[Merc] Again, fake "Duplicate Protection" & drop rates!

In the Dead-Mine Version, I spent 61 packs to get my 1st Legendary Merc (not even any Legendary Portraits meanwhile).

I’m not alone. There were also many other hot discussions about this, such as this one.

This time, I did another suffering experiment, I’ve bought 44 packs so far, without getting a Legendary Mercenary. Maybe at the 15th pack, there was a portrait this time before I get a missing merc? However, where is the “duplicate protection”???

There is another thing they are cheating on you, coins.

  • When I’m opening the packs now, the majority of them are pure-coin-packs hardly portraits, though I still have lots of portrait to earn.
  • Especially, there is a big proportion that they still frequently send you the coins of what your Merc has been already MAXED! while you still have many other mercs in the same rarity still need coins.

Yeah, they didn’t 100% clarified that promise accurately. I know. However, don’t you feel you’ve been tricked after keep experiencing such things? The game has been more and more buggy too, but the obvious significant difference are only the growth of the paid bundles. Besides, along with the news these years, the arrogant Blizzard is not the one we used to trust.

They never promised duplicate protection for mercenaties packs. Thus, a sane person would never expect it.

According to the original official post,
“You are guaranteed one new Mercenary Card in each Mercenaries Pack until you have all Mercenaries of a rarity tier”
So how does that explain that I got a Legendary portrait of which merc I already have before I get a missing legendary merc?

Q: What’s in a Mercenaries Pack?

A: A Mercenaries Pack can be purchased for 100 Gold, like current Hearthstone packs. A Mercenaries Pack includes 5 Mercenaries items, which can include new Mercenary Cards, Mercenary Coins, or Mercenary Portraits. You are guaranteed one new Mercenary Card in each Mercenaries Pack until you have all Mercenaries of a rarity tier. The rates for Legendary and Epic Mercenary Cards are equivalent to the rates for Legendary and Epic cards in traditional Hearthstone packs.

I also quotes the drop rates from official website. So, how many packs do you as a “sane person” ever expect to open to get a legendary? 80 or 100?

Rarity of Cards and Card Drop Rates

Cards can be of three different rarities: Rare, Epic, and Legendary.

  • Rare Cards: Each card pack contains at least one rare card or better.
  • Epic Cards: One epic card can be obtained in five card packs on average.
  • Legendary Cards: One Legendary card is guaranteed within the first 10 packs of a new card expansion. Subsequent Legendary cards can be obtained in 20 card packs on average.

every time they add a new a rare i open as many packs and i always get those rares …

The drop rates are the same. There never is or was a pity timer. And the guaranteed merc only refers to rare mercs (all mercs of a rarity tier), since if you can open a pack that guarantees a merc, and mercs give you 3 packs through tasks, then you’ll own everything in days. The pack system is working correctly, Blizzard just explained it badly. In my opinion, it’s fine the way it is, but we really need duplicate protection. See my 54 packs to open Valeera as yet another example of why no pity timer is dumb.

Mercenary Portraits drops are separated from Mercenary Cards. Therefore, you may obtain a Mercenary Portrait prior to obtaining its Mercenary Card. Duplicate Protection won’t help you here as Portraits and Cards are different items.

Incorrect. You will not obtain the portrait of a merc you do not own.

sadly that was not the case on launch. Not sure how it is now.

If if you get a portrait, you can still use the merc with the portrait. You just can’t switch to the base portrait.

Zeddy opened about 200 pack on launch and still couldn’t use malfurion, despite getting a portrait for him, at launch. It may be different now.

“Occasionally, you may obtain a Mercenary Portrait prior to obtaining its Mercenary Card. When that happens, you will be able to play that Mercenary with the Mercenary Portrait, and you could get the Mercenary Card from packs.”

In my memory, the official announcement said if you got a Mercenary Portrait before you get that Merc Card, you can still use that portrait as a merc, but with THAT SPECIFIC PORTRAIT ONLY.

I just can’t tell though. Cuz such a case never happened to me during opening pack. I always get a portrait after I got the related merc. Well, maybe this make sense: I bought the pre-order of Diablo, I could use it before I earn the Diablo basic merc.
