A hotfix went out not too long ago, but it seems some players are getting stuck with a “Error Applying Update” message. If you’re running into this go ahead and try out the steps on the links below first:
If the issue persists we can try something a bit more advanced depending on the root cause of the error. You may not be able to identify this so doing them one by one would be the preferred way to go:
Can't download the update due to security
Typically caused by a firewall or other network restriction to our CDN (Content Delivery Network). You’ll want to add these to a white list or exceptions list for any security programs or modem/router. If you’re not sure on how to do any of these please refer to someone locally that may be more familiar with this:
We can override where some information gets written to. We can do that override by specifying --tank_hotfixPath on the command line. You will have to add a file path for this during.
Open the options via the Battle.net app
Go to Game Settings, if not already there
Scroll down to Overwatch and click the “Additional command line arguments”
Add this to it: --tank_hotfixPath [new file path]
Example: --tank_hotfixPath d:\temp
Out of disk space or local file corruption
Close the client, do the steps for “Can’t write to disk due permissions”
Clear some disk space on your C:\ drive. You can do this manually or via Windows tools like disk cleanup. Just need to make some extra room on it.
Having this issue I have tried all of these fixes including a full removal of both battle net launcher and Overwatch and no luck… have tons of hard-drive space have also tried removing the cache… At a loss I know its not my network though, right next to me the game is being played no problem on the same network.
Dear Uldrision.
I keep getting the same error message. I deleted the Blizz folder, I reinstalled the game (twice), my connection is perfect, I have more than enough space on the PC. The hotfix came out about 2 days ago and has been successfully applied. I have played since that day without any problem. I only got the message today. It says:
Error applying update
Unknown error (HF-1)
Do you have any other option that I could try? Would be a big help. Thank you!
I tried everything that was suggested but in the end i removed folder with last hotfix (64176) from appdata, then i removed battle.net folder from programdata and it worked.
P.s. Don’t confuse programdata with program files!
Thank you to everyone! I just went ahead and deleted literally everything related to it. I did not want to get to this point, because I have almost all of the games installed, but I think it is only a small price to pay. I reinstalled everything, and it is fixed now. I don’t have the error message anymore.
I was helping my wife troubleshoot this, not sure if this was just a very weird thing on her machine. We found this in the logs
W 2019-12-14 02:23:37.453792 [RemoteContentManager] {http} Request failed. url=https ://nydus.battle.net/App/enUS/client/App/alert?targetRegion=US statusCode=0 err=Could not resolve proxy: https_proxy=<your_https_proxy

We were able to reproduce by doing
curl "link from the logs"
Which also said something about could not resolve your proxy " https_proxy=<your_https_proxy"
We found there was an environment variable for https_proxy for some reason on her system. After deleting it, and then deleting the programdata battle.net and hotfix folder, it finally worked. This might have been super specific to her machine, but sharing just in case anyone else is hitting their head against the wall.
Just started getting this error today (game was fine as of yesterday). Will wait on another hotfix for now, but may start messing around with the folders if it persists.
On the 12th I had difficulty downloading the OW update. It kept pausing and starting over, and then I decided to uninstall the game. Then it wouldn’t reinstall, so I uninstalled the battle.net launcher. Now I can’t even download the battle.net launcher without a message “Whoops! Looks like something broke. We’ll try to fix it, so try again later.” I haven’t been able to play for a week, I’ve gone through and deleted my localappdata and programdata files over and over. Nothing is working. I have over 300GB of space left, and I’ve tried numerous things. It doesn’t seem like anything is working. Help???
Tried reinstalling, deleting the Blizzard Entertainment in %localappdata%, ive got plenty of storage space and tried different networks and still seems to give me the error applying update unknown error (hf-1)
thanks now i cant open battle net and even reinstall new one (either battle net or the overwatch game). thank you so much for the advice. really helpful. i can’t even complain on the customer support.
