5V5 is a mistake

200 replies deep in some irrelevant topic is usually where these things get posted.

And when they do get posted as their own thread, it’s usually 9 paragraphs that somewhere hidden in all the usefocused mess are some design ideas without any specifics.

Or the “Well I posted a good post 2 years ago, dunno why that’s not enough to get devs current attention”

I don’t think 5v5 is a mistake, I think the hellbent attitude on role lock/restriction is the key mistake in all of this. If they would just try harder to balance things around 3 tanks or 3 supports it would be okay probably, or they could literally allow any combination possible in 5v5, and the game would infinitely be more fun. The game is supposed to be fun first, not hyper-competitive and boring, when will people realize this most basic concept?

I’m sorry, I’ve got to jump in here and say that 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 6.

And 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 5

Cuz shooting shields is not fun. And Blizz cannot stop making shield tanks.

Ok, fixed the maths.

Also there are other ways of implementing shields, damage resistance, etc. In fact, characters like WreckingBall and Roadhog don’t have any shields whatsoever, or at least not any for their teammates. Tanks could simply be used for Crowd Control.

Couldn’t they just add a cap on the amount of Main Tanks and Off Tanks there can be on any team?

TBH blizzard knows that better than anyone here does

Maybe, but what they’ve shown is lacklustre at best and horribly stupid at second best.

By adding one more player for each team to the mix
Duh. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m thinking the decision to go 5v5 was directly related to how few people queue for tank roles. Reduce by half the number tanks required to start a match, and you cut your queue times in half before you’ve even done anything with the rest of the game. I’d bet Blizz considered changing OW1 to 5v5 as well, but decided it wasn’t worth it to re-balance the entire roster in a game that was nearly obsolete.

Whether it ends up being a mistake or not, we’ll have to play it for ourselves. It’s all about how the balance with other heroes comes out. If they screw it up (likely) then 5v5 will be awful. If they manage to get it right, it’ll still be fun.

I mean I’ve probably spent more time on the concept than most Blizzard employees…

Hard for me to take that seriously. You have spent more time working on converting ow2 to 5s than blizzard?

Spent more time investigating how to fix queue times in role queue, and increase tank popularity.
✅ [2-2-2] Putting RoleQ into Quickplay

Heck, I was working on that idea, before Role Queue was even announced.

✅ [Role Select] Finalizing this concept

Probably covered every potential option, including 5v5 with role passives.
✅ Next Experiment: 1-2-2 SoloTank

those posts are not nearly enough for me to believe you know more than blizzard

So what would evidence like that look like?

How about extensive experience on getting suggestions into other similar games. Or designing server code for a tournament tier class based shooter.
Tanks and what do we do? - #16 by GreyFalcon-11737

Really though, I’ve easily spent at least 600 hours on the subject of role queue and tank desirability.

Including modeling tanks on class based shooter “Heavies”, which seems to be the direction they are going.
I miss any "Tanks from FPS games"?

Is 5v5 a mistake? Not necessarily. Could work.

Is converting current OW to 5v5 a hell of a lot more work than the dev team anticipated? Certainly appears that way.

Don’t envy them with amount of work that needs to be done in the limited amount of time they have. Wish them luck.

Just take the L, you have no idea what the hell is going on compared to Blizzard.

I think they should make a 6V6 and 7V7 (and higher) gamemodes in the arcade, just so we can properly compare how each of these match-ups play and find the best option.

I don’t think feel like 5v5 is a mistake if they actually make the Tanks a Tank not a Roadhog type Tank. Don’t go over the hedges with Supports.

They haven’t done much, if anything to show why it’s a good idea. Tanks are just Damage now, Support suck and Damage are faster, meaning they are even more obnoxious.

Lol this is the reason i stopped flex picking all together and went straight dps main plus i will likely never play pvp in ow2 just the pve mode seeing how toxic the pvp community is

how do we know if its bad or good when we havent even played it yet
