The thing is, layering isn’t meant to accomodate or cater to tourists.
It’s meant to accomodate and cater to those of us who are sticking around in a fashion that keeps Blizzard from wasting money on new realm blades only to end up chucking them out after the tourists are gone.
Subs started to decline around the time that cross realm dungeon finder was introduced. I’m pretty sure that was closer to 2010 during WotLK
Well, that’s who it’s accommodating. If your mind is set on playing for months, are 1 hour queues for a few days really going to drive you away? Of course not - but if you’re just there to check the game out, then queues certainly would. Layering lets those people have their quick fun
Layering won’t even solve queues. It sure as hell didn’t during the stress tests I’ve been part of.
No, it’s entirely about realm population after the tourists leave. Unless you want dead realms and server merges, which are cancers unto themselves, we’re stuck with layering for a limited time.
Oh, and for the record? NOBODY truly wants layering. In a perfect world there’d be no tourist threat and we could enjoy the lean realm lists at launch without having to worry about anything.
I’ve played on several servers over the years. Being a low-pop server sucks - there’s nobody to trade with and nobody to raid with. Not having to compete with anyone for world content used to be a plus, but CRZ ended that. Being on a dead server is all bad with no upside.
Even if it’s a change, I’d rather have layering and always be on a reasonably well-populated server. Especially in the beginning when we don’t know what the mega-servers will end up being. Ideally we won’t need them.
Many people feel very strongly about layering, In theory it is different from sharting, but in practice I have yet to see a discernible difference. Seems like they basically renamed layeering to sharding to “pretend” to be listening, without really changing anything.
and that’s precisely why layering is more likely to leave you stranded on a dead server. better hope you picked the mega server. the mega server with a mega queue, that you’ll wait in because the alternative is the dead servers.
and y’know who’s most likely to not wait in the queue to play on the realms everybody else is playing on? the tourists who quit after a week. so you might think your realm isn’t dead because there’s still a few hundred people on it, but 99.5% of them are about to quit anyway.
