Medivh wasn’t mind controlled. He was influenced by Sargaras from a young age. Many of his decisions were his own, especially if we want to consider the Movie or Medan universe as canon. I understand the Movie is noncanon or an AU or whatever. But as far as I can tell, Medan is still canon, so Medivh did have a Love Interest on Dreanor with Garona.
So while he was influenced by Sargaras, he was manipulated by Saragaras, he wasn’t mind controlled, and he had his own reasons and ambitions for opening the Dark Portal. It is not unlike the same thing Azshara did.
But really, the big take away here is this. You have people who misuse their magical power for evil reasons. But it is only mages and wielders of the Arcane, who are lured by the promises of power and arcane might, and will suffer a fall from grace because of that lure.
There is a reason for this. The Arcane and Fel are the only forces that have no moral associated with them. Powers over life and death come with a moral of preserving the Balance. So you have the Emerald Nightmare, and the Druids of the flame abandoning their morals in the pursuit of something else. Same with Dark Shamanism, the Holy Light, perhaps even the Void to some degree.
But with the Arcane… The only moral is the pursuit and acquisition of knowledge. It is completely self serving. So while there have been bad druids, shaman and priests, I cannot say it is because of their magic. I can say, however, that the problems created by arcane wielders have been done without any abandonment of morals or virtue that the Arcane necessitates.
Kel’thuzzard, Illidan, Kael’thas, even Medivh, committed their evil deeds because of the Arcane’s promise of individual might, and that service to the ego is what corrupts people.
