a set based on Korean myths, instead it should use the Yari (East Asian Spear) as the base. I have a detailed list here. Would it be okay if I posted my full thoughts on sets in this thread?

I don’t think blocking is correct flavor for weapons. I’d suggest “Parrying” instead, using the Dodge mechanic. While I agree that two handed weapons should have a greater bonus from strength, traditionally that has been 50% more, not triple. That would be a 1.5% bonus damage per point of Strength.

The main issue for Crossbows is that they are capped at a much slower frame rate (11) than bows (9 to 7). Allow Crossbows to reach a frame rate of 9 with enough Increased Attack Speed. That’s still slower than the bow frame rate for the Amazon and the Barbarian but would at least allow crossbows to compete with bows for Necromancers and Sorceresses.

Yes, please. This is the biggest issue holding rare Staves back and keeping them from competing with the Orb/Shield combo.

Charges need much more than this to become viable.

I have a recent post that looks at every item in the game that has charges, every charge that currently can roll on them, and suggests replacements for them to make charges actually viable. If you give me permission, I could post that in this thread as well.

The Swordguard gives a 20% bonus to increased chance of blocking. I think it would be fitting if other 2H-weapons could roll with this mod and block incoming attacks.

Lets not be stingy :stuck_out_tongue:. A 0.5% increase in damage per point of strength is not enough, lets give it an additional 2.0% bonus as 2H-weapons have been lackluster for decades.

I would like to see Crossbows have low strength and dexterity requirements for high damage / low rate of fire. While Bows have higher requirements for medium damage / high rate of fire. Bows and Crossbows should behave differently in game.

Traditionally, and in game, Crossbows require more Strength, while Bows require more Dexterity. And as I pointed out, 9 frames per an attack is still slower than bows. The problem is that the current 11 frames per an attack is over 57% more than the 7 frames per attack limit of bows. That’s just too big a difference to be overcome. The difference between 9 and 7 frames would mean Crossbows are still 28% slower than Bows, but that is a difference that might be overcome through other benefits.

I mean, you still have to get enough IAS to reach that 9 frames per attack limit that I am proposing, but right now it doesn’t matter how much IAS you get, you can never get faster attack than twice as long as bows, and so virtually no one uses Crossbows now. Crossbow initial attack speed is already slower for the higher damage crossbows, with the relatively faster Crossbows having lower damage. You’re saying that even with that balancing Crossbows have to be crippled even more so that you can never reach even 9 frames per an attack? While bows get to go down to 7 frames per an attack?

2 sockets is too good for just an hel, its one of the best affixes a circ can roll

TyM is 1/450k @300mf to drop from an unique monster
it needs to be the best armor around
so i suggest:

  • remove RiP

2 handed weapons, and armor definitely needs looking at.

Heavy armor makes you move super slow and nobody cares about the very slight increase in defense you get with it especially as they have a massive strength requirement too

They keep releasing content that massively buffs casters who were already the best in the game by far, and melee keeps being ignored.

I think that Lem rune is too cheap for obtein 1sox in items.

Since getting a socket is something quite interesting in uniques to make them more viable maybe the formula could depend on the quality of the item unique/set since using any manald or naguel ring is very well thought out.

We do desperately need hard to find unique items to be much stronger, at least in some cases. You should never feel like you found something extremely rare and be immediately disappointed before even identifying it.

I’ve made quite a few Enigmas, but have never even seen a Tyrael’s Might. If I ever found one, I’d want it to be much better. It’s so hard for anything to compete with +1 teleport. Not to mention all of the other great stats on Enigma.

So I give support to this thread. It’s a good start at least.

Agreed. Having carrion wind ring casting poison nova on striking seems alot more fun.

Well, consider that you can get 1 socket using the socket quest.

So how long does it take to get a new character to Act 5 and compare that to how long it takes to find the rune needed for the recipe. They should be roughly the same.

Not sure if that means a Lem rune is too cheap, but that’s the criteria to measure what is cheap and what isn’t.

I’ve maintained that Hell Haephaestus should have a chance to drop a hammer you can bring to Larzuk and you’d get your Add Socket Quest back. Just make it quest so it can’t go in the shared stash.

Make it like a 1/3 chance or 1/5.

Charles suggested changes to Unique Staves

Suggestions for Mang Song are about right, but missing one important thing. The -7% to -15% Enemy Cold Resistance needs to be changed to +7% to +15% Increased Cold Skill Damage. Since Cold Mastery already gives minus enemy Cold Resistance, what Cold Sorceresses need is +Cold Skill Damage, not more minus Enemy resistance.

For Ondal’s Wisdom I’d suggest also adding +3 Chilling Armor, +3 Energy Shield, and +3 Blaze as O-Skills. None of these really increase the killing power of the staff, but they add defensive and utility spells that any caster might find useful. The Chilling Armor also synergizes well with the + Defense on the Staff.

You only have Staves here in your suggested changes for Staves and Wands. Here are my suggested changes for wands:

Well, +1 Necromancer skills at level 5 is nice, but without staff mods you are better off with a wand bought from the vendors. Also, Life Steal on a wand is silly.

2: Add +3 to Dim Vision (Necromancer Only)
3: Add +3 to Teeth (Necromancer Only)
4: Add +3 to Clay Golem (Necromancer Only)

Arguably a +3 to Amp Damage would be more useful than Dim Vision, but since it’s called a Torch I figure the flavor argues for it. Besides, at level 5 a Necromancer probably already has a point in Amp Damage. This wand ought to be usable for a low level summoner.

Maelstrom:

Okay… this is a difficult one. A maelstrom is a huge damaging storm, more specifically a whirlpool, hurricane, or tornado. Doesn’t really have anything to do with Corpse Explosion or Iron Maiden. If anything, this wand seems more like it ought to be designed for a Wind Druid instead of a Necromancer. It even makes sense to be a Yew Wand, since yew is associated with Druidic magic.

Specific spells that fit with “maelstrom” are Hurricane, Tornado, Twister, Cyclone Armor, and Frozen Orb. Necromancer effects that would be suitable are Terror and Confuse. Lesser Resist would synergize with the cold effects, and Amp Damage with wind (since it’s physical damage). Twister could support a summoner with stun.

I’m going to go ahead and propose a wand that fits the flavor, despite this meaning the use of O-Skills.

Maelstrom Version 1

1: Remove + Iron Maiden and + Corpse Explosion
2: Add +3 Confuse (Necromancer Only), increase level requirement to 18.
3: Add +3 to Cyclone Armor
4: Add +5 to Twister
5: Add 40% Cold Resistance

The idea behind this wand would be to support a Summoner Necromancer. You use Amp Damage as your main curse, and then spam Twister into the enemy to do damage and support your summons with the stun effect. Terror and Confuse are available as alternative crowd control. It’s just a little… bleh for a wand named Maelstrom for which I’d expect something more like Hurricane.

Maelstrom version 2

1: Remove + Iron Maiden and + Corpse Explosion
2: Remove Necromancer Only from Terror and Amplify Damage (make them O-skills)
3: Add +3 Confuse
4: Add +8 Twister
5: Add +6 Hurricane, increase level requirement to level 36.
6: Add +6 Frozen Orb
7: Add +10% Cold Skill Damage
8: Add 40% Cold Resistance

This version is a lot more powerful, and instead of being aimed exclusively at a Necromancer, this would also be useful to a Cold Sorceress (though still weaker than end game gear) and a Wind Druid. With the cold damage it’s not as suitable for a skeleton focused summoner, but maybe a Fire Golem Necromancer? (Assuming they make the Fire Golem viable). A Wind Druid would get the most use out of it though, even with the O-skills being reduced to +3 for him. Because Amp Damage would be wonderful for him to have. Amp Damage might also make melee characters have this on weapon switch. It certainly would need a lot of testing, the devs would need to try this out at the very start of PTR and see just how much it really is used and if it really does break things, and if so, can it be tweaked to work or needs to be discarded as an option? It’s just so much better flavor that I feel I have to suggest it despite the power concerns.

Either version has one big problem though. I’m pretty sure Maelstrom is a Classic Diablo item, which means there is no access to Druid Skills right? The first and easiest option is to remove Maelstrom from Classic Diablo. A second possibility would be to switch bases with the Carin Wand, but that damages the flavor of the Yew Wand being Druid oriented. The third possible solution would be to simply have a different version of the Maelstrom for Classic Diablo. If using the version 2 wand, I guess that would just mean the Druid skills not being available, and Frozen Orb being the whirling maelstorm. However, I suspect the first solution is probably the simplest.

Gravenspine:

Again, it suffers from the lack of staff mods, it doesn’t even have any Faster Cast either, putting it firmly behind other options. Mana steal is also pointless on a wand.

1: Add +3 to Bone Spear
2: Add +3 to Blood Golem
3: Add +3 to Golem Mastery
4: Replace 5% Mana Steal with +5 Mana After Each Kill
5: Replace Add 4-8 Cold Damage with 30% Faster Cast

This makes it a decent mid level wand for a Bone Spear Necromancer until you reach level 41 and can use a White Wand. Plays with Blood Golem as an alternative golem. Maybe if they fix Blood Golem to be useful (probably by making it synergize with Bone skills instead of Golem skills) it might be useful longer for a Bone Spear variant. Made the Necromancer skills O-skills to give it a little more flexibility in who would want to use it. Since Bone Spear won’t become very powerful without synergies for a non-Necromancer the isn’t really a power concern, however, it could be useful in early nightmare as a weapon switch for a Sorceress to deal with Immune monsters.

Ume’s Lament:

Obviously a refence to the banshee wail, this wand is flavorful and decent. Maybe just a few changes to make it a little more viable. Considering the level (28) it probably ought to have some resistances to make it more attractive for nightmare.

1: Add +5 Attract (Necromancer Only)
2: Add +3 Iron Maiden (Necromancer Only)
3: Remove (Necromancer Only) from Terror (make it an O-skill)
4: All Resistances +10

This makes a curse focused wand, with the Attract/Iron Maiden combo. Making Terror an O-skill fits the flavor of a banshee wand and might find some niche use for other casters who want some crowd control. Maybe something like a Hydra Sorceress might find it useful to be able to cast Terror?

Carin Shard:

Is this a typo? Was this supposed to be a Cairn Shard? Obviously meant to be a summoner wand, but what differentiates it from Arm of King Leoric? I guess we can make it Revive and Golem focused instead of Skeleton focused? Perhaps also give it a defensive focus? Cairn means a pile of stones to identify a location (usually a grave).

6: Add +3 to Iron Skin

Grim Ward suits a “Cairn” wand and can help support a summoner. Iron Skin is defensive, and suits both a stone cairn and the petrified wand. Still not going to be a popular wand, but maybe a few people will use it. According to the skill description, Summon Resist ought to apply to all summons, including Druid summons? Maybe a Druid Summoner might find a use for it?

Arm of King Leoric:

Summoner wand for a skeleton army. Needs the chance to cast to be increased (like most chance to cast items). More importantly the Bone Prison needs to be changed to the monster skill version instead of the player version which can trap the player and get him killed.

1: Increase Chance to Cast Bone Spirit to 15%
2: Increase Chance to Cast Bone Prison to 25%
3: Change Bone Prison to a version that won’t get the player killed.

Blackhand Key:

The original source of the term “Black Hand” is Italian mafia, who would extort money from wealthy people. However, I’d guess that it’s actually a reference to the Black Hand villain from the Green Lantern series, and the first Black Lantern, who would kill and consume corpses to power their ring. Flavor wise this wand seems more suited to Assassin Shadow skills, Necromancer curses, and things like Find Item, since the name suggests a thief or black magic. It has Grim Ward, so I suppose it should be suited for crowd control and supporting a summoner build?

Blackhand Key version 1

1: Add +12 to Dim Vision (Necromancer Only)
2: Add +6 to Iron Maiden (Necromancer Only)
3: Add +8 to Attract (Necromancer Only)
4: Add Level 8 Find Item charges (30/30)

This version is trying to make it as Necromancer focused as possible. Honestly however, I don’t know that many people will use it. The only thing that makes it really attractive is the Find Item charges.

1: Add +3 to Bone Prison
2: Add +1 All Skills
3: Add +20 Psychic Hammer
4: Add +6 Cloak of Shadows
5: Add Level 8 Fade charges (15/15)
6: Add +6 Solar Creeper
7: Add +4 to Slow Missiles
8: Add +3 to Shadow Disciplines (Assassin Only)

This version I tried to make more like a Black Lantern type thing, so it has a lot of O-skills. Psychic Hammer isn’t really that amazing, at level 21 (which is what is granted) that’s only 40 physical and 40 magical damage. Even if the skill damage was increased 1000% it still wouldn’t be overpowered, it’s honestly there more for flavor. I wanted a “consume corpses to regenerate mana” skill, and that meant either Solar Creeper or Redemption, and I thought Redemption didn’t fit the theme. Fade, Bone Prison, Cloak of Shadows, and Slow Missiles all felt like the kind of spells that fit the Black Lantern theme. I made Fade charges so as to limit the strength of that ability.

I could see this being used by caster who wants to control the battlefield more. A summoner Necromancer might find some use in it because of the Cloak of Shadow, and then spam Psychic Hammer while your army fights the enemy. It also works with Amp Damage, in case you want to use that instead. A summoner Druid might find this useful to provide battlefield control. In fact, I considered that Raven might be an in-theme spell to use instead of Psychic Hammer. Maybe a Sorceress might use the Bone Prison to control Immunes while killing minions. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t think it’s overpowered. Still should probably be tested in a PTR environment to make sure.

Boneshade:

This is supposed to be the best Bone Necromancer wand, but it’s completely eclipsed by the White runeword.

1: Add +3 to Bone and Poison Skills (Necromancer Only).
2: Add +8 Mana After Each Kill
3: Add +8 Life After Each Kill

That gives it a max of +8 to Bone Spear, and +7 to Bone Spirit, compared to White which can get +8 to Bone Spear, and +6 to Bone Spirit. The mana regeneration and extra 5% Faster Cast means that with these changes a perfect Boneshade become ever so slightly better than a White wand.

Death’s Web:

Doesn’t really need anything. I suppose we could add a couple staff mods.

2: Add +3 to Life Tap (Necromancer Only)

That’s exactly right, that was just an oversight on my part. Thanks for the great feedback. I would be happy if Bliizard did one-tenth of what is in OP.

On a separate topic, I’m curious about your thoughts on below…

Ethereal Set Weapons
The developers should allow Set Weapons the ability to roll Ethereal with the exception of bows and crossbows as they have no durability. Having Ethereal Set Weapons would open up more options, plus who doesn’t want an Eth BK? The reason Set Armor was excluded, while nice, doesn’t make a difference. This works nicely with the new socketing recipe for set items mentioned previously. If you want prolonged use out of your Eth BK, it requires a Zod rune.

All great feedback, without this thread the devs wouldn’t know what to do with items. Sets were easy compared to this.
