If (when) Classic is hugely successful, do you think modern WoW developers will finally take note and try and to more closely review the things about Classic that make it so popular?
I mean, modern WoW has changed so much… sometimes it seems just for the sake of change… and other times it seems one or more devs are trying to bring “the next great thing” to WoW.
What if the next big thing, is bringing back some or all the great things about early WoW?
they can’t do to much to retail without retail fans collectively losing their marbles.
if you want a good example just look at how much they cried about
updated leveling in 7.3.5 (yes it made it slightly longer, but it made it so you could actually quest out a zone without wasting time. furthermore it made actual questing an actual viable option again. they still complain about leveling to this day despite it taking less then 18 hours.
the complaints around the pathfinder system and flying in general.
the complaints about the removal of a few portals increasing travel time around the world SLIGHTLY.
you literally cannot remove even the slightest bit of convenience from retail without backlash
Blizzard can never undo the damage of retail. They would lose all their current players with only a hope that old ones would return. No way Activi$ion would allow that kind of business decision.
Would they really though? I mean the current players will accept almost ANYTHING with a smile… yeah they holler and moan… but keep them subs coming because they are the truly addicted.
I’d say that trying no flight in WoD cost them a fair bit.
When they finally went to add it, given the amount of work they said they had to do it was pretty clear they intended to never have it and pulled a 180 because of the response from the players.
Basically, this. I completely agree with OP that retail WoW would benefit from more closely resembling Vanilla. I think that current retail would be a much better game if it’s MMORPG still had RP.
However, I strongly believe that a reversion to Vanilla principles is severely unlikely.
I don’t know if it has to be “like Vanilla”… just bring back the successful aspects… like rewards vs. efforts, deterministic loot, do away with LR and all the varied difficulties of raids/dungeons, return to a clear and concise gear progression path.
I think the majority of players on modern WoW would enjoy a game where they feel good about getting loot again… where they can actually see/feel the progression of their character, where professions are meaningful.
Sure there would be some stop playing… but if it replaced them with an even higher number of players who prefer an enjoyable game over a meh past time… it might be worthwhile.
With Classic WoW, we should pretty much be considered a lost cause as far as coming back to retail is concerned.
Though they could slowly shift things back to try to get more players.
People cry about stuff like portals, but how many of them actually quit over it? That’s the thing. Outside of certain things, people largely seem to raise a big fuss on the forums then just accept it and live with it.
So they didn’t actually say something like “and if Classic does well, maybe we’ll try to adapt some of that.” The level squish is pretty controversial and people don’t like it when they can’t fly or teleport.
