If this were 1885 and I decided to walk through a sanitarium with a shirt that said “Can I have some of your lung butter for my toast?”, I can see why I might end up getting shot by TB patients at the time. It wasn’t funny. It was a slow, miserable way to die (not unlike covid pneumonia).
Sebastian Bach wasn’t being funny when he was photographed wearing a T-shirt that said “AIDS kills fa** dead”. He got dragged across the coals for it and rightly so. AIDS-induced pneumonia is a slow, miserable way to die. Also, not unlike covid pneumonia.
This indifferent, anything-goes-on-the-internet humor isn’t funny either. It seems extremely hard for people to have any type of class other than low.

People aren’t naming their pets or characters in some abstract vacuum. They’re using these names to be edgy and troll.
It’s just as targeted.

The author wants to see these names banned. And though I didn’t state it directly in my original post, I agree with him.
My youngest brother is an EMT, was exposed, is sick, and is now in quarantine.

The other side of the coin is that the name should be allowed because some things shouldn’t be forgotten. Every namesake is a reminder so that people don’t forgot and can mitigate and be better prepared for viruses in future.
The President call the virus, ‘China Virus’. Is he racist? Is it okay to call my Hunter pet, China Virus?
Honestly, I got a Shadowbarb drone the other day. I always match my hunter pets with my mount. So I caught 2x Aqir drone pets for my dual pet set up (Animal Companion). I thought of their names. I thought of naming them a virus name. I named one, Venom and the other one, Toxin. I hope nobody find my pet names disturbing.
I’m going to have to disagree when it comes to ‘banning’ names’ that aren’t already ‘banned’ by the game’s ToS (i.e. overtly racially charged names, slurs, etc.)
If you go down that slippery slope, you end up in a situation like 2003 RuneScape, where in game chat, while already globally censored, became ridiculous. Words like “crud” were censored. I’d rather not have this game turn into an oversensitive/coddling environment like that.

I think a 6 month block on creation of names including pandemic themes would be in good taste. Not forever, but until things have blown over a little.

I don’t think banning variants of covid or corona are going down a slippery slope. It’s two words. It’s not some class of words.
One can conclude that I’m being emotional. Perhaps overly so. That’s because this crisis has hit my family. We almost lost this same brother back in 2002 when he had Burkitt’s lymphoma at age 14. That’s why he chose to become an EMT and volunteer firefighter. I’d wager that he’s done a lot more to help people than the people that are laughing and making jokes about this whole thing.
Someone who has not been affected by this crisis is not going to feel the way I do. So I’ll just say that you’re entitled to your opinion.

So…because a particular phrase being used as a name upsets you personally, it should be banned.
See…that’s what I meant by ‘slippery slope’. There are a LOT of players in this game…and once you start banning phrases that hurt one players’ feelings, look out.

Do you honestly believe it only bothers me? This isn’t some only-me crisis. This is everybody. And if it isn’t you yet, it’s going to be. Or somebody you know. Will you still think it’s ok or funny, then?
The casual indifference. It’s not a crisis till it’s your own.
Isn’t it something that people can’t name their toons or pets “AIDS” or “cancer” or “Hitler”. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. All of these have killed many people and are not funny.
