When you created your account you agreed to follow Blizzard’s rules while playing their game. Their rules say no profanity. It’s really simple.
You’re free to ignore that rule, but your actions will have consequences if you’re reported and yeah, you’re going to have to live with that if you can’t control yourself.
This has always made me wonder… can you be racist in roleplay? What I mean by that is does it technically break tos if you treat Man’ari draenai differently or charge half elves more next patch?
It seems silly but to be frank im not sure if it is allowed anymore and I know if I make a thread asking about it that it would turn into a trash fire.
They have the right to remove access, delete accounts, or do whatever for any reason they see fit according to their own terms. There’s legal framework in their protecting their decisions no matter what as it’s just a license.
But we must be free to curse! Cursing is a god given right and relieves stress. This is an adult game and as such we should be allowed to be as vulgar, within reason of course, as we like.
Can you be racist in-game while roleplaying? Yes, you can be. If you want your character to hate Draenei or Man’ari they absolutely can and there’s nothing Blizzard will do about it unless you move from simple roleplaying into harassment territory, in which case Blizzard will step in and tell you to stop.
HOWEVER
If you use racist language from the real world, such as, say, the N word or any other slur to describe someone because your ‘character is racist and that’s totally something they’d say’ that will 100% get them banned. As will using racist or supremacist slogans, actions etc. If you tried to RP as a German WW2 soldier in Azeroth, you’d be banhammered so hard that all that would be left of your account is dust.
It is very situational I assume. If your character does not like orcs and refuses to trade with them, that may be in keeping with their backstory. You can even say you hate orcs because they stole your candy, or whatever.
What people can’t do is try to mask real life racism and insults with roleplay. Sometimes people do cross too far from a good backstory and char motivation, to blatant horribleness.
The addon makers have worked with Blizzard so that things can be reported from the RP addons now. This change happened several years ago. It can result in an odd reason for penalty - it shows up as “disruptive gameplay” when the person gets their penalty email. No idea why it flags as that category, but it does.
I honestly think I would lean towards it not being allowed unless it was portrayed extremely mildly. I think if you went beyond more playful insults and not really treating anyone differently it would get stomped down on pretty hard.
It just seems… I don’t know I want to say odd but its not really is it? More… annoying human resourcesish.
I don’t think it’s the fact that you swore. I’m pretty sure it’s the result of people reporting you for language. There’s a clear distinction here.
You have to realize that people are extremely sensitive about everything nowadays, so unless you’re charismatically cunning with your words, these things are going to happen to you.
That must be it. Aside from a few stalwart hold outs whose skin is thick and will is iron like the OP, everyone is sensitive and frail. You figured it out. Let’s get this to the campaign so they can get on top of it.
No, I don’t think so. Colorful language is used every single day in this 20 year old game. They only take action if it’s reported. They aren’t directly policing it independently.
I feel like people forget that etiquette and manners have existed for all human existence. There is a time and a place for things. Public chat around strangers, school, work, etc are usually places we avoid using profanity, colorful slang, insults, etc.
Being polite is not exactly new. I think people just forget that they are not alone with their friends when they are in public chat channels in game. Behave like you would (hopefully) around strangers at a public all ages family friendly event.
These are super old manners. You can even transmog a top hat if if helps
I suspect you are leaving out a word from that interaction, because I see no reason why “goofie” alone would trigger a ban. Was there perhaps another word that would be considered profanity included in the sentence you typed?
You can most certainly roleplay a racist assuming it doesn’t let real world politics bleed into it. Then there’s also another thing with language. As long as it’s silly and cartoony you can get away with it but as soon as it gets “too real” it becomes blatantly offensive.
When are you moving your thread to the Customer Support forum?
The only one “soft” here is someone being upset that they broke the rules and got penalized for it. If you decide to break the rules, at least have a backbone and own up to it. Take responsibility for your own actions instead of trying to blame everyone else for their “reaction”.
You control your fingers, nobody else. You, and only you, are responsible for what happens as a result.
