Unofficial Playable Vrykul Discussion Thread

Welcome to the Unofficial Playable Vrykul Discussion Thread

The goal of this thread is for the discussion about the Vrykul as playable race but also about the Vrykul in general: lore, cities, mounts, heritage, class choices, customization, etc

Allied Race or Core race? It doesn’t matter. I only want to see them added to the game as playable race.

Feel free to share your opinion here or what you think about this or just to say a little “hello”: everyone is welcomed here.

Please keep in mind this thread is a work in progress. I will try to update this post when I can with new information, artworks or other things.

This thread is in several sections.

Who are the Vrykul?

The Vrykul are a race of fearsome half-giant warriors that live mostly in Northrend and in the Broken Isles. They are known for their close affinity with the sea and with the proto-dragons from Northrend and the Thorignir from Broken Isles. They are descended from titan-forged iron Vrykul that were afflicted with the Curse of Flesh and are in turn the progenitors of the human race, who were originally Vrykul children that were born weak and deformed as a result of the curse.

Under King Ymiron’s reign, 15,000 years ago, on the heels of the Dragonflayer’s victory over the jalgar, the curse of flesh took another turn Vrykul’s children started to be born smaller, which was considered “weak and ugly” by Vrykul standards. These infants were dubbed “aberrations” and “runts”, and Vrykul society was deeply divided on how to deal with them. Some Vrykul were disgusted by these “aberrations” and beseeched their ruler, Ymiron, to have them all killed, citing a need to keep the Vrykul race pure; others pleaded with him to show them mercy, protesting that despite their weakness, these infants were still their children.

Ymiron then took the side of those calling for the death of their malformed infants, and decreed that all parents with so-afflicted children must kill their young.

However, not all Vrykul could bear to kill their own flesh and blood. Despite their king’s harsh decree, they sheltered their children and took them away to a land far away from Northrend, the modern Tirisfal Glades.

They had heard stories of the Vrykul clan that had followed Tyr and had settled in that area and decided it was a safe haven for their children. There they nursed and raised their children in secret, and taught them the stories and values of ancient Vrykul society as well as the ways of foraging, masonry, smithing, and warfare. Finally, with heavy hearts, they left them in the care of the Vrykul that inhabited Tirisfal, before returning to Northrend.

Before the Great Sundering, the Vrykul of Northrend were led by King Ymiron from Utgarde Keep, and in an effort to stave off the curse of flesh, he ordered his people to put themselves into hibernation for the thousands of years that would follow. However, this was not the case for other Vrykul around the world, as thousands of years ago, another group of Vrykul migrated to the sacred region of Stormheim in search of their true gods. Being a seafaring race, some also took to the seas, with one such group settling on Kul Tiras, inhabiting the region of Drustvar as the Drust.

When the Lich King began the war in the frozen wastes, the Vrykul of Northrend awoke and saw him as a God of Death to serve. Led once again by King Ymiron, the Vrykul pledged themselves to his cause and many were absorbed into the Scourge armies. Following the victory of the living, the Vrykul kept to themselves with no death god to serve, returning to their former way of life.

Vrykul Clans

The Vrykul affected by the Curse of Flesh formed many clans.

Tideskorn clan: The Tideskorn clan are the united Vrykul tribes of Stormheim, led by a God-King. They include the Drekirjar, the Bonespeakers and the Valkyra.

Both the leaders of the Drekirjar and the Bonespeakers thus have a claim to rule the Tideskorn. If female, the ruler is expected or assumed to be a member of the Valkyra.

Drekirjar clan: The Drekirjar are a group of dragon-taming Vrykul located in southeastern Stormheim, in the city of Hrydshal.

Long ago, the Drekirjar entered into a new era when Hakkap One-leg first learned to tame the nearby Thorignir storm drakes. The relationship between the two races was mutually consenting, and they would form a pact with each other that lasted many years. The result was the formation of the Drekirjar Galeborn, the fiercest airborne combatants on the Broken Isles.

Bonespeakers clan: The Bonespeakers (also known as the mystic Vrykul or the mystics) are a group of Vrykul mystics that are supposed to care for the bodies of the Vrykul honored dead. They are religious zealots and masters of rune magics. Many of them have a “Shattered Rune” ability.

Long ago, the Dreki

Valkyra clan: The Valkyra are a sister organization to the Valarjar made up of shieldmaidens from the Tideskorn clan that aspire to be val’kyr, supporting priestesses, and the val’kyr themselves.

Ashildir, Queen of the Valkyra, is long dead but still leads them to this day. They protect the Vault of Eyir.

Valarjar “clan”: The Valarjar are an army of ascended Vrykul who serve Keeper Odyn in the Halls of Valor. Chosen by Odyn, the strongest Vrykul have their spirits lifted to the Halls by the Val’kyr where they fight eternal, shiny and gold.

The Valarjar can be given either mighty, golden Stormforged bodies, or become Val’kyr themselves with power over life and death.

This army was originally created as an equivalent to the Dragon Aspects, who Odyn judged unworthy for the task of protecting Azeroth, until the Val’kyr Helya cursed the Keeper and his army to be trapped within the Halls for ages.

Jandvik “clan”: Jandvik is a Vrykul town found in eastern Suramar.

Dragonflayer clan: The Dragonflayer clan is a Vrykul clan under the control of the slumbering King Ymiron. They have taken up residence in Utgarde Keep, on the shores of Lake Cauldros, within the Howling Fjord of Northrend.

Thousands of years ago before the Sundering, King Ymiron was the leader of the Dragonflayer clan when they were still titan-forged iron. Under his leadership the clan finally gained the upper hand against its foes and in a coordinated offensive, the Vrykul attacked and drove the jalgar into Kalimdor’s lush central forests.

When Vrykul women began giving birth to small, malformed children - a development that spread fear and superstition among the Vrykul clans, Ymiron blamed the absent Keepers for it. He ordered the weak and ugly children born to Dragonflayer women be killed, but some Vrykul could not bear to do it and secreted them away to Tirisfal Glades, where legends told that other Vrykul had fled there with Tyr long ago. In an effort to stave off the curse of flesh, the Dragonflayers went to sleep beneath northern Kalimdor in facilities such as Gjalerbron.

Winterskorn clan: The Winterskorn clan (or tribe) is a clan of Vrykul that live in Skorn and Baleheim in Howling Fjord of Northrend. They are led by Bjorn Halgurdsson.

Thousands of years ago, armed by the fire giants Volkhan and Ignis, the Winterskorn attacked other titan-forged across the Storm Peaks, thus beginning the Winterskorn War. They caught the attention of Tyr when they attacked the earthen. Tyr asked the Dragon Aspects for aid, and the war ended with Ysera and Nozdormu putting the Winterskorn into a timeless sleep beneath northern Kalimdor.

Mjordin clan: The Mjordin are a group of Vrykul from Jotunheim. Little is known about them, but they are mentioned in a way that makes them seem a major force. Indeed, had King Ymiron blown the horns and called for all of the leaders of the ymirjar and mjordin alike, the Vrykul would’ve become a force more powerful than any other within the Scourge. This action would’ve organized the Vrykul nation.

The exact relation between the Mjordin and the Jotunheim Vrykul is unclear. They share the cliff city of Jotunheim and the Balargarde Fortress but there was no evidence to link them directly. The Mjordin were put into stasis in the Halls of the Ancestors.

Jotunheim clan: Jotunheim is the largest Vrykul village in Northrend, located on the northwestern cliffs of Icecrown. It is the place where the Vrykul were first reawakened from their magical sleep and is the second-most important place to them, the first being Ymirheim.

Hyldnir clan: The Hyldnir is the main tribe of frost Vrykul in Storm Peaks, living primarily in Brunnhildar Village, hence why they are also known as the Brunnhildar.

They are the servants of Thorim, a keeper of Ulduar. In these times, the Hyldnir were the allies of the frost giants. That ended when Thorim’s wife, Sif, was slain by Loken, Thorim’s brother. A war between the Hyldnir and the Sons of Hodir started after Thorim brutally attacked the ice giants that were framed for the death of Sif. Thorim exiled himself to Temple of Storms in grief.

Most, if not all, female members of the are warriors and train to compete in the Hyldsmeet, a competition in which warriors fight to determine who shall rule by Thorim’s side. They are constantly warring with the Sons of Hodir in the name of the Thorim.

They have a strict matriarchal society with the males, both Hyldnir and other races, as they think men are good for naught but slave labor, mostly in the nearby Forlorn Mine. Even females not of their faction are regarded with more respect than any man.

Valkyrion “clan”: Valkyrion is a frost Vrykul settlement located in the western area of the Storm Peaks.

Their Hyldnir sisters of Brunnhildar Village hate them for becoming the Lich King’s servants. The Blighted Pool can also be found here.

Ymirjar “clan”: The Ymirjar were the elite warrior caste created by King Ymiron in service of the Lich King, the victorious Vrykul in the battle of ascension at Jotunheim. They inhabit the city of Ymirheim in the center of Icecrown, which is of most significance to Vrykul culture.

Ymirheim is populated by both male and female frost Vrykul. This population, called the Ymirjar, are undead and allied with the Lich King. These were Vrykul who traveled to Jotunheim and fought at Valhalas. The winners of this competition are taken to Ymirheim and become Ymirjar. The losers become vargul.

Kvaldir clan: The kvaldir, also known as sea Vrykul, are the spirits of fearsome Vrykul warriors or seafaring raiders who roam the seas raiding ships and coastal settlements. Working for Helya, the kvaldir raid the coasts and pull souls to Helheim, thus robbing Odyn of potential champions.

The spirits of those dishonorable warriors spend eternity in Helheim locked in an endless futile battle, always seeking glory but never able to attain it.

They attack the beaches of southern Northrend and sections of Stormheim. Additionally in a chain of flashbacks, Varkul the Unrelenting leads a huge army and claims the then abandoned Ruins of Vashj’ir.

Drust “clan”: The Drust were a population of Vrykul who inhabited the island of Kul Tiras before the first humans arrived there.

They wielded powerful death magic and mainly lived in Drustvar, but also resided in several areas of Tiragarde Sound and to lesser extent Stormsong Valley; to this day, their ruins and ancient roads can be seen throughout the island.

When human sailors from Gilneas arrived in Kul Tiras around 2,700 years ago, the Drust king Gorak Tul led his people into war against the human settlers. However, not all Drust agreed with the war, and the druidic Thornspeakers left Drust society to side with the humans.

Gorak Tul eventually lost the conflict, and his Drust were almost all slain by the human invaders. However, Gorak Tul called upon the dark powers of Thros, the Blighted Lands, where the Drust’s spirits found refuge. Since then, they have slowly been trying to make their way back to the mortal world.

Which Faction?

Imgur
(Alliance)

Wishing to retake their old capital (Tideskorn Harbor), the Tideskorn Vrykul look for new allies to do this. Knowing what Sylvannas and Horde did to Eyir, they will never forgive them for what they did to her. So God-Queen Sigryn’s choice will be in favor of the Alliance.

  • The Tideskorn Vrykul and the Alliance will purge the Tideskorn Harbor from all opponents and they will purify this land to retake it.

  • The Drekirjar and the Valkyra want to prove their strengh to Odyn and what better opportunity to show him this with great battles. These Vrykul will accompany the Alliance in their travels to fight new and powerful opponents to prove their strengh to Odyn.

Big humans, I am yawn.

They could be Paladins too. In legion we saw vrykuls using light, their source of light is Eyir, the vallkyr godness who Sylvanas tried to catch.

I mean, if folk want Vrykul then best of luck to you all…

But seriously? More Humans-but-slightly-different? The Alliance already has a massive homogeny problem.

I’m glad you mentioned this, because this was basically going to be my comment. Would have made more sense if it had happened back at the end of Legion or something, while Sylvanas was still in the picture. But I sure as heck wouldn’t object.

How would a giant sized human fit into anything?

Elastic. Just like how big humans in real life fit into stuff.

Don’t mix IRL with this fantasy game.

Always happy to see a new playable race thread!

Even better to see one thats a fairly popular ask that hasn’t had its own thread for awhile.

Vrykrul would make a good race I think for Horde or Alliance.

Surprisely there hasn’t even been a Huge Vrykul Discord or Community since the WoW Community wants Vrykul to be playable.

While there has always appeared to be a large amount of people who want Vrykul I’ve noticed a huge disparity between each one on why and how and what for Vrykul.

Like even the discussions I’ve seen about which side can get heated oddly fast for em. I think they just have cohesion issues overall.

The first question I have is “Why?” I mean, I’d rather see playable Murlocs from a different timeline (documented) than Vrykul who actually want to coexist with humans (less demonstrated).

Tall humans. Oh boy.

I think we have a better chance at playable Ogres - if we ever see a male one, that is. (My head canon is that all Ogres we see are female - we have yet to see what a male one looks like.)

Update my thread with another racial mount, a Vrykul tabard for Tideskorn Vrykul, a paladin mount for paladin Vrykul, a shaman totem for Vrykul shaman and a moonkin form for Vrykul druid.

Only if they promise to stop saying “I SPIT ON YOU!!!” when clicked on.

There is precedents for Alliance friendly Vykrul. The human race only exists at all because elements of the Vykrul resisted the king’s orders to purge their small, malformed human offspring.

A contemporary band of vykrul that see humanity as kin isn’t a stretch.

I would play a Vrykul on a heartbeat, them and the High elves are what i always wanted in the alliance.

Vrykyl for Horde, they are smelly, in proper, ill-mannered, love to fight and drink alot. Perfect fit for our faction. (plus Alliance has enough humanoids they don’t need anymore races that use horses as mounts.)

Vykrul >> Kul Tiran

Not sure who in their right mind picked KT? Doofy dad bod shaped humans. smh

I’d reroll to Vrykul in a heartbeat. Even if they were Alliance. I’ve wanted to be a giant Viking warrior since I first encountered them in Wrath.

Some of my ideas:

Race Choice: Allied. Don’t really see how/why this could be a core race. I would say this could be a neutral-sided race; players can choose to go Horde or Alliance, which would give Horde an option to do a pseudo-human. This would be tricky to swing as an allied race, though.

Races: Warrior, warlock, priest, paladin, shaman, druid, hunter, death knight.

Rationale for class non-choices:

Rogue: I don’t really see the Vrykul liking stealth and underhanded combat methods. I think Blizzard would add these anyway since every class can do rogues now.

Mage: Being users of mostly primal and “old” magic, as well as light, I can’t really see them being mages. See above point about Blizzard adding them anyway though.

Monk: I went back and forth on this; I don’t know. I just don’t imagine a pandaren walking into Stormheim and teaching them monkery.

Starting zone: Stormheim

Racials:

To Glory! Passive - When a killing blow is landed, or spell is cast that heals the target for 50% of total health, movement speed and haste is increased by 5% for 10 seconds. Cannot occur more than once every 15 seconds.

Legendary Valor Passive- Primary stat increased by 1%, increasing to 10% when the Vrykul falls below 25% total health. Instantly returns to 1% if healed above 25%.
Runed Weaponsmith Passive- Enchanting and Blacksmithing increased by 2%.

Northerner Passive- 10% resistance to environmental/area of effect frost damage, and all frost magic spells cast on the Vrykul has a 5% chance to be resisted.

Grit your Teeth Active/Cast- When activated, all damage taken is reduced by 50% and healing received is increased by 20% for 5 seconds. 1m 25s cooldown.

Valkyr’s Chosen Active/Cast - When cast, the Vrykul, upon death, will automatically return to life with full health once in PvE, and 50% health in PvP, with primary stat increasing by an additional 10% for 15 seconds. If the Vrykul has an active soulstone or a pending battle-resurrection, these effects are replaced but the remaining cooldown on the original caster’s resurrection spell is reset. 30 minute cooldown.

Racial Mount: Storm Wolf (the type of spirit wolf that has lightning radiating from it), or mammoth.

Shaman Totems: An iron Valkyr bust with a sword and axe forming an x-cross on the back, and a censer above the Valkyr’s head that emits element-based colored smoke.

Nah. They should be Horde 100%. They don’t fit the Alliance in any way other than they look human. The Horde would be perfect for them, by lore and by their nature.

Plus, I’m pretty sure no Alliance players wants more big human races when they already have the Kul’ Tirans.

The Alliance should get the Saberon instead. They need a beast tribe that’s not tied to humans like Worgens.
