When are the names from WoD gonna be freed up?

There’s a name that I want that hasn’t been on since 2015, and the character hasn’t been played since 2011. In the form reply I received a few minutes ago, they said that in Legion, character names that haven’t been on since Mists were “going to be” available.

So we’re six months into BfA and WoD names aren’t freed up? What gives?

You may have missed a very important caveat to this statement in that “form letter.”

A name is only freed up if it’s on an account that hasn’t been logged into for two expansions. If the name is on a level one character, but that character is on an account that has another character higher than 110? It won’t be released for two more expansions.

Basicly when blizzard is ready to release them if they havent done so already. That being said if they already did so and the name hasnt been freed up that would mean the account is still active.

Considering the “Level 85” achievement hasn’t been achieved account-wide, I don’t think that’s the case.

And that’s the thing. We’re told about this system that’s supposed to handle everything on its own, but not told when it works, how it works, any of that. Is there something no one’s triggered yet, or what? I don’t want to give my character a new name only for someone to realize they’ve been asleep at the keyboard for the last six months and trigger this on Monday, but at the same time I want to play my character before the next expac in case it’s already triggered.

From what I understand, it’s completely automated, if a name is eligible, it’s freed up, otherwise choose a different name

If its what blizzard says happens then its gospel there no other way to know.

And we don’t need to. We’re given everything we need to know in order to take action. If you aren’t able to take the name today, it’s still unavailable. Try again tomorrow. Or the next day, or the next. Information is kept sparse to keep everyone on the same playing field.

Here’s the thing, even if they did announce when the next name release is going to be, that doesn’t mean the account holder won’t add game time and log in to secure their names. They don’t even have to play to a certain level or gain a specific achievement.

When they first announced doing this, my main account was inactive. I didn’t want to lose any of my names so I added some game time and hung out in-game for a bit. Eventually it even lead to me starting to play again.

Personally, when a name I want isn’t available, I find another one that I’m happy to play with. There are a lot of name generation sites out there too that can help you choose a fun or possibly even better name

If the character has not been logged into the achievment’s will not have updated so how do you know they have not been playing another character?

Correct, unlike in the past where we released them in bulk and announced it. Now, the system will check if a character is eligible when a player tries to create a character with the same name.

  • If the name IS eligible to be released, the system will automatically rename it and allow the new character to be created.
  • If the name is NOT eligible for release, the system will inform the user that the character name they are attempting to use is unavailable.

This information is different from what we have in the KB, perhaps you should update it.

Holy necro, Batman! Though the most-relevant and up-to-date information is included in the Support Article linked in the post right before yours-- what seems amiss? Admittedly, “the KB” doesn’t hold much meaning for me.

This thread is also 18 months old.

In this context, they likely mean Knowledge Base.

It’s not a recurring subject, no point in making a new thread.

Read the post and the article, the information is different.

If a thread is more then 3 months old its a necro and new threads are prefered as information tends to change rather rapidly.

That’s the very reason why you don’t resurrect an 18 month old thread.

It’s almost as if the article has been updated in the year and a half since that post was made.

That tends to happen with a post that’s 18 months old and an article that was updated a week ago, thus my commenting that the most-relevant and up-to-date information is in the official article.
