As a tech assist to either you or others (I’m guessing you already know most of what I’m about to say Perl, but I’ll walk others through it as well)
Is it a modem you’re after or a router? The terms tend to be used interoperably these days. Technically, one’s a bridge and the other isn’t. Remember the old modems that did bleep bloop noises when logging on and stuff, that’s a modem. It connects two different network types. That kinda things is still used these days in cable TV provided internet and other setups. Can’t recommend modems, as (a) I don’t use them (b) they tend to be ‘locked’ and the performance of the networking internals can’t be tuned.
Routers, however, tend to be far more capable of being tuned. And what’s more there are Open Source projects that replace the firmware on some routers and provide a much more useful user experience for those with a smidgen of tech knowledge or want to learn. In this regard, I recommend anything that has support under the OpenWRT project. Personally, I stick to TP-Link. Their Archer C7 (aka AC1750) has been the backbone of my home network for some time. I’ve got other things behind it, but it provides good throughput and two USB ports with enough current so that you can attach 4G dongles and the like to provide ‘multi-wan’ so that when the upstream ISP goes offline, you can use your phone to limp your home network along with. Lots of other nifty tools as well under OpenWRT.
My 2c.
Whatever you decide I highly recommend a WiFi Repeater to add to your system; It not only boosts my signal strength so that my WiFi range is tripled but also my speed has jumped up 2X what it was and it’s simple to install and cheap, I myself use the brand “WifiBlast” which is good quality and reliable; There are others on the market that are cheaper but I can’t speak for them.
Well, for my router I went with a TP-Link AC3200. I’m matching that to a TP-Link TC7650 router.
The modem I’m on now is an all-in-one, modem and router by Cisco but I’ve just not been happy with it. It’s been reliable for the most part, but the interface is cumbersome and dated. I’m looking for something a little newer and more user-friendly
I was using an older router as a repeater, but my WiFi was being bogged-down by my security cameras as they’re reliant on WiFi. I love them, but oh man can they be a pain too. Having a separate wifi network for them has been good and has helped to stabilize the rest of the network too.
This new setup should provide a little more stability too. I never really liked having a modem and router mashed together. Probably because I’m a little more old-school, but I’ll be happy with this new setup too
I’ve been fiddling with Ubiquiti Unifi stuff recently. Mostly™ fun.
Everybody’s needs are different, but my current network:
Modem -Alcatel-Lucent G-010G-A Optical Network Terminal
Wi-Fi - NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band WiFi Router
Switch - Cisco SG300-10 10-port Gigabit Managed Switch (2 each one upstairs one down, with a fiber connection between).
I’m old-fashioned and most stuff is hardwired, but one laptop, the phones, and guests need Wi-Fi.
The Cisco switches have been working without any issues for almost six years now.
EDIT:
My security is on the cheep side, Blink cameras that link via a phone app.
Same here, I strictly believe in hardwired for personal use plus the connections are steady; WiFi is for guests and phone apps my wife uses to conversate via video with her relatives in China.
My security runs on a totally separate account system.
I’m tied of looking at Dunkelgrau, need some green in my life.
My poor daughter was up sick in the night She’s fighting something off, but the fever upset her stomach. So she’s staying home today for some extra snuggle-time with daddy It’s a great excuse for us to sit on the couch and watch movies all day too!
Sadly, the all-in-one modem/router that has no working LAN ports is also a Cisco. And while I’ve had very little trouble with it, the interface for it was like something out of the late 80’s!
I’m planning this summer to augment my security a little. Currently I’m running a Nest IQ cam and a Nest Doorbell cam (both of which I love, especially the doorbell cam!) but they’re 100% streamed content with no local storage. I plan on adding a couple of additional cameras with local storage for when the web goes down and to cover more of the property.
This is too rich…
Avengers: Endgame was released in China a day ago to combat movie piracy.
Guess what? A crappy screener of the Chinese release has hit the torrent networks.
They apparently caught the guy who made the cam, he was a local theater employee. From reports, the cam is horrible and spammed with online gambling ads.
I retired in early 2011, someone with newer information might have a newer perspective, however; during the 90s Cisco transformed itself from a high tech manufacturer of networking equipment to a holding company for several high tech manufacturers of networking equipment.
Equipment manufactured under the Cisco name made by the original Cisco and equipment manufactured under the Cisco name by Linksys, to give one example, may not be easily compared (see how I can still use corporate don’t sue me weasel words).
I use the router for WiFi and don’t plug anything into it and use a better-quality switch for everything else. The management interface for the switch is, however, admittedly less user friendly than it could be.
I have always heard good things about the Nest products.
So had to do a project today at work since I was off Tuesday.
Wasn’t even worth the gas back and forth lol. But it is done. Looks a ton better too. People don’t respect the work it takes to have an organized side stock room.
Hope and pray that she gets better soon!
I couldn’t believe the amount of websites in China that offer these movies that are in the theatres here in the USA and abroad for free to view there; The websites were abundant and you could tell they had been filmed by someone in a theatre (And also in an English speaking country because of the Chinese caption) due to people getting up to use the bathroom and would show up blocking a portion of the screen.
I went to see a movie there in a theatre with my wife that I had already seen here so I already knew the story line but the language spoken in the movie was in Chinese Mandarin.
I did read a news article a few months ago that China was going after the websites but nothing since I read that.
I would love to see Endgame but apparently my theater is like… Pretty much all sold out
I like to go to the theatre here in the afternoons as they’re usually not many people that go before 4 pm.
I don’t really have plans to see it. I still haven’t seen the first one. BUT on the 16th of May, they are showing Saga of Tanya the Evil Movie on Fathom, and then there is Godzilla, King of the Monsters on the 31st.
We have tickets for next Tuesday afternoon. That’s the first available spot!
I feel off today. I have to work for the evening cook tomorrow so won’t be able to go shopping. So I just did it now.
Feels weirdan. Feels weird
Two paychecks in a row with 20 hours of OT. Just not feeling it.
Don’t know when I’ll be able to see Endgame. Work schedule is likely to change soon.
I hate crowds with a burning passion. Avoiding them is one of the better perks of working nights and having my weekend in the middle of the work week.
