An open letter to whoever reads these things

Hi,

I’m Ray. I’ve been playing your game since the open beta way back in Vanilla. It was a hell of a time and I fell in love with this game straight off the bat just from an open beta. I quit my old games and I came to this one and I never looked back because I had always felt a pull from the lore of Azeroth and the Warcraft franchise. Playing the game was great, and learning more about things that had only been hinted at in games like Warcraft I, II, and III was like reading a book, and I was a part of the script.

For years I stuck with the game. I watched the rise and fall of races, villain’s, heroes and other such people come and go with the passage of time. I watched the change of the land in Cataclysm, and I watched the change of the Alliance and the Horde in regards to that shift. I stuck through it, knowing that the story was something I was really impressed with and loved.

I started becoming less and less interested in the story about… hmm…Legion? Some of the things you guys added were ok, but a lot of them left me scratching my head. Time travel, alternate realities, the two merging with Azeroth and a huge sword which got stuck in the planet and forgotten about for two expansions. I grew cynical and just kinda shrugged it all away because I was becoming less involved in the game and becoming more casual. The game was losing my focus and I was growing bored with the same hashed out content reused over and over again and storylines that made no sense.

With the coming of Vanilla, Burning Crusade and soon Wrath classic I saw a chance to go back to the lands I grew old with and maybe regain some Nostalgia. It worked! I fell in love again but unfortunately had to deal with your money grabbing schemes in the process. Character boosts, free mounts, other stupid nonsense that were kinda pointless.

NOW you’re dipping into the pinnacle of enjoyment in Wrath of the Lich King. I don’t get it, I just don’t. You’re messing with something that isn’t even bad, broken, or needs fixing. Wrath was fine when it was put out and doesn’t need help making it better. The sad part is, it’s like you yourselves don’t even play your own game. It’s like the people who are doing these things are looking at retail and saying - Wow man we should add this to the Wrath launch and make it better! This isn’t retail man. You did this expansion, it was done, dusted and loved by thousands of people and yet for some reason that I personally can’t understand you have decided to tinker with it.

How hard is it to just release Wrath, how it was, and say to the community “Here you go! Enjoy!”,? Who is telling you that we need all these changes and when did they start (if ever) playing your game? Legion? Do they play Final Fantasy? Do they even have any experience in this game at all? At this point, i’m starting to see why people are leaving and man i’m close to being one of them. I’m sure this will get hammered and probably deleted, do what you will. I just needed to vent.

Fully agree except for the “loved by thousands of people” where I think you meant millions. Other than this trivial inaccuracy, this is a perfect representation of the typical player so thank you for your contribution to the discussion.

About the same difficulty as just trying to release Classic was, and how quickly that changed based on how the playerbase approached the gameplay.

It sucks, but I don’t blame Blizzard. I don’t agree with every change they did do, or problem they ignored, and I specifically hate the increased monetization, but I don’t blame them entirely either for it.

The playerbase, at least the forum playerbase, is pretty heavily divided on how to approach Classic. Some want zero changes, some want some changes, some want entirely revamped changes. Personally I believe in attempting to preserve the spirit of Classic as best as possible, but I’ve moved away from no changes because no changes gets you toxic gameplay like the WBuff meta which leads to raid logging, and hardcore griefing by people trying to ruin your raid night by ganking, etc.

I don’t really have much faith in Blizzard themselves these day, but they aren’t going to delete you thread because you shook your fist at them.

None of the current developers likely even played Vanilla or Burning Crusade, nor did they work on it. They don’t care about loyalty.

Guaranteed to be true.

Also likely to be true, sadly.

Raid-logging happens in TBCC with zero World Buffs.

They have a habit of deleting threads criticizing their decisions.

No, they have a habit of deleting rage threads, or threads that degenerate into uncivil discussion.

This thread isn’t going anywhere unless the latter happens.

They have a habit of deleting Pro-RDF threads, regardless of context. This has been proven SEVERAL times over the last two months. Notice how there’s next to no threads on the matter anymore?

I was pretty solidly in the no changes camp for a long time. But then I saw the game being exploited and cheesed so much that I changed my thinking. I now support changes that attempt to maintain the integrity of the gameplay and RPG experience. Remember that Blizzard is owned by a bunch of stock holders that likely never played this game or any Blizzard game. The way modern businesses operate is to squeeze and underpay their workers. Honestly, we should appreciate what we got.

There’s literally a 3500 post thread openly debating RFD on the main page, but hey whatever fits the agenda you want to push.

ONE thread? You’re arguing with me over one thread remaining? Really? Where did I say they removed EVERY thread? I said they have a tendency of removing Pro-RDF threads, which is true.

I’d believe this, but it’s a proven fact (and public knowledge) that Race/Faction Change operated at a 100% profit margin, so where is that?

8 threads? Congratulations. How many do you think have been created since April 19th? 8?

Honestly, I’m not going to keep going off the rails with you on this. There’s various reasons as to why Blizzard would delete a thread, spam being one of them.

I bash Blizzard when I need to, but thread deletion because they got their feelings hurt for being called out on a design choice isn’t one of them.

I don’t need or care for you to ‘bash’ them for deleting threads. It’s common knowledge they do this. Heck, I was actually in a thread as it was being deleted. In regards to a reason being spam, technically EVERY thread after the FIRST about RDF (for or against) is considered spam because it’s posting about the same topic, yet they haven’t deleted every one of them?

Blizzard needs to make money to stay open and making content. Classic brought back many older players that left. Blizzard will get a nice jump in sales and subs just from launch, the problem is the game is a monthly sub. They need people to stay subbed for as long as possible.

Wotlk to classic Wotlk mmos have changed, gaming has changed, gamers have changed. What gamers expect now is very different, the game needs to evolve on its already amazing base. Some things need to be upgraded and changed. In 2019 when I first heard and started classic I was excited. What I hoped for was using Classic as a bridge to a “WoW 2”. I think Wotlk might be the sweet spot to merge Retail and classic into a “Wow 2”. You can see how retail effects classic and also how classic has effected retail.

I look at it like a big bowl of ice cream. The ice cream is great as it always is but it doesn’t hurt to add the whip cream and sprinkles on top.

“spam being one of them”
Multiple threads arguing against yet another foolish decision by Blizzard isn’t spam, its community feedback. Deleting an entire thread because someone in that thread spammed? That’s - again - foolish.

Every time Blizzard ignores community feedback at this scale, the playerbase is proven correct and the Blizzard Peons (Defenders of their decision) are proven wrong.
-Artifact weapon trees being wildly imbalanced (rogues)
-Legiondaries being randomly acquired
-Azerite armor (For so many reasons… “Lack of choice because of spec-based options” “acquisition” “not scaling in mythic+” “higher level items requiring higher HoA levels”)
-Essences. Just everything about essences.
-Corruptions and the vendor being added late, and on a rotation.
-Covenants being tied to player power
-Soulbinds
-Spell batching
-Dual spec changes

I’m from vanilla as well, and highly agree with the op story as it is also my story, and I’m sure a whole mess of folks who play this game.

I still really would like a que “looking for” raid/dungeon/battleground finder button though

everything else can just stay according to a classic rules.

Thank you everyone for your words. I’m glad to hear that there are other people who think like I do in the fact that Blizzard is doing a bit too much with an expansion we love. Suffice to say, the sad reality is that I know our voices alone are not going to make a difference. Suffice to say that we all know Blizzard will continue on with their “Plans for the betterment” regardless of what we or anyone else thinks.

I honestly wish there was something we could do to get them to see what we see, however every day that goes by it’s almost like they can’t see the forest for the trees.

A personal note to any Blizzard employee which may stumble onto this thread :

“I wish you saw the same thing in your game that most of your player-base did. Then maybe you would listen to the players instead of the Shareholders.”

I’m Cauchy, and I’m an alcoholic.

Crap… wrong room.

Have you misplaced your stray jacket? I’m sure we can find you a replacement.

Classic hasn’t affected Retail, except in the way that Classic has stolen a number of its players.

“Lich King Classic” is not like a bowl of ice cream… It’s like receiving a box of Slim Fast in a wrapped PS5 box.

Oh, Blizzard sees it. Heck, even their team is split on the idea, so they’re well aware of it. The higher-ups just don’t want it in the game. I’m kinda thinking everything should be in RDF, but you should have to form groups manually for Wailing Caverns.

Wait… do you think forum moderators are the same ones making the decisions on RDF? That’s absolutely not true. Forum moderates are here to enforce the CoC – nothing else. They don’t care to take sides… as evidenced by the fact you can find threads everywhere on this website criticizing Blizzard’s decisions.
