Oh Boy.. Get Ready... 8 Hours of Downtime Tuesday

Honestly everyone should be aware of release dates in advance. Then those of us who have been around since vanilla know that the game is pretty much unplayable on the first day. So we wait, patiently for the next day. More content means more maintenance. They are doing great so far.

I work a 24 hour shift… Ya some people have limited time. Sorry, we can’t all have someone else provide for us while we play games all day

Or sales in Amazon’s or other retailers cases. But yes, revenue isn’t directly tied to uptime. If it was downtime would magically disappear.

And without that link the ties to ROI are very fuzzy. It’s just a straw on the back of a camel for why people would leave or a matter of the companies reputation.

All speculation at this point, but I think the major hang up is the databases. And when there’s changes to the structure of player records they have to take them off line and batch process the change in.

One way this could be fixed is on log in copying your data over to the new database with the changes and putting you on shards updated to work with those changes. But that would mean more databases, backups, and shards.

“A patch of this calibre”

A small nothing patch compared to a lot of other games.

Downtime you say? I’ve got a full battery on my DS and Chrono Trigger as well as a half dozen other cool titles to play if that’s the case.

It’s funny because I sold my 3ds and all those games, but kept the normal ds and actually bought a little further into those games. I had chrono trigger already and just really did not want to give it up.

This is Blizzard’s way of checking customer game addiction levels.

Seems to be working.

Hugs Nobully…you tell’em…they do forget don’t they…

If you don’t work this is why you should either play other games too or get a hobby that takes you out of the house. That way you’ll have something to do when there’s long maintenance.

Gonna watch my strawberries grow for 8 hrs. What are you guys gonna do?

I’ve gotten hooked back on NMS and FO4 as well as playing the story through SC1 and 2. I even dusted off my copy of WC3/TFT.

There’s so much else to do. I’ve started my own book list and starting it today.

But how will we know that they deserve compensation?

I started a new Oblivion Character! A High Elf whom I’m gonna try to make only use spells! Gonna see a lot of playing time soon!

That is great! Lol well done!

WoW has a much more complex back end than Facebook or say Macy’s.

I’m sure live updates could happen, but they’d still have to shut down certain things as they were updated. Even if just for a moment.

Facebook likely isn’t fully live updating… you just don’t notice. The webpage has a change, but you won’t notice till you reload or try to post.

I use Macy’s as example because they do live updates during Cyber Monday, but it’s messy. In their view a wonky order is better than no order.
