Megathread: Ogres as Playable Allied race

Has Blizzard said much on the difference between core and allied races? Other than allied races needed to be convinced to join the cause to be playable, of course.

I know that it was stated that allied races wouldn’t be just sub-races, in which the name leaves that open, but as it is right now, each allied race has a core race linked to it in some fashion. Kul’Tirans are the only one, that I am aware of, where new models were made for the playable models.

Seems like unless we start to see allied races that have no links to any of the core races in any way, all we can do is just wonder what the future plans are for the allied race system and even if it will continue past BfA.

Regardless of what happens, I’ll still support the races I want to see playable, of course.

Edit 2: College classes begin for me August 19th, and some opportunities to get a head start for my classes have appeared. While I still intend to plan out this Ogre march event, it’s looking like it’ll be awhile before I can actually get around to doing it. I’ll likely not say anything more on it until I get something more concrete to say about it, and it is annoying to have things get in the way of planning it. Sadly, I have to do what I have to do when it comes to my career. ← <

Edit 3: Interesting developments have lead to Ji Firepaw being the only named NPC in the embassy now, who gives out the allied race unlock quests. Seems like it’s a good thing I’m waiting to do my event as it sounds like I’ll need to add a pitstop to the embassy to my script for my Ogre March event.

Original post with the first edit as follows:

It has been awhile since the last patch came out, so I’m thinking of planning out my “March of the Stonemaul Ogres” player event in the (hopefully) near future.

I still need to write up a script and transfer that to macros. I also need to figure out if CRZ in Orgimmar may be a problem, since I’d hate for anyone during the event to suddenly get put in another instance of Orgimmar…or me getting transported and confusing people in that instance while the people in the previous instance wonder what happened to me. If anyone knows the best way to get anyone who wants to attend the event in the same instance of Orgimmar, as well as stay in said instance, please let me know. I’ll try to research it some more, also.

I’ll likely announce the event inside this megathread, while giving a few days notice. I may aim for a weekend, possibly in the evening, to hopefully give some more flexibility to anyone wanting to attend.

Edit: I just realized that I can just invite people to whatever CRZ version of Orgimmar I am in, so that works that part out. Hopefully people wouldn’t just be moved out of the instance I’m in and such because of CRZ, though. Will need to think on how to avoid that, somehow. ← <

I recall timing a lap on the route I plan to take being roughly 11 minutes, so that would be roughly 22 minutes for two laps and a few more minutes for the brief meeting with the warchief part of it. I estimate roughly a 30 minute event.

It won’t be too involved of an event and as I said before, I’m not expecting a huge amount of people. It is primarily meant as a fun thing that people in the area can join up with while acting as a request of sorts to consider making Ogres playable for the Horde (not a guarantee it would get them playable on its own, of course). I’ll try to take screenshots of the event and put them in an album online somewhere to share, also.

Ogre illusion items are few and far between, and are not a requirement. People are free to march as themselves. I only have the Kovork Kostume toy, which to my knowledge is the only available Ogre illusion item outside of two different ones you could potentially have gotten from the WoW card game. It doesn’t last very long, so I’ll have some Relfecting Prism items and hopefully find someone to help keep the Ogre illusion on my throughout the event. Worst case scenarion, I’ll just say that my “Ogre” character is taking the guise of an Orc so that others are more likely to listen to him. I may also look into some size growing items, such as an Elixir of Giant Growth to make me stand out a bit more. I’ll have to find some and see if it’ll work out.

At any rate, for those that are interested, please keep an eye out here for when I have some concrete details. It might be a little bit longer of a wait, but when I’m sure I’ve figured some things out, I’ll be sure to announce it in here.

Until then, dream big Ogre fans!

I just remembered that there are female Ogre masks in the game that were put in around the time Cataclysm was coming out:

If you can’t tell, the female Ogre mask is on the right while Captain Chin is on the left. :V

If I recall correctly, it was before we knew what the female Worgen looked like. There was also a male and female Naga mask put in with them, which caused a lot of talk and speculation at the time. Apparently since then, they added Vrykul and Murloc masks, male and female of each, too.

Of course, the NPC race masks are stackable and appear to have a buff that is applied when you right click it, though that can always change if any of those races become playable.

Regarding the look of the female Ogre mask, it kinda resembles the male Ogre, albeit a little more feminine…well, debatable, but you know what I mean. Still, it does act as a potential Ogre female design in a sense. I’m unsure whether they would keep to that design or make something else if we happen to get Ogres playable.

Here’s the Wowhead Entry on the female Ogre mask and where to get it in game, along with a few other screenshots of someone wearing the mask. I think it’s sold with the other masks around Hallow’s End.

At any rate, dream big Ogre fans!

Edit: So having posted three times in a row, I can’t post again in this thread until someone replies. In the meantime, I’ll edit this post if I need to add anything to the thread until another reply comes…hopefully sooner than later.

It never truly is ogre, is it?

It’s terrible they haven’t been added yet. Have always loved the thought of playing an ogre mage.

Fully support ops excellent suggestions.

I read on Wowhead that Wrathion goes to Dire Maul to visit the library there. Since he’s in Feralas he could get the Ogre ball rolling.

And I saw that you and others think a two-headed option could possibly impede Ogres but I think a two-headed option needs to be included. If Blizz isn’t going to include a core race because of an extra head then they have lost touch with what WoW is. We’ve waited this long for Ogres so a couple more months/years is nothing if we get them eventually. I’d wait longer if that’s what it took for a two-headed option.

And I’d personally rather have Mok’nathal then Ogres but Ogres have been part of WoW longer from my experience so I could wait for Mok’nathal if Ogres came out first. Plus, if Blizz is looking to cut corners, they could always combine Ogres and Mok’nathal in the character creation screen. Maybe give a slider so that a player can choose how much Ogre their toon has. It couldn’t go lower then 50% though. And maybe as the slider goes higher the Mok’nathal looks more Ogre like until you hit 100% Ogre. Ah, who am I kidding. Blizz can’t even do customizations right.

Ogres as playable core race = :+1:

Dude wtf…

I just noticed something very disturbing about OP’s first pic with the spiral triangle:

From my understanding, the WoW Traveler book series states that Dire Maul is suppose to be entirely empty, which is odd since the point of the Stonemaul Clan being in Feralas was to help the Horde take over Dire Maul. It makes me wonder what the Horde, especially the Stonemaul Clan, has been doing there.

Even if the Horde had control of Dire Maul, I can’t imagine them letting Wrathion in to peruse its library, so likely the storyline I see is that Wrathion decides to go there, it’s totally empty, and he reads in peace. It wouldn’t surprise me if what lore that was going around in Feralas was mostly forgotten.

On the other hand, I’d be a bit worried if he had to attack the nearby Horde settlement to make sure it was empty, especially if it involved the Stonemaul Clan. It would really annoy me to have their story in Feralas end with Wrathion just slaughtering all of them in the area. The only potentially good thing is if that angers the Stonemaul Clan, Dragon Isles are a forthcoming area, and the Stonemaul Clan decide to smash as many dragons as they could in retaliation, leading to an Ogre allied race in the near future.

Edit: I admit I don’t really know Wrathion and the Horde’s relationship, so I’m just speculating here.

I’ll have to keep an eye out to see what happens. I’m guessing Wrathion visiting Dire Maul would be uneventful, but we’ll see.

One of the reasons I lean towards wanting Ogres as a core race is so there would be plenty of time to design them and potentially give a two headed option. While I’d go one head for my Ogre, I’ve seen plenty of people who do want two-heads. It also would lead to an interest marketing-wise if they pull it off, as people would want to know how they did it and check it out.

I’m of the opinion that Ogres as a core race with the Mok’nathol as an allied race would work very well. There is no reason why we couldn’t have both.

15 years of the game is coming up. Let’s hope that it won’t be another 15 or more before we see playable Horde Ogres. <- <

wtf? but they are different though, its upside-down too, but that was weird, even more weird you noticing it haha

they can do anything at this point, there is too many scenarios, there are ogres in Arathi by example that we could recruit instead to kill.

but if an extra head means they can’t happen i rather go without it

the will be too much helm problems that i think are not easy fixed.

They will never do that though, i 100% sure that if moknathal happen ogres will never see the light, they will simple say the half-ogres are enough, that they already fulfill the job, but they don’t in any way

there is, and sorry if i sound rude, literally zero reason or sense to make then playable, lore-wise and by gameplay.

Rexxar model just gave people hype, but he is a half-breed and half-things don’t work as a race, because they are hybrids, their characteristics would change with how much ogre blood is left, Rexxar is just 1/4 ogre

they are a dying and almost extinct clan living in outland far far away, with their own problems, the clan consist of most orcs, ogres AND half-breeds.

Its basically an orc clan, with no difference, there is no unique behavior custom or traditions unlike an ogre tribe/clan who is way more different

They are so few, with their own problem,in a different world, why we would ask then to come? why they would come? when we can get ogres in the courtyard

And about core race, blizzard said there will be just allied system for now on, there is no “core race”

Hah! Hahahaha!
Oh… Wait… You are serious?
Hahahahahahahahaha!

what is funny?

That people actually want to play those big dumb brutes. Then again, the horde already has those in the form of orcs, stoner trolls, and psychopath forsaken. So I guess its kinda expected. Why dont you guys want to play the brutes that the goblins keep as pets too?

people play dumb space cows, i don’t see a problem with people wanting to play an ogre, as iconic it is in rpgs

yeah its a rpg, not a barbie dress contest

Ogres and High Elves: two key parts of the Second War for their respective sides and would both be really neat and complimentary additions to the game in 9.0. Both races have been sidelined in WoW, Ogres because reasons and high elves because they’re been reduced to a small fraction of their former numbers due to the Scourge and Kael’thas leading the majority of the remainder to becoming blood elves. I 100% support having a playable faction of Ogres for the Horde.

The reason I particularly want Ogres is that I really like the idea of being a big, dumb, and strong brute that smashes stuff and drinks ale. It’s a fun character to play as and even RP as on occasion. It’s just a personal preference overall.

Not to mention that Ogres have had a history with the Horde, with some already being part of the current Horde, and while I don’t expect their leader to fly in like Super Man and send the Alliance flying single-handedly by letting out a loud belch, I do want the Horde to remember they exist and use them more.

People have different preferences when it comes to races they want to play as, and Ogres are my most wanted race. If people find it weird, then they find it weird. I’ll always support them to be playable, for better or worse.

Yes, I think Blizzard should have a word with the art guy behind that…

trust lv 3 again, so edited the main post with the pictures missing, as well some new things like beard options, new feedback is welcomed

also found something that show how they could do ogres with kul’tiran as base:

its most likely to be a normal race vs a allied race imo.

I do not want such ugly creatures in my Horde. Kidding. I am usually for more customization options all around. Kul Tirans make Ogers a near possibility.

Heck, if they initially released them as Ogres in the first place, they wold pass with only minor changes.

I liked the OP and I mostly agree… but… can we only have the single headed ones? The two headed ones are a bit freaky for my delicate sensibilities.

If they were to use the Kul’Tiran model as a base of some kind for Ogres, I would hope that they wouldn’t just put an Ogre head on the body and call it a day.

I’d like to have Ogres actually look like Ogres rather than Kul’tirans on the Horde. Seeing them more beefy, like the actual Ogre model in-game, is what I’m looking for. I’d also want the animations to be Ogre like as well and not just recycle Kul’Tiran animations. Using the Kul’Tiran model as a base is fine if they went that route, but I want to see them as Ogres as opposed to an edited Kul’Tiran model, if that makes any sense.

I do also wonder how much more work would need to be done with the current male Ogre model, since they’re capable of riding mounts, have their own dance, and various animations. Obviously, one would need to be made for female Ogres regardless of which path they would go, and I’m sure arguments for using the female Kul’Tiran model as a base for them could be made.

I’d also still hope for an idle butt-scratching animation. Just seems fitting. <- <
