They really ban players for swearing

It is not, and if it was they would expect adults to behave as such.

No, it is not except in Australia I think. Regardless, the GAME rating covers the content that is created by Devs and reviewed by the various regulation boards. It covers game content that can be reviewed ONLY.

Blood and Gore, Crude Humor, Mild Language, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol, Violence

  • Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB

Player interactions (names and chat) are not rated. They have to follow the game company policies which for Blizzard have always been very family friendly. That includes their M rated games. EVERYTHING falls under one language policy.

See this post if you need a reminder of just how old these same rules are. They go back to the original terms we agreed to.

P.S. Something does not have to be offensive to be simply inappropriate. People seem to think everyone is up in arms over a bad word. They are not. The only people who get up in arms seem to be the ones who can’t control their own fingers and realize there is a time and a place for things. If you agree to the rules, don’t get shocked when they get upheld. Keep the colorful chat to private spaces with friends who won’t report you.

Ok maybe when I fist bought the game it was an 18 an older game

But you just used the word in your Op though, right? I think you are calling yourself out here.

WoW has never been rated M in the US, EU, or Asia. As far as I know the only place it has ever gotten an M rating was Australia I think.

You can easily google the original box art to see the ratings.

My kid plays.

But he’s 22.

I consider it M rated. You can say and do whatever you want to people.

Yeah I’d be cussing all the time then. GET OFF YOUR COMPUTER YOU’RE USING UP THE INTERNETS!

You cannot. As is demonstrated in this very thread where the OP is complaining that he got an account action for swearing.

Funny I see it all the time.

So report things that really break the rules. Contrary to some of the theories, Blizzard does not have AI scanning our chats, yet. They depend on people using the in-game reporting tools.

WoW is rated T for Teen, meaning anyone from the age of 13+ can play this game. They’re not supposed to own an account until they’re 18 though, which is the way it is thanks to contract law. Minors can’t enter contracts without parental consent, and you’re a minor in the US until you reach the age of 18.

Way back in the 90s when i was in MIS we had this supervisor from another department who would burst in shouting “YOURE SUCKING UP ALL THE BANDWIDTH” then storm back out, like once a week.

There is no way the OP got “banned” for using that word?

By the definition of the rating our player created content (names and chat) that we use to interact with others is not rated. Which is why it has to follow the game company policies for social interactions.

Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB

That won’t change anything. The rating only covers what the game devs create, not player interactions. Even Blizzard’s M rated games have the same name/chat player policy.

The ‘legal solution’ is that Blizzard decides what language you can use while playing their game and that’s the end of the story.

They say no profanity, so don’t use it.

You control the buttons you press, so there’s no ‘accidental’ swearing in this game. Just follow the rules and you won’t have any problems.

Right well I’m not an employee of Blizzard nor live in California so such rules don’t apply to me.

The internet must remain the bastion of freedom of speech.

LOL it literally doesn’t matter what you consider it, it only matters what it is, and that’s rated T for Teen.

Sorry I am more qualified than any ratings person.

I sense sarcasm, I hope. I am sure you know that the EULA is a contract and that if you agree to rules, then don’t follow them, they have the right to remove your access to their services.

You are kidding right? I mean, I know it is Sunday, there was a time change, and I might need more coffee.

I promise Blizzard won’t arrest you for speaking out against your Govt or leaders. Seeing as they are not, you know, the Govt. They do control their own private property though, such as the game and forums. Feel free to exercise your free speech rights on public property, or your own property. Subject to whatever the local laws are on demonstrations and protests of course.
