I just want to play Paladin or Druid without being forced to heal

But doing nothing but healing is fine? It’s amazing how far people will twist logic to justify how screwed hybrids were in Vanilla endgame.

If you don’t want to be forced to heal as a Paladin or Druid run with people that are okay with that. In Vanilla players had many more skills available to them, so just by swapping gear they could perform a specific role well enough in most cases.

Complaints over talent swapping costs led to dual talent specialization and then to tree specific specializations that limited what each class could use with their own glyph set. Then it changed more over and current I believe its even worse. so TL: DR - Classes had too much hybrid ability that made balancing for PvP impossible with their push into e-sport territory with arenas. The result they limited what each class could use at a single time claiming ‘Class Identity’ as their excuse of choice.

some people say i’m talking out of my behind but i saw a druid effectively tank patchwerk, idk how it even worked or if i’m missing something but i was hella skeptical when my GM told me that he got a druid for the tank rotations.

I got humbled that day.

Yes it is. In alot of cases adding in proper itemised gear for hybrids wouldn’t make a difference as their toolkit, talents and passives are lacking.

You aren’t wrong, as that’s pretty crappy design (as evidenced by the fact they learned after and never looked back) but you can’t have it adjusted without changing too many other things. Now if it wasn’t for the #NoChanges mob ganging up on everyone suggesting it, we might have gotten them to actually readjust Vanilla and give us a rebalanced, reworked, “Vanilla as it would have been if we knew what we know now” kind of thing, but instead we get what they promised: Vanilla 1.12 with all of its problems.

Really, it seems that your more casual guilds won’t care, your tryhards and wannabe hardcores will tell you to play meta or GTFO. People tend to always say that if you’re a good and reliable player you’ll get brought regardless, despite many more saying that isn’t the case (so which is it?) but I suspect there will be two major camps:

  1. A lot more wannabe hardcore guilds because everything in vanilla is a known quantity (and a lot of people now have years “experience” playing on private servers) so this gives everyone who wants to pretend they are pros the chance to “clear Naxx in a week” and show how leet they are.

  2. Your guilds that don’t care as much and just want to see how Vanilla was, and aren’t going to push meta comps until it actually matters (so AQ or beyond?).

“You think you do, but you don’t”
?

Ah…ok. Definitely an irrefutable truth.

Isnt cloth bis for pally healers? Pallies are last on the loot list for virtually every drop.

they are perfect for soaking hateful strikes. big armor big hp. it doesnt crush or crit so its perfect.

they also do very well on resist fights where the tank would be wearing resist gear and not be def capped .

there are some other fights they are perfect for.

Maybe in vanilla before proper addons. Pallies are 2nd only to priests with modern healing techniques.

Actually it’s very common to see pallies easily top’ing the healing meters these days.

Hold out for Classic TBC. Until then,

Don’t get too excited… paladins are pretty trash healers/tanks in prenerf Outland.

paladin tanks are bad ret paladins dps is bad if you raid it will be as heals but no one says you have to raid.

If you want to be a Paladin or Druid tank, you have to think and spec as a hybrid. Can a paladin tank bosses? Sure, but the rest of the raid will have to work around your hindrances. Can a paladin tank parts of a raid? Absolutely, think suppression room or some of the high-add bosses in AQ40.

At least as a Druid, I expect to play a 0/30/21 spec and to perform different roles per boss. Does this boss have a lot of curses? Yes? HotW Druid is the best spec for decursing with +20% intellect talent. Does this boss need a higher threat ceiling? Yes? Well, guess what! - a Druid is #1 TPS threat in the game with a Manual Crowd Pummeler (think Vael).

Do we not need an extra tank on this boss? Yes? Great, I specced partial cat form and can contribute an extra 5-7% of the boss damage.

Being a hybrid means you won’t be acknowledged as hard as a pure class, but you are the flex MVP and unfortunately that isn’t as measurable over a 4 hour raid. Coming to terms with this and not letting numbers describe your worth is really the first hurdle.

Edit: Also, I realize this response doesn’t really answer the question, but I wanted to point out what playing a Hybrid class means if you want to perform outside the “designated” role determined by Raid Gear Sets.

Vanilla/BC is for people who have fun learning to thrive in a rule set instead of demanding the rules be set for them to thrive.

I started in BC and went priest having no clue about end game, so even though I really wanted to shadow, I mostly spent my time as holy.

I think learning to work within set of rules makes the game more real because thats how life works. No rational person expects life to bend to their wants, and having the game that way makes it more fun.

Here’s how you fix this. Play what you want. If you don’t get invited to raids, oh well. Find someone who will.

Like you running out of mana in 30 seconds. The scholo tanking gear is literally the BiS for paladin tanks because it has defense and MP5 but it was still even afterall The Ravenian farming you did for a chance of him spawning and a CHANCE of him dropping the gear. Warriors would be leagues ahead of you and youd still be crap.

I had all the gear and by that time we pretty much had MC on maybe half/ 3/4 farm status. So gear was being distributing accordingly. The old raid leader said If I could manage aggro on 1 core hound pack I’d be allowed to secondary tank if needed. The only tool a paladin has is ticks on a consecrate and a aura and you have to cycle through each one. It was a horrible failed mess and I went back to healing.

Long story short paladins cant tank. But thats just the tanking aspect. They can DPS if you’re sleeping with the GM or Raid Leader but other than that they’re absolute crap. Private servers did their justice to balance but Classic won’t be doing that.

Druids I dont know but I know they tried just like me and they got the same treatment. And in the long run, went back to healing.

Also if it’s 1.12 patch, Judgement should be Damage AND healing. Not just damage anymore.

If you’re lucky, you’ll get into a guild that will let you heal as 20/31/0 for that sweeeeet Blessing of Sanctuary. My guild is doing this btw.
