Neither has the multitude of others that get compromised for the very first time. The money Blizzard spends alone on overhead, payroll, etc. of restoring accounts is enough of a justification to require this. The fact it should help curtail the spam as well? Frosting on the cake.
Why would they sell something that they give away for free? And as an aside, this will work on ANY device with the apple store or google play. Tablets, Ipod, an old cell phone with no service connected to your wifi.

No, it doesn’t. I tried but they wanted a cell phone number and not a pre-paid one either, which I could have swung. It is covered above in the thread.

basically RMT boosts would struggle to sell because of this, they would need to have a smart phone per account, easier to hit banwaves on multiple accounts this way

That is a common trope these days. However the only thing you are telling them is: Good job, what you intended is working as intended.
If they wanted to cut down account hacking they could have just required an authenticator for everyone rather than holding the LFG tool functionality hostage.
This remains to be seen. I’m staring at trade right now. Nothing but the same spam for gold communities, keys, etc. So no dice there.
Is group finder cleaner? For now.
I’m curious what percentage of those WTS groups were compromised accounts vs. throw away accounts. Most times I would armory a WTS group creator … it was obviously a throw away account.
The level 60 requirement cleaned up the LFG tool quite a bit. There are many other less invasive means to prevent WTS groups.
The least they could have done was make LFG more usable. You can’t search on their new “quick clear, standard, etc.” options. They could’ve removed free-form text and added labels so I can specify how far I’m clearing or what classes/specs/roles I need. How about an icon to distinguish melee dps from ranged dps which should have been there 8 years ago?
Nope. None of that, just a complete surrender to the 3 or 4 WTS groups. Maybe it was worse in the PvP or M+ queues, but raids had cleaned up dramatically from launch.
Oh well, things must be going well. Only 10 heroic groups in LFG tool during prime time atm (yikes).
Right, but you can do it from the PC. Advisable or otherwise.

Is your cell number set up with Blizzard text system? If so, maybe. I have not tested using it to remove the Auth.
I have a phone call - will be back to check more of this later and update. Will look into it more.
To whomever asked about typing in chat, no you don’t need an Auth.
Im experiencing more issues with this LFG change. Have the auth, SMS service, but cant apply to any group. Or better, I can apply and it just cancel some seconds after. Sometimes double the apply in the API. And Also if I post a group the thing dont allow me to accept anyone applyes… Tried to turn off addons and the whole thing seems to “work” again (it is slow…) Dont have any suspect addon, and dont want to stop using raider io…but im not sure it is, could be another. but i dont use alot, really. wtf anyone more?

It sucks, but this is the best alternative. You literally only need to use it when signing in on a new device. If this means there is going to be less LFG spam, then it is worth it 100%.

This is how behind I am. I didn’t even know there was a Windows 11. 
If their goal is locking legit paying customers of a vital feature of their game then good job. Makes me not want to play their game cause of this whole thing.
I am not some new player either I had this account since WotLK.
They don’t care this is how they treat their players no wonder everyone is quitting.
Oh I already got my KSM mount also. I only found out I couldn’t make a M+ group when I opened the group finder. I wanted to see how the aoe changes where in M+ so now I can’t do that unless I join someone elses group.
