Classic / Pre-Reforged Voices Fix (fixed v1.32.7 problem)

The old voices were replaced by new ones in different languages and many people aren’t happy about it. This tutorial can hopefully help to fix it.

Fix for v1.32.7 (and upcoming patches?):

For Windows:

Download this and run it to fix the problem: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AjKrdUvE60XngWbIuWQcDhYewXml?e=M04nlZ
It adds the registry entry “Allow Local Files” and sets its value to 1.

You can also add it manually of course, just open “regedit.exe”, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Blizzard Entertainment\Warcraft III, create a “DWORD-value (32-bit)”, call it “Allow Local Files” and set its value to 1.

//If the key “Warcraft III” doesn’t exist, then just create it

Tutorial:

  1. Download MPQ Editor: http://www.zezula.net/en/mpq/download.html
    and CascView: http://www.zezula.net/en/casc/main.html

  1. Download a classic version of the game in your language that still has MPQ files (before v1.30)
// Classic Warcraft III --- Official Installers - Official Patches

  1. Use MPQ Editor to extract the folders “Sound” and “Units” from the MPQs in this order:
    (1) “war3.mpq”,
    (2) “War3x.mpq”,
    (3) “War3xlocal.mpq”,
    (4) “war3patch.mpq”
    and replace all files

//Listfile for “war3patch.mpq”: https://sfx.thelazy.net/games/preset/10761/

  1. Delete in the extracted “Units” folder all files, but leave the folders (& their content) untouched

  1. Open CascView, click on “Game Storage”, go to war3.w3mod\ _locales\ [your language].w3mod and extract the folder “movies

  1. Move the extracted folders “Sound”, “Units” and “movies” to the folder “_retail_” (in your game directory) → ?:\Warcraft III\ _retail_

//If the folder_retail_doesn’t exist, just move the extracted folders to the folderWarcraft III

Attention!:

DELETE ALL.mdx” and “.blp” (& “.text” / “.txt”) files inside the subfolders of the extracted “Units” folder to make it work with the Reforged mode!

//How to do it quickly:
(1) open theUnitsfolder, write in the searchbar “.mdx” or “.blp”,
(2) wait for the search to show all results (and refresh the page with F5 maybe),
(3) select the first “.mdx” or “.blp” file, hold the shift key (to select all at once), go to the last file in the searchlist, select it
(4) and delete them all.

Additional steps for movie audio and movie captions:

For movie audio:

(1) Check the file names inside your “audio” folder of your extracted “movies” folder, but ignore & delete “tutorialin.flac”.

(2) Convert the same files (with VLC for example) inside the “Movies” folder of your classic game folder (with the exception of “TutorialIn.mpq” & “UndeadEd.mpq”) to mp3 files (or just download the mp3s from YouTube clips & rename them)

(3) and move them then to the “audio” folder of your “movies” folder you extracted earlier.

(4) Delete all “.flac” files and keep your new mp3 files.

For movie captions:

(1) Use MPQ Editor to open “war3.mpq”, go to war3.mpq\UI and extract the folder “Captions

(2) Use MPQ Editor to open “War3xlocal.mpq”, go to war3.mpq\UI and extract the folder “Captions

(3) Go inside your previously extracted “movies” folder and open the folder “captions”.

(4) Use your newly extracted “Captions” folder as an aid to edit the captions inside the previously extracted “captions” folder to your liking.

This tutorial worked for me and the game seems to use the old voices now.

Language Packs:

Check “Fix for v1.32.7 (and upcoming patches?)” above

Move the folders “Sound”, “Units” and “movies” to the folder “_retail_” (in your game directory). → ?:\Warcraft III\ _retail_

//If the folder_retail_doesn’t exist, just move the folders to the folderWarcraft III

Hey Saido, do not copy/paste stuff without a proper explanation… I have to go to Reddit to figure out what is this about.

This is one user explaining what is this for:
“If you’re fond of the voices pre-reforged, this makes you able to use the old voices instead of the new ones (only the english version doesn’t have much difference, but all other language have been changed with the coming of reforged).”

Thanks for the advice, just added the explanation.

Sorry Saido, I’m grateful to you for posting this tutorial but I don’t understand anything.
Ok I have casc viewer and the files extracted from the original mpq, then what should I do with it? In chronological order and with detailed explanations please, this is the first time that I make this kind of modification and as a french, I waited for this one for months. :anguished:

I uploaded a French version below.

WCIII Original French: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AjKrdUvE60XngWRq3uMSuiolWvC3?e=TCTwc8

Move the folders “Sound”, “Units” and “movies” to the folder “_retail_” (in your game directory). → ?:\Warcraft III\ _retail_

//If the folder_retail_doesn’t exist, just move the folders to the folderWarcraft III

Oh ok there was nothing to do! Thank you!

Too bad since Reforged, orcs and humans units have duplicate sound files which ruins the flow of the “pissed” quotes which are in several parts. I had already reported the problem when the game was released, but obviously, nobody cares except me.
Is it the same in english or is it just the VF which was botched? :disappointed_relieved:

I read that people also complained about the new German, Spanish and Russian voices. The English ones apparently didn’t change much, but I read that they removed some voice lines and also replaced some voices with new ones. It also seems like some sound files are high-pitched now (e.g. high elf archer “pissed”, if they didn’t fix it yet).

@Saido Since last useless sh!##y patch this method doesn’t work anymore :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Maybe check if there is a newly created folder called _retail_ . It could be that the patch added it now. If that’s the case, then try to put the mod folders inside of it and see if it works.

I can’t check right now, if it’s still working for me because my internet is dead. #SayNoToDRM

There is still only one and it doesn’t work anymore nor any other folder, I already tried. Thanks modern Blizzard.

I will look into it later once I have Internet again and see, if I can find a way to fix it. :+1:

Edit: By the way, I’m using my phones data to comment here right now, just in case you wondered.:rofl::rofl:

Edit2:

For Windows:

Download this and run it to fix the problem: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AjKrdUvE60XngWbIuWQcDhYewXml?e=M04nlZ

Hi! thanks for taking the time of making this guide and uploading the files.

But i got a couple of question, and i was hoping you could me a hand. First, why, after extracting all the sound files for the units, we delete them from the folders, leaving only the directory estructure?
related to that, after doin everything, i get the voices for the cinematics, but units ingame still got the new voices. any way to fix that?

No, you don’t delete the folders (including the content of the folders). You only delete the files inside the Units folder which aren’t inside any other folders. Means, you leave all folders inside the Units folder untouched (& don’t touch the files inside of those folders either).

I never cared voices to be honest. just don’t play this game if you don’t like it. warcraft 3 is dead anyway.

I originaly made a post about this issue months ago to Blizzard. But obviously nobody is reading this forum anymore as no devs are working on Warcraft 3 anymore. Im very grateful for your tutorial since we’re never getting back a decent game we might aswell take care of it ourselves.
Fu** activision blizz and thank you Saido
