Bad eyesight - any way to make text bigger?

I have very bad eyesight. I tried lowering the resolution of the display as much as I could, and the text is still barely big enough for me to read it (on fullscreen too). Also with the low resolution now the labels above NPCs and PCs is awful until I get very close. I’ve checked through the settings but could not find a way to make just the text bigger. Is there a way?

Increasing just the size of the text, I’m not sure if there’s an option available for that, just the UI Scaling under advanced options.

There’s an addon called Leatrix Plus that might be exactly what you’re looking for, though.

If you’re talking about the text size in the default chat window, there is a way to change it.

Right click on the tab that says “general” there should be an option “font size” … in there were several different sizes.

Do not know if that will change the text size on the quest menus or elsewhere however.

For the chat window you can right click the chat window tab and there’s an option to increase font sizes.

For the rest of the UI there’s an addon called Phanx Font that allows you to select a different font for your entire UI, as well as scaling options. This includes your quest log, objectives window, chat window, names over peoples head, etc… and some of the fonts are nice and thick which makes them super easy to see, and doesn’t mess with the resolution so the text stays nice and clear.

(It’s also very easy to configure; you select a font from the drop down menu, adjust the scale with the slider until you’re satisfied, and click apply.)

What about options for Classic?

I have not read the responses, but my eyes are getting worse as I age. I have actually had to change chat colors to make the chat more easily read.

If you right click the chat window of choice, and it has to be done on each window, there should be a font size. 18 is the largest. It really helps me as I have the UI scale turned pretty much all the way down. It makes it easier to see behind you.

I hope this is what you were talking about and I have a feeling it has already been addressed. However, in case it wasn’t, there you go.

I got the impression he was talking about the text in the rest of the game. I’m specifically hoping for some way to improve the text (name, guild) over heads of players and NPCs.

Duh…

LOL I had to make that joke, sorry

I only answered what I knew about.

NPC names are so freaking small it’s ridiculous.

Sorry for the delayed response here… I don’t think the addon I mentioned (Phanx Font) would help specifically with just NPC names. I’m not sure if any addon that adjusts that.

I’ll be logging into the game shortly, and I have a couple of ideas that I’d like to try out before I suggest them, but I will edit this post once I do. I’ll poke around for a few don’t addons or ways to change it as well.

Edit
Ok so I played around with the UI scale slider, and that only adjusts your actual UI elements, and not things like NPC/player names.

There are a couple of addon options for you, though. You can use a nameplate addon, like Threat Plates or KUI (I personally use KUI so I can only confirm settings for that addon, but most others will offer very similar personalization). Some things you do with KUI are use name-only mode for friendly NPC’s and adjust the text size.

Another option is to use ElvUI. You can use the general settings > media tab to adjust most of the game fonts, however, there’s no option that I can see to adjust the size of the NPC names. The font size slider applies to pretty much everything BUT NPC names. There are several font options, though, and one may make the names easier to read overall, despite the small size. I downloaded it and tested it just now to verify for myself. ElvUI is a very in depth addon, and many dislike using it, but if it’s something you’re interested in trying out, you can go into the configuration and disable every skin Elvui uses over Blizzards, which will essentially make your UI look like the default, while having the perks of ElvUI in the background.

Either way, it doesn’t appear there’s an easy way to adjust the NPC/player names directly. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

Try Threat Plates for Classic.

I use ElvUI and I love their nameplate options. Unfortunately, nameplates only work out 20m in Classic, meaning I have to be close already. =(

Yes! That does make it tricky, 100% agree. I find the names difficult to read myself, so I have been searching around for alternatives for myself with no luck.

I’d submit this as feedback through the Accessibility channels.

For reading quest text, get Immersion.

Thank you, everyone! This has been very helpful and I’m able to see the text enough to play.

I know this is a somewhat old thread, but since I found it, I figure others might stumble across it as well.

I am visually impaired and have substantially customized my UI in WoW.

Note: Thank you Blizzard and all the addon developers! You have made it possible for me to play and enjoy this game like no other game I have ever found.

I use a number of addons that all together allow me to play the game. Key among these is ClearFont. I cannot find this addon on any repo. I got it when playing vanila wow, not classic. I have had to edit the lua file a couple times to update the game version number. It ahs a value in one of the lua files for font scale. I set it to 1.9. Text is rather cramped in a lot of windows and is cut off for others, but it really helps overall. I also use addon control panel, so that I can turn ClearFont (or any other addon) off/on without restarting the game, which is quite helpful.

Also, I use Windows Magnifier often just to zoom into a particular part of the game. this works since I run the game in Full Screen Windowed mode. I am not sure if ZoomText will work. I am afraid to try it as ZoomText tends to crash all sorts of things.

If you want a copy of ClearFont, let me know. Also, here’s a screenshot of my UI (not sure how long imgur keeps the link active):

I would be happy to talk to anyone who needs to customize their UI to such extremes. I imagine we could learn a lot from each other.

Excellent suggestion. It works. I have a 21" screen but I keep it about 2 feet away because I use my computer desk for writing. Doing a right click on the general tab does allow changing font size. So great. Thank you.

Two things you can do that come to mind:

  1. For the chat window, there is an option in it (not buried in the menus after hitting ESC) to change the font size per chat tab.

  2. For the main window that pops up for quests, I randomly noticed last week that when my mouse was over it and I did the ‘zoom out’ touch command on my laptop’s touch pad, that it zoomed in the text to a larger font size.

I hope this helps you enjoy the game more. My eyes are getting weaker as well, so I understand.

As someone who is visually impaired and their eyesight is progressively getting worse, I salute you for telling us about this addon! I play on a 32-inch tv monitor and half the time I have to have my zoom feature on. Granted I can’t play WoW that way so I have my monitor up to my nose. Now I am able to sit back and read text and see the minimap without an issue. Thank you kind sir!
