Companion Pets and Where to Find Them

With WotLK allowing players to free up the bag space that our companion pets take up, I would like to break down where you can get each and every pet that you can currently obtain in TBC and WotLK.

I’ll put them into 9 categories… Quests, Event, Profession, World drop, Vendor, Dungeon/Raid, Achievement, Reputation and Potential Additions. I’ll be describing how to get each one as best I can.

There’s also one for Cataclysm

Quest Pets

Snarly, Chuck, Muckbreath and Toothy

Snarly, Chuck, Muckbreath and Toothy are obtained via the fishing daily in Shattrath from the NPC called Old Man Barlo (39, 13) in Terokkar Forest. The quest isn’t always up as there are 4 other quests the daily could be so just check in every day and see if it’s up.

With the quest sending you to Stormwind, there isn’t a fishing requirement since Stormwinds fishing level is 1. Which means that even if you haven’t leveled your fishing skill at all, you can still complete this daily which is why it’s here in the quest list rather than the profession list.

Sprite Darter Hatchling

While this is a quest pet for the Alliance for the Horde it Drops from killing Sprite Darters around the Grimtotem Compound.

In Cataclysm this now drops off of any mob from Feralas instead of only the Sprite Darters.

You start the chain for this quest in Feralas at the Grimtotem Compound located at ~66,45.

You proceed by finding the NPC called Kindal Moonweaver who tells you to free Darter Hatchlings and make sure at least 6 survive.

Once you’ve done that you’re then tasked with killing the Grimtotem there and after you’ve done that kill quest you’re given an egg.

You’re told to then go to Shimmering Flats, talk to an NPC there who then tells you to go to The Hinterlands. Once there the NPC tells you to kill some wolves for their meat as food for the baby and after that you’ve got yourself a Sprite Darter Egg.

Note: You should have an Elixir of Fortitude In your bags as it is needed in the quest chain.

Mechanical Chicken

Obtaining this pet is actually quite simple, the only thing is that it can be very time consuming.

To get this pet you first have to be in either The Hinterlands, Feralas or Tanaris, the order doesn’t matter as you need to do all 3 regardless.

In order to get this item you first need to kill mobs in those 3 areas until you get an item called…

  • OOX-17/TN Distress Beacon - Tanaris

  • OOX-22/FE Distress Beacon - Feralas

  • OOX-09/HL Distress Beacon - The Hinterlands

Once you’ve obtained this item you can begin the quest, the quest is an escort mission where you’re tasked with ensuring the safety of a mechanical chicken, you do this for each one.

After you’ve done all 3 you go hand in the quests to an NPC in Booty Bay called Oglethorpe Obnoticus who will then give you a follow-up quest where you simply talk to him again and then you have your very own Mechanical Chicken!

Westfall Chicken

The method to obtain this pet is quite obscure, it’s truely a unique quest.

You start by making a macro, a /chicken macro, then make your way to Saldean’s Farm located in Westfall (56,30).

Once you’re at the farm do the following…

  1. Start spamming your macro to a chicken until you see the chicken emote to you (You need to have the chicken targeted).

  2. Interact with the chicken to accept its quest.

  3. Go to Farmer Saldean and purchase Special Chicken Feed.

  4. Hand in the quest to the chicken

  5. Wait a couple seconds and loot the egg.

This quest is Alliance only but you can still get this if you’re Horde, simply get an Alliance friend to do every step and then you can just loot the egg from the ground.

Do be careful not to accidentally kill the chicken as this will make you start over, I’d advise you to have interact bound to a key, you can do this in keybindings.

(I have interact bound to \ and ctrl mouse wheel. It’s helpful in high traffic areas with a lot of horde and you don’t want to attack anyone and if there’s a lot of dead mobs and you want to loot all of them.)

Miniwing

Obtained by doing an escort quest in the Bonewastes in Terokkar Forest, the escort ends with your fighting a level 65 elite mob (can’t remember the exact level)

The quest starts at roughly 52,70. The quest givers name is Skywing,

Worg Pup and Smolderweb Hatchling

Both these pets are obtained from LBRS, the quests are from the Burning Steppes where the Horde Flight Master is (64,23).

Kibler's Exotic Pets (Worg Pup)

Kibler’s Exotic Pets has you go and capture one of the worg pups located where Halycon is. If I remember the worg pups come with the boss rather than them being in the cage where you spawn the boss or it comes with the bosses mate.

En-Ay-Es-Tee-Why (Smolderweb Hatchling)

En-Ay-Es-Tee-Why has you go to where the spiders are and loot the eggs in the area, I believe it’s 10 eggs.

This is a great way to farm Ironweb Spidersilk for Arcane Bombs.

Cataclysm changes how you obtain this pet, it’s no longer from a quest, you get the Spider Hatchling from Mother Smolderweb and the Worg Pup is from Quartermaster Zigris.

Jubling

To get this pet 2 conditions need to have been met.

  1. You have 2 Dark Iron Ale (this can be bought from the Grim Guzzler in BRD)

  2. The Darkmoon Fair is active

Getting this pet is very easy,

  • First locate an NPC in DMF called Morja.

  • Place one of the Dark Iron Ale at her feet.

  • Wait for Jubjub to come back to Morja

  • After Jubjub has returned to Morja’s arms place the other Dark Iron Ale.

If you’ve done this correctly you can now interact with Morja and she gives you an item called A Jubling’s Tiny Home. This is the pet but it has a timer on it, you’ll need to wait a week of real time before you can summon this pet.

Argent Squire

You get this pet after achieving the rank of champion with the Argent Tournament.

Alliance Argent Tournament Pets

Teldrassil Sproutling - Darnassus

Dun Morogh Cub - Ironforge

Elwynn Lamb - Stormwind

Ammen Vale Lashling - Exodar

Mechanopeep - Gnomeregan

These are all bought by their respective Quartermaster in Icecrown, each pet is sold for 40 Champion’s seals

Champion’s Seals are the currency used by the Argent Tournament.

Horde Argent Tournament Pets

Durotar Scorpion - Orgrimmar

Mulgore Hatchling - Thunder Bluff

Enchanted Broom - Silvermoon

Sen’jin Fetish - Darkspear Trolls

Tirisfal Batling - Undercity

These are all bought by their respective Quartermaster in Storm Peaks, each pet is sold for 40 Champion’s Seals

Champion’s Seals are the currency used by the Argent Tournament.

I wasn’t sure if the Argent Tournament pets go in quest or reputation, I can see it being in either but since you do quests to unlock them I guess they can go here.

The crocs might take you a very long time to obtain all 4 of them but if you keep at it you’ll get them eventually.

World Event Pets

Most of the Event pets are self explanatory on how you obtain them.

The Clockwork Rocket Bot and the Scorchling might be unobtainable.

Sinister Squashling

This simply has a chance to drop after you’ve killed the Headless Horsemen during Hallows End

In Cataclysm this pet can now also be purchased with 150 Tricky Treats. Tricky Treats are obtained by killing the Headless Horseman.

Clockwork Rocket Bot - Potentially unobtainable

This is a free pet from the pile of presents you get during Winter Veil, unsure if you can get this anymore.

This might be available with Cataclysms Winter Veil.

Wolpertinger

This pet is currently obtain through a quest during Brewfest that has you capture wild Wolpertingers.

Piglet's Collar, Rat Cage, Turtle Box, Peanut, Willy and Egbert

To get this you do quests with the child after you’ve done the 5 quests you get to choose what your reward is. You can only choose one of these pets during Childrens Week.

(Also has a bag of gold as an option)

You pick up the quests in Stormwind or Orgrimmar for the Pig, Turtle and Rat while Peanut, Willy and Egbert are from Shattrath’s Orphanage (75, 48)

You aren’t limited to one Orphanage and can also do SW+Shatt / Org+Shatt.

Peddlefeet

Obtained from a Gift of Adoration or by spending 40 love tokens during Love Is In The Air.

Love tokens are obtained by doing the dailies availiable during the event, you get ~5 a day. You can get more by handing it necklaces obtained by killing mobs near your level (10 - 1 conversion rate).

Gifts of Adoration are from talking to an NPC and are on a 1 hour CD (indicated by a debuff).

Scorchling

This is dropped from Ahune in Slave pens during the Midsummer Festival.

The item that summons this pet is called a Scorched Stone.

In Cataclysm you can obtain this pet from Zen’Vorka’s cache an item bought from Zen’Vorka for 30 marks of the world tree in The Molten Front.

Captured Flame

This is obtained via a quest that starts from any Flame Keeper in a major city. The quest is called A Light In Dark Places and it tells you to go to 4 dungeons and locate a fire.

If you’ve already done this quest and deleted the pet you can purchse it again for 350 Flame Blossoms.

This is only available during the Midsummer Festival

  • Dire Maul, after Slipkik.

  • Stratholme Live, right before you actually enter Scarlet Hold

  • LBRS, Where you do the Ogre event.

  • Scholomance, In the veiwing room. You gain access to it after defeating Rattlegore and getting the key.

Winter Reindeer, Tiny Snowman, Green/Red Little Helper Box, Father's Little Helper

All 4 of these are obtained from the Gaily Wrapped Present during Winter Veil, you’re only ever gifted one of these and they’re BoE (at least the Little Helpers are) so you can get duplicates but that also means that you can buy them on the AH.

Macabre Marionette - Potentially gets removed after the DotD event.

This pet is obtainable during the day of the dead event, this is how you get it

(courtesy of WoW Head).

  1. Log in during Day of the Dead.

  2. Buy some ice cold milk and simple flour. Milk from the innkeeper (not Dalaran) and simple flour from the cooking supplier.

  3. Port to Dalaran. This will work for all races.

  4. Go to the graveyard just north of the staircase where you’d exit the Violet Citadel in the grassy area, you’ll see some seasonal NPCs.

  5. Buy an Orange Marigold and the Recipe: Bread of the Dead from the seasonal vendor there.

  6. Learn the recipe. Be ready to accept and turn in quest at same time; you have only 30 seconds per flower usage.

  7. Use the cooking fire beside the quest giver to make the bread.

  8. Use the flowers to make the invisible dead visible. Some spirits including a quest giver will appear (Cheerful Dalaran Spirit).

  9. Accept quest: The Grateful Dead. Because you’ve already made the bread it will change directly to a completion.

  10. Turn in quest and receive marionette (appears as skull in inventory) as quest reward.

Dalaran Children's Week

In WotLK there are 2 more pets to obtain from this event, Curious Wolvar Pup or a Curious Oracle Hatchling.

At the end of the quest chain the pet’s mailed to you.

Little Orphan Kekek of the Wolvar will grant you a… Curious Wolvar Pup

Little Orphan Roo of the Oracles will grant you a… Curious Oracle Hatchling

Toxic Wasteling

This pet drops during Love is in the Air from Apothecary Hummel in Shadowfang Keep.

This is also where you get the Love Rocket mount.

Ice Chip

This pet replaces the Scorched Stone pet in TBC, it’s now an Ice Elemental instead of a Fire Elemental. This pet drops from Ahune in the Slave Pens during the Midsummer Festival.

Spring Rabbit's Foot

This pet is obtained by handing in 100 Noblegarden Chocolates during Noblegarden, you can also obtain this pet by opening Noblegarden Chocolates.

Turkey Cage

The Achievements you need to have completed are...

Now we’re Cooking

After you’ve done all that you’re awarded with the pet.

Pint-Sized Pink Pachyderm

This pet is obtained during Brewfest for 100 Brewfest Prize Tokens.

Prize tokens are obtained by doing the activities for Brewfest.

Profession Pets

Pretty much all of these pets are from Engineering so let’s start with the ones that aren’t.

Magical Crawdad

To get this pet you first need to max out your fishing and get as much extra fishing skill you can until you hit 500 for a 100% catch rate. With max fishing you have a baseline of 375, you can bump it up to 475 with a Sharpened Fish Hook and if you only have a Big Iron Fishing Pole (or a Seth’s Graphite Fishing Pole) you can cover the difference with some Captain Rumsey’s Lager (+10), the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat (+5) or with the High Test Eternium Fishing Line (+5).

You have 2 options for the pole…

  • Arcanite Fishing Pole +35 fishing skill

  • Big Iron Fishing Pole +20 fishing skill

  • Seth’s Graphite Fishing Pole +20 fishing skill

With some combination of those items you should quite easily be able to get the 500 fishing skill needed for the 100% catch rate.

Here's how you obtain these items.
  • Sharpened Fish Hook

Bag of Fishing Treasures from Old Man Barlo, you get an average of 5, or you can purchase them from the auction house.

  • Arcanite Fishing Pole

Winning first place in the Stranglethron Fishing Extravaganza, you choose from either the pole or a trinket that turns you into a fish (Hook of the Master Angler). This item goes from +35 to +40 in WotLK and remains the best fishing pole you can have until legions artifact fishing pole.

  • Big Iron Fishing Pole

You can farm this from the coast of desolace, the lobster cages have a rare chance to drop the pole.

  • Seth’s Graphite Fishing Pole

This is obtained from a quest in Shattrath called Rather Be Fishin’, the quest is from an NPC called Seth (64, 16). The objective of the quest is to go to Silmyr Lake (39, 13) and collect 8 Pristine Shimmerscale Eels. Once you’ve done that the pole is yours

  • Captain Rumsey’s Lager

You get the recipe from the cooking daily and the materials for it are vendor items, makes 5, lasts 3 minutes.

  • Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat

Obtained from a Bag of Fishing Treasures from Old Man Barlo, comes with an inbuilt +75 fishing lure.

  • High Test Eternium Fishing Line

Obtained by fishing a rare fish (Dezian Queenfish) during the STV Fishing Extravaganza.

There’s also a Truesilver Fishing line that you get from the fishing daily but that’s only +3.

Alright now that you have 500 fishing skill make your way to Skettis, there you will find schools of fish called Highland Mixed School.

There are 10 pools in Skettis, 4 near Allerian Stronghold and 3 more near Stonebreaker Hold.

Keep going back and forth fishing every pool and eventually you’ll get an item called Mr. Pinchy. This is the item that will give you the pet but it’s not guaranteed, Mr. Pinchy has a total of 3 uses and each time you use him you need to wait 1 day before you can use him again.

The possible outcomes are

  1. He gives you the Magical Crawdad Box (pet).

  2. He summons a lobster guardian that fights for you.

  3. He summons a lobster that will start attacking you.

  4. He gives you a flask buff that increases your health by 1200.

  5. He gives you a gift box of Super Mana/Healing Potions.

Some people get it on their first Mr. Pinchy (like me) others took 3 or more.

I do advise that you get an addon called “Annoying Popup Remover” as when you actually fish up Mr. Pinchy a BoP popup will apear and if you have an addon like Fishing Buddy where you fish with double right click and you cast your line right after every catch, it will just cancel it and you just lost yourself a 1% drop and a potential pet. This happened to me twice, the first time I didn’t even know it happened and only noticed the second time.

Only reason I know I’ve missed one is because my fishing buddy tracks what you’ve fished up.

Mr. Pinchy seems to have a 1% catch rate.

Strand Crawler

This pet is obtained from the Bag of Fishing Treasures from the WotLK fishing daily quest giver, Marcia Chase (53, 65).

Giant Sewer Rat

You obtain this pet by fishing in the Dalaran Sewers.

Tranquil Mechanical Yeti

This is an engineering pet you can make after completing “Are We There Yeti” in Winterspring. After you’ve done this quest the NPC Umi Rumplesnicker has a follow up quest called “A Yeti of Your Own”

This pet is a BoE so you can sell this on the AH.

Mechanical Squirrel and Lifelike Toad

The recipe is a world drop and these pets can be sold on the AH.

Lil' Smokey

This is an engineering pet available only to Gnomish Engineers.

Tiny Walking Bomb

This is an engineering pet available only to Goblin Engineers.

World Drop Pets

You might go insane from farming these but if you put on some good music and just mindlessly farm them for a couple hours a week you’ll get them before you know it.

Whelpling drop chance
Number killed Chance to drop
100 8%
500 34%
1000 57%
1250 65%
1500 71%
1750 77%
2000 81%
2500 88%
3000 92%
4000 96%
5000 98%

While maybe not 1-1 it’s very close to what the chances are for each whelpling and should be very good at getting an idea of your current chances of getting that drop.

Emerald Whelpling

The Emerald Whelpling drops off of the Dreaming Whelplings in the Swamp of Sorrows, near the entrance to Deadwind Pass.

In Cataclysm this changes to Noxious Whelps in northern Feralas, near the entrance to Desolace.

This pet is BoE and can be sold the auction house.

Dark Whelpling

The Dark Whelpling drops off of the black dragons in Lethlok Ravine, Badlands.

In Cataclysm this changes to Ebon Whelp in Wetlands (SE of the Green Warden’s Grove) and the Scalding Whelps in Badlands (Lethlor Ravine).

This pet is BoE and can be sold the auction house.

Crimson Whelpling

The Crimson Whelpling drops off of the whelplings in Wetlands near the first gate to Grim Batol. (The Lost Whelps do not drop it)

In Cataclysm this can now drop from any mob from Wetlands.

This pet is BoE and can be sold the auction house.

Azure Whelpling

The Azure Whelpling drops off of the elite blue dragonkin in Azshara near where Azuregos is. Out of the three dragonkin, only the Mageweavers and Scalebanes can drop the pet.

In Cataclysm this pet now drops from any mob in Winterspring.

This pet is BoE and can be sold at the auction house.

Disgusting Oozeling

The Disgusting Ooze drops from Oozing Bags that you obtain from high level slimes, I advise you kill the ones in Western/Eastern Plaguelands as while the ones in Felwood might drop Oozing Bags, they can also drop a lower level bag which you don’t want.

This pet is BoE and can be sold at the auction house.

Green Wing Macaw

The Green Wing Macaw drops off of any mob inside the Deadmines dungeon

This pet is BoE and can be sold at the auction house.

Hyacinth Macaw

The Hyacinth Macaw is an extremely rare pet that has a chance to drop from every bloodsail mob in STV.

I’d say the drop chance is 0.001 rather than the normal 0.01

This pet is BoE and can be sold at the auction house.

Black Tabby Cat - Potentially Horde Only

The Black Tabby Cat is obtained by killing the Dalaran Spellscribe that surround Ambermill in Silverpine Forest.

I don’t think Alliance can farm this pet.

This pet is BoE and can be sold at the auction house.

Captured Firefly

The Firefly is an extremely rare drop from the Bogflare Needlers (the yellow fireflies) located near the top of Zangarmarsh along Serpent Lake.

This pet is BoE and can be sold at the auction house.

Razzashi Raptor

Drops off of the raptors inside Zul’Gurub

Gundrak Hatchling

Drops off of Gundrak Raptors in northern Zul’Drak

Darting, Deviate, Leaping, Ravasaur and Razormaw Hatchlings

These pets are obtained by interacting with a special nest in various zones associated with specific raptors; when you loot a nest you’re always going to get a raptor pet.

The nests don’t last forever and do despawn with a 1-2 hour respawn rate, so keep that in mind if you want a friend to have it they’ll need to be ready.

Darting - Dustwallow Marsh

Deviate - Farmed from the Raptors inside Wailing Caverns

Leaping - Takk’s Nest (Northern Barrens)

Ravasaur - Un’Goro, Marshlands

Razormaw - Wetlands, Raptor Ridge inside the cave.

You can expect people to be out in the world farming these in WotLK, personally I think you should be getting these done now, or at least as many as you can as soon as possible.

Vendor Pets

You can of course put these pets on the Neutral AH so if you have a friend on the other side then you can obtain these pets quite easily.

Hawk Owl and Great Horned Owl

Bought from the NPC called Shyenai located in Darnassus, near the entrance to the Night Elf starting zone. (65,40)

Snowshoe Rabbit

Dealer Rashaad in Netherstorm, (43,35) also sells the Senegal Parrot.

Cockroach

Dealer Rashaad in Netherstorm, (43,35) also sells this item.

Wood and Tree Frog

Sold by a vendor that only appears during the Darkmoon Faire, the NPC (Flik) that sells these items runs around chasing a frog.

The Wood Frog Box is a limited supply item but I don’t think that many people will actually buy it

Mana Wyrmling, Cockroach, Red Moth, Brown Rabbit, Crimson Snake, Senegal Parrot, Siamese Cat and Blue Dragon Hawk Hatchling

Sold by Dealer Rashaad in Netherstorm, (43,35)

Ghostly Skull

Purchased from the NPC Darahir in Dalaran for 40g (60,28)

Calico Cat, Albino Snake and Obsidian Hatchling

These pets are bought from the pet supplies NPC in Dalaran named Breanni (59,39)

Tickbird, White Tickbird, Cobra Hatchling and the Proto-Drake Whelp

These pets are obtained from the Mysterious Egg purchased from The Oracles Quartermaster in Sholazar Basin. You won’t find out what you’ve gotten until 7 (real) days have past.

You can also obtain a mount from this with a ~3% drop rate.

The egg is unique so you can’t buy a bunch, you need to do it one at a time.

Achievement Pets

Kirin Tor Familiar

This pet is obtained from the achievement Higher Learning, the achievement has you go around Dalaran clicking on specific books, these books spawn in specific locations and despawn once read I believe.

The book locations are...

[The Schools of Arcane Magic – Abjuration]

  • Location: Dalaran Visitor Center (52.2,55.5), on the floor to the right as you go in, in front of the little table with books on it

[The Schools of Arcane Magic – Conjuration]

[The Schools of Arcane Magic – Transmutation]

  • Location: Legerdemain Lounge (46.9,39.8), 1st floor western bookcase near the door.

Perky Pug

This pet is obtained by completing the achievement called Looking for Multitudes, to complete this you need to use the Dungeon Finder tool to finish random heroic dungeons until you’ve grouped with 100 random players total.

With WotLK Classic not having the Dungeon Finder, I’m not sure how this pet will be obtained.

It’s been said in an interview that the Perky Pug will be available in WotLK but didn’t elaborate how you obtain it (possibly vendor?)

Reeking Pet Carrier

This is obtained after getting the Achievement Shop Smart, Shop Pet…Smart for collecting 50 unique pets

Little Fawn's Salt Lick

This is obtained after getting the Achievement Lil’ Game Hunter for collecting 75 unique pets.

Reputation

Shimmering Wyrmling

This pet is bought from The Silver Covenant (Alliance) or The Sunreavers (Horde).

You need to be exalted with this faction to buy, costs 40 Champion’s Seals.

The Quartermasters are inside your factions pavilion in the Argent Tournament.

Pengu

Sold by the Kalu’ak Quartermaster, you’ll need exalted to be able to purchase it.

Tiny Sporebat

Can be bought once you’ve reached exalted with Sporeggar

Nether Ray Fry

Can be bought once you’ve reached exalted with the Sha’tari Skyguard

Raid/Dungeon Pets

Phoenix Hatchling

Drops off of Kael’thas Sunstrider in Magisters Terrace on both normal and heroic with heroic having the higher drop rate.

Mojo

You obtain this pet by looting Amani Hex Sticks and going towards the middle of the instance and using the item on the frogs that are in the area. When used they transform the frogs into people, the way you know that you’ve got Mojo is that when you use it no humanoid spawns. Mojo will go directly into your bags, an NPC doesn’t give you Mojo.

Vampiric Batling

This is only obtainable during the WotLK pre-patch, by a new boss that is added to Karazhan in the servant’s quarters just behind where you fight Attunmen the Huntsman.

The pet has a 100% drop chance and drops for everyone in the raid.

Potential Additions

Onyxia Whelpling

I’m not sure if this will be added into the game, it was originally added as an gift for WoW’s 6th anniversary. There’s no special way to acquire this pet, just hope that Blizzard will add it.

Frosty's Collar - Collectors Edition Pet

This was awarded to players who upgraded their account to WotLK, this might become the collector’s edition pet for WotLK if there were to be one.

It has indeed become the pet obtained from WotLK collectors edition.

Pandaren Monk, Lil' KT, Lil' XT

These pets were obtained by using real money, I don’t know if they’ll add them. They’re adding the store mount as a gold purchase so maybe it’s the same for these pets too?

/Miscellaneous/Pet

Works too, it also doesn’t have the search lag.

Not sure if this works on other AH addons but this can be used to see every pet that you can buy. It’s both for Horde and for the Alliance as I’ve made sure to include everything from both factions. It was made with TSM in mind.

I’m sorry if I missed anything.

Thanks for making a helpful thread, I’m more into mounts and pets than gear so it’s my kind of thing.

I need to make sure to get the bat at prepatch, that was one of my good memories of prepatch from last time.

TRU-FAX: I looted two Dark Whelplings doing those Black Dragon quests in Badlands during Classic

Posted both on the AH for 1G 99S instead of 199G 99S … instantly sold. :expressionless:

I know people compain about dead realms a lot here but if you are intrested in the TLPD then consider doing that before you leave a small server.

I spend over ten years hunting that mount before I got it in retail. The mount is not easy to get.

Time-Lost Proto-Drake - NPC - World of Warcraft (wowhead.com)

Link for more info on it, but the mount is on about a 16+ hour spawn time in the Storm Peaks. To make things worse the TLPD shares a spawn time with another rare and that rare has a higher spawn rate. There are about 4 or 5 spawn locations and you will want some kind of fall protection for this.

The one thing that does make this a bit nicer is everyone in a party of five will get this. There is a toy you can pick up in Dal as well to tag it without damaging the proto drake. I forget the name. Wowhead/the secret hunting discord will have more info if you are intrested in getting the mount.

lol even 199g for the Dark Whelping is cheap. I have seen those go for over 500g in the past.

Solid list!

Although if the companion pet achievement is your goal, I’d probably recommend getting some of the easier Wrath ones over some of these. The Hyacinth Macaw, especially, being stupidly difficult to find.

I am wondering if they’re ever going to implement the TCG pets, and now what might happen to the LFD Perky Pug.

I might update the list when WotLK comes out.

They might do what they did to the store mount and make them purchasable with gold.

Good point. This druid will be on Earthfury forever (I transferred my main druid but rerolled to keep my forum profile) so if nothing is done with the servers I’ll definitely be checking for it because maybe things will be account-wide at some point.

True story: That Time-Lost Proto Drake is why my brother says he quit WoW for good. He camped the spawns for 24 hours, got it, and then decided that he was too addicted to the game, and quit forever.

lol getting the TLPD is what stopped me from playing retail. I got my golden goose and I didn’t know what to chase anymore. 400+ mounts later.

I’ve updated the list to include WotLK pets.

I didn’t include TCG pets because they haven’t done anything about them in TBC.

WoW Head has comments from WotLK that talking about these pets, the most detailed of them being this…

By Shdwbane on 2009/10/25 (Patch 3.2.2)

PTR Notes (Build 10623):

  • Hatchlings: Leaping, Darting, Razormaw, and Ravasaur Hatchlings no longer drop from their associated rare creatures. Instead, there are now rare nests that spawn which contain these hatchlings. For example, the Leaping Hatchling can now be found in Takk’s Nest rather than as a drop from Takk the Leaper.

Dart’s Nest

Personal Notes:

  • Both the nests and rare spawn raptors can be up at the same time.

  • Rare spawn raptors no longer drop the mini pets; they can only be obtained from the nests.

  • 100% loot chance for the mini pets from nests.

  • Nests can only spawn near the location of the rare spawn raptors but not always in the same spot (almost certain).
Example: Dart’s nest can only be found around the location where Dart spawns even if it’s not in the same spot where it last spawned.

  • Nest spawn timer is about the same as rare spawn raptors on LIVE realms.

Maybe I missed it in the OP, but I remember doing some quest chain in Sholazar that rewarded either a pet from the Oracles or the Wolvar (you had to choose which side at the start). I think it was part of some Holiday event.

Dalaran Children’s Week

In WotLK there are 2 more pets to obtain from this event, Curious Wolvar Pup or a Curious Oracle Hatchling.

The pet is mailed to you and the pet you obtain depends on which orphan you take…

Little Orphan Kekek of the Wolvar will grant you a… Curious Wolvar Pup
Little Orphan Roo of the Oracles will grant you a… Curious Oracle Hatchling
