If you want to play TBC or WoTLK Classic…then there is the copy character option.
You copy your character and it moves to the TBC server, but you keep your character originally on Classic, then the same happens when WoTLK comes out; copy it to WoTLK.
That way… years down the road… you can either play your character maxxed on Classic / TBC / WOTLK.

That is a very old concept, like a week after Classic announcement, you know… because patience and stuff…
How about we wait for Classic to launch. Nobody is even 60 yet!

This is a fresh new idea that no one has thought of yet. I’m glad someone finally made a thread about it.

Nah, everyone starts from scratch because, “you need to work for it”.
They’re merely getting primed for the weekend.

Let’s say that 50% of the Classic playerbase will want to transition to TBC. 50% of every guild and every server will copy their characters and play TBC. Now, imagine what that does to a Classic server. Half of your raid team gone, half of your community gone, servers that had healthy populations now underpopulated. In response, some guilds will likely make executive decisions to move to TBC in order to stay together, taking Classic players with them for the sake of the guild.
TBC will gut Classic if we just have character copy. What we should do is have:
Classic servers that stay Classic.
Classic servers that transition to TBC and then Wrath.
Most of the 50% who want Classic only will roll on Classic only servers. Most of the 50% who want to progress through expansions will roll on progressive servers. When TBC launches, Classic-only servers aren’t depopulated.

That’s impossible to do, as there are currently no plans to add expansions. So they can’t flag servers for an expansion they have no intention of making. It creates an empty promise they aren’t willing to make to players.
It’s as impossible as making an executive decision of:
“Are we going to offer expansions? Yes/No”
They don’t even need to commit; just state that they MAY offer expansions, hammering the point that if Classic isn’t successful then expansions may not happen. It will be disappointing if they don’t, but we’ll get over it.
This is a great idea, and keeps us all in classic. At what ever time we feel is best at a given moment.
Plus there could be a fee charged for each time a character is copied and moved to the next expansion up. That should make the greedy shareholders happy.
what if i want a server that transitions to burning crusade but not wrath?
the best idea is just standalone servers.
Due to the huge divide over what people want, Blizzard may shy away from additions of any kind.
Classic forever
Classic+ : Add raids and content without level cap increases or new maps.
TBC
WOTLK
That is a lot of community splitting. At what point does a certain “type of server” begin to lose profitability and become a drain? That’s the problem…
They decided to do Classic based on a huge number of Classic private servers drawing tens of thousands of users to their stolen IP. Add a petition signed by what, like 250,000 people? That’s a lot of potential from sub fees.
I think to see Classic+, TBC, or WOTLK that there would need to be an equal level of profit potential. At this time there is no way to determine that. I suppose if there was at 200,000+ signature petition for TBC, then it would force Blizzards hand in the interest of revenue potential. The question is, can people wanting those expansion servers garner that level of support? It’s hard to say. Out of private servers the most popular have been Vanilla/Classic servers. The TBC/WOTLK/etc ones tend to draw a much smaller player base.
I like the idea of F R E S H TBC, everybody starts from lvl 1.

As much as a character copy would be ideal, i can see that leading to huge duping exploits. Even if they only allow you to copy a character once, because the character stays on the vanilla server you just have to transfer all your gold and items to the next character before you copy the next one. Transfers have their own disadvantages too, but i can see Activision doing this and putting it behind a pay wall for some easy extra $$$. In the end that might not be a bad thing, as it will encourage a lot of players to start from lvl 1 which will keep the world relatively alive and healthy.
Another option is having a lomg cooldown on charcter copies. In the end these problems that aren’t bad to identify now but we have a long time before we will even know that they are committed to making TBC and/or WotLK servers and should properly discuss then then.
That is a brilliant concept! How did you come up with such an original idea? Kudos.
Oh, wait. I did a search and there’s already 437.6 identical threads on this topic.
