It is required now during set up. I have the old Physical auth and it still works. They did not remove our Auths, but if I were to get a new one I would have to link a valid phone number as part of set up.
I also have an old authenticator but I stopped using it when I read on-line that when the battery dies, you are unable to get into your account and it is lost unless you are willing to email copies of gov’t ID to Bllizzard (which obviously I would not feel comfortable doing).
Do they have something else in place for this now? For someone who does not have a cell phone so will not be getting the phone app regardless?
it was new like 20 years ago. my motherboard from 2013 has eufi. what do you consider “new” about it?!
i swear im picturing some people in this thread arent even at computers, but are in desolate shacks furiously writing under a bare bulb and handing them off to someone else to post for them. and it just makes this thread even funnier!
Correct. To remove it yourself you need to have the serial number and a code from it (so it has to be working). There MIGHT be an option to send a text to your phone if your phone is already set up on Blizzards text messaging system. I have not tried.
To have Blizz remove it you would need to send ID. Blizz does destroy the ID when the ticket is done. They have to comply with the Personally Identifiable Information laws for California and and the Federal level. https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/26516
No, they don’t have any other options right now. That is my complaint. You used to be able to use an old iPod or tablet. The need to have a phone number that is not pre-paid or VOIP is an issue for some.
I am going to have to eventually do this all myself. sigh I like my hardware auth token.
Boo freaking hoo OP. Grow up and download the authenticator. It’s so easy and gives you an extra layer of protection for 0$. Plus you get extra bag space and a pet.
Most of the spam is done by third party websites that “sell” services. It is against the terms of use, but most are compromised accounts.
Having an Auth does a lot to prevent an account from being stolen and used to advertise.
Blizz can’t reach most of those websites legally, given the countries they are in.
Requiring an Auth not only keeps an account secure, you need a valid contract cell phone registered in the same country as the account address to set it up. Changing a country on an account requires providing proof to CS.
So if someone in EU compromised a US account and then tried to set up a cell phone auth on it, that would not work.
It is not bullet proof, but it should cut down a lot on the spam we see in Group finder.
It was the only way they would let me retrieve this account when I couldn’t remember and then get into the email attached to it.
(Oddly enough the memory just popped into my head when I was at work. And then I couldn’t remember the password for the email account and that was another journey and a half.)
So if I have a cellphone, Blizzard will let me back into my account when my authenticator dies? Without any ID?
