Forking Game Development

I’m thinking that if Classic does as well as we all know it will that Blizzard should release new expansions sticking with the fundamentals of Classic WoW while also releasing their casual constantly changing Retail content. Basically there would be two streams of the same game catering to the 2 main divisions of the audience.
Thoughts?

They’ve said they don’t want to manage two MMO’s.

Oh hey, another “I know what to do at the ‘end of classic’ guys” post.

They’ve already said multiple times that they will not simultaneously develop two WoWs.

Survival of the fittest at that point. Hopefully the reaction is good enough for them to cease development of the Retail model and convert back to the Classic model.

Until Classic has a proven track record, “survival of the fittest” is “Classic dies”. One of these two games ran for 2 years, and the other 15.

Classic only ever gained subs. Retail has been (meme) slowly becoming less popular over the years. Yes of course there are multiple reasons for that including natural aging of the product, but still the design decisions aren’t ones that keep people sticking around as shown by all of the streamers becoming disinterested.

Retail gained subs for at least 7 straight years, and still has (colloquially) more subs than Vanilla did at its end.

The point is not to compete. Its that Classic hasn’t even been released, so planning for its guaranteed success and replacement of Retail is silly. If you want the Vanilla philosophy to win out, it has to prove itself first.

Also, learn to use Search instead of making yet another carbon copy thread.

I will say I didn’t look nor do I care to look for another thread, but you sound like the person that would scream necro if I replied to another post. There is no way that WoW has as many US actually active subs now as it did at the end of Classic.

You mean the posts literally being posted on right now, and at the top of the list?

No, not really. You sound like the type of person who things being the OP is somehow a privilege. Please use the search function and deign to reply on someone else’s thread.

Prove it? Blizzard seems to think the product is still doing alright. I suspect people’s outlook is tinged by desire rather than reality.

An MMO can survive from the revenue generated from sub 100k players so of course they aren’t going to pull the plug.

Blizzard isn’t “an MMO” company. They are “the MMO” company. But again, Classic hasn’t even shown if it’ll get 100k people. We all want it to, but these “Blizzard should run two games” posts, when Blizzard doesn’t want to run two games, are ignoring the reality that we’ve proven nothing to Blizzard yet.

If the thread I just checked is the one you mentioned it is talking about streaming into a BC server. That is not at all what I am talking about. I’m talking about completely new content created, but in the spirit of Classic. No more expansions that change the core mechanics of how the game is played.

There are at least 3 different posts in the top 10.

This is just the ones with posts in the last hour.

None of those are mentioning the same point that I am making. They are either talking about streaming in to previously released content aka progressive servers or altering the current game to be more like Classic. I am saying make unique expansions for Classic that follow the design philosophy of Classic.

Going back 6 hours.

That’s called Classic+. Use the search function for it.

I think you need a break from the forums if you really believe someone is going to come on here and automatically know that an idea could be searched for by inputting Classic+.

You literally said you don’t care enough to use search. Reading the “Top” list would have found you plenty of examples.

Within the last 6 hours 9 different threads have been bouncing around on the exact same topic: How to handle the “wildly successful end” of a game that hasn’t even been released.
