[A & H] Sword(s) and Rose(s) Tavern -- Behind the Bar

Tucked away behind the bar counters of the local SnR Taverns is a board on which are posted various notices and papers. Upon them you can find some of the latest rumors and gossip floating around towns and inns throughout the world and beyond. While some of the notices seem more timely than others, the papering of the years has made these boards a local curiosity and a place to gather. Those who have been to the taverns tell of two of the tavernkeepers who tend to be the collectors and purveyors of gossip, odd jobs, local wisdom, and odd rumors. Cerril Silverleaf keeps the conversation lively over in Alliance territories and Vinceer Silverthorne is known to keep a secret or two hidden under his hat in the realms of the Horde. If you ever get a chance to talk to either of them, you might well find it worth your while.

To the left of these boards is a plaque centered squarely and prominently for all the taverns’ patrons to see.

OOC:

What Is this?

This is our attempt at adding some fun and interesting role-play to the Moon Guard community. Each week, starting around the weekend or Mondays, Cerril or Vinceer (or maybe both!) will be posting up some of the latest news or gossip heard around town. In order to do this, we’ve created a gmail account where you can send your latest news, rumors, or gossip. We’ll be accepting these e-mails up until Fridays for the following week and will post sometime that weekend or Monday.

For instance, for the week beginning Monday, March 15th, we’ll be looking at e-mails up until this Friday, March 12th. So if you have a timely announcement, be sure to get it in the week beforehand!

Likewise, during our server events, either Cerril or Vinceer will be around to chat with you and collect some of the local gossip, as well.

What Are Those Sponsor Plaques?

For anyone who donates items for our tavern events, we wanted to offer a way to thank them for having done so. These plaques are a reflection of those who are helping to create our events for the community!

So what do we accept? Anything from food to drinks to items to oddities. The oddities and items we’ll raffle off on a future date, and the food and drink items we’ll use to supply our specialty dishes for the nights when we’re staffing the tavern.

But where do I send stuff?

We’ve got two lovely characters to whom you can send your donations. For the Alliance side of our tavern, we have Gnymsy the Gnumbers Gnome (in-game: Gnymsy.) And for our Horde tavern, Jelirra our Hoarding Vulpera (in-game: Jelirra) will be happy to receive your items. When sending your items, please include in the message the name you want posted to our plaques. If the name is offensive or fails to abide by the RP Server Naming Guidelines, we reserve the right not to include it.

How Can I Get My Stuff Posted in Behind the Bar (BtB):

We’d prefer that you not make postings to this thread with your own rumors and gossip, but ask that you instead use our gmail address. Anyone is welcome to post up For Sale, Business, Event, or Looking For posts here as they like.

Mostly, this post is meant to help provide a central place to look up people to talk to for current on-going stories, or for fun tidbits about your favorite (or not so favorite) Moon Guardians. What this isn’t a place for is slandering other players, guilds, or being demeaning and outright hateful to your fellow gamers. We reserve the right to not post information from your e-mails that we believe would harm the community or negatively effect it in some way. That said, we’re happy to offer this space for people who want to create a server-wide sense of story and community.

If this hasn’t completely scared you off, and if you’re still interested in being featured in a weekly posting by a fellow community member, then please feel free to send us an e-mail at the following address:

behindthebar13 @ gmail.com (please remove the spaces)

In your e-mail, please include the following:

  • Horde, Alliance, or Neutral
  • IC name of person offering the gossip or rumor.
  • Whether the person or group being gossiped or rumored about has been contacted about this e-mail. (If they have, have they consented to it?)
  • The Rumor or Gossip itself.
  • An IC contact for people to go to for more information regarding said information.

You can also use this e-mail to offer tidbits about server-wide stories and events whose details might have gotten missed in all the larger events–or to leave clues for your guild members (and others) to find and/or play off of. It’s also a great way to introduce a story to the server if you’re interested in creating one outside of a guild.

Questions, Concerns, Other Thoughts?

To reach us, you can leave an e-mail at our above gmail account, or you can poke Cerril/Vinceer with an in-game mail or pester him via his battletag: Cyril#1635 Or he might even respond if you poke him on Discord: Cerril#7028

Cerril reaches down and picks up the top third of the stack in front of him. He flips through the stack of papers, pulling one seemingly at random out of the middle of the sheaf.

“Arrest reports for Stormwind? Well, none of that up here in the Fjord.”

He tosses that paper aside and, after a moment’s consideration, rifles through the stack and removes another dozen sheets that end up on a scrap pile.

Returning from the bar, Cerril again picks up his stack of reports from across the land. A mention of cathedral services gives him a twinge of regret for his impiety of late, but one that passes as quickly as a stiff gust from the entryway. Events travel southward from there, further still from the tavern, until one in particular piques his interest. He pulls a notice out of the sheaf, trims it down, and adds it to a much smaller pile to be pinned to the notice board.

Gossip

Anyone who spends enough time near the bar in the Sword and Rose will hear speculation as to the coin required to set up a tavern on the edge of civilization. Who is the mysterious patron behind the Sword and Rose? Are there ulterior motives at play?

Cerril, himself no stranger to secrets and societies, brushes off such concerns with a practiced gesture and pivot to more immediate concerns, such as the special of the day (fish stew) and a perfectly poured stout pairing.

Nearly identical advertisements are pinned to the boards in both taverns.

The Worlds Faire Carnival will be held in Ramkahen and Maraat, Uldum from Sunday the 14th through next Saturday the 20th. Come one, come all!

Cerril looks a little the worse for wear tonight at the bar. As he has been telling anyone who gets within earshot, Stormwind is brighter, louder, and more crowded than ever.

The Stormwind Job Fair had taken place earlier today and he and Channyn had managed a booth complete with food tables, gifts, and fireworks. The turnout was much higher than he had expected although Lady Rose had managed the whole affair with enviable expertise.

From the other end of Azeroth, the World’s Faire Carnival concluded this week in Ramkahen. Attendees had only trickled into the Sword & Rose but the consensus was that it was exhausting and loads of fun.

Gossip

In between complaints about a sunburn and portal headaches, and long pulls off something very dark out of a heavy mug, Cerril will discuss rumors and hearsay.

The bar is tapping some kegs by a new brewer, a local to Northrend who has found some techniques that are suited to the icy climes. These ‘ice beers’ are stronger than most patrons are used to drinking and have yet to find a dedicated fan base amongst the patrons of the Sword & Rose. The next shipment, Cerril alludes, will have strong spices to accompany a new menu being developed in back.

In the same spirit, Channyn has been taste testing a new development from the kitchen. Fried cheese dumplings served on a rice crisp left the testers anything but flat. The recipe is adapted from a Timeless Isle delicacy to use local ingredients. The Vrykul ale and spirits that are popular at the tavern match well with some of the stronger cheeses selected for this batch, in place of the very delicate varieties on the temperate island.

Channyn sheepishly looks out from the kitchen, wondering what her husband is up to. With the inaugural opening of the tavern this Wednesday, she’s been busy doing some spring cleaning while ensuring everything has been made ready for their debut.

Spying him at the bar, she smiles a little, the light in her eyes touched with loving warmth. He was a solid foundation for her when everything else had been lost, and now that they were out here in the Fjord, on the edge of the world and far from the center of things, she was grateful that he was here with her.

Maybe this time they’d settle down for a while; maybe…

Sighing, she turned back to her work in the kitchen. The food wasn’t going to sort itself, and the recent correspondence from her suppliers indicated she was going to have to order soon if she wanted to be ready for the Booty Bay event in April.

Cerril has been busy this last week trying to manage an influx of supplies. He has hinted, loudly and in earshot, that some dinners on the house would be available for anyone willing to help out escorting exceptionally drunk patrons out of the bar and to a nearby inn. This has, naturally, led to speculation that the enterprising mage, or his mysterious patron, has an arrangement with the inn in question.

He takes a moment to roll his eyes good-naturedly and wave to Channyn from his position by the bar. She has, as he will tell anyone who asks the right [or wrong] questions, been responsible for an influx of new suppliers which he then has had to find a way to make palatable for the customers

New delicacies from the Sword & Rose kitchen! It turns out that the fried cheese dumplings don’t use nearly as much cheese as the procurement team had expected, and so a selection of new items has been making its way across the specials board above the bar.

Menu of the week

Cheese board with a variety of cheeses both local and from the shops of Stormwind, with fruits and berries and a wedge of hearty bread. A sampler of the varieties available in other dishes from the kitchen.

“Hunter’s Pie” featuring cubes of cured meat from local hunters, with vegetables of the region and cheese served under a layer of browned, sliced potatoes in an herbed cheese sauce.

Berry cheese tart with a strong and flavorful crust encasing a sweet and sour lemon-berry mix.

Of course, what is a bar without drinks? Cerril will sidle up to newcomers and returning patrons alike to suggest a pairing.

Dwarven Coffee – warming spices and a sweetened buttery mixture mixed into a strong coffee with a healthy pour of local whiskey. Perfect to start your night while you shake off a layer of frost from the trip, or to end your night. Paired with: Berry cheese tarts

Wintergreen Ice – Riley Wintergeen, the brewer/distiller who has some sort of partnership with the Sword & Rose, has provided this freeze-distilled liquor which has become something of a stealth favorite in the bar, mostly ordered in shorts on a dare or competition, or to add a kick to other drinks.

Dwarven Stout – Traditional stout ale from Ironforge, a welcome change to the spirits and strong beer most common in Northrend. Strong enough to stand up to the spices and flavors of a year-round winter menu, but you can still drink a few pints and remember the food and company of the night. Paired with: Hunter’s Pie

Taste Tested recipe for Dwarven Coffee:
2oz batter, 2oz unpeated whiskey, 8oz strong coffee. Stir thoroughly and serve

Prepare batter by mixing 1lb brown sugar, 1lb butter, 1qt vanilla ice cream. 1tbsp cinnamon, 1tsp clove, 1tsp nutmeg. Freeze for later – makes enough drinks to last through the cold season

Spring in Northrend doesn’t bring quite the same relief from cold as in the warmer southern climate, but the days are longer than the nights and most inhabitants of the frozen north find whatever cause for cheer and celebration they can.

Patrons are happy for the reprieve from cheese plates, cheese boards, cheese sandwiches, and other cheddared dishes. There has begun to be some speculation about the roast gently rotating on a spit above the hearth. Has it always been there? Has anyone ever ordered it? Why is there never mention of a roast meat on the menu board?

Following a whirlwind of cleaning after the Grand Re-Opening, a trove of jarred veggies was discovered in the cellar. Not one to let an opportunity go to waste, Cerril has been finding ways to slip pickled veggies on to the patron’s plates. A ‘pickle back’ shot of brine and Wintergreen Clear has become ‘popular’ with patrons to settle debts and bets.

Last week was the grand re-opening party for the Sword & Rose! Thank you to everyone who attended!

The Swords and Roses taverns will be at the Conquest After Party next Sunday the 11th in Booty Bay. Come say hi to Channyn (A) or Vinceer (H)!

The Tropic Sunder Conquest Campaign itself is to be held all week leading up to the party. If you’re attending, bring your stories to the party!

Menu

In honor of the tavern’s reopening party, the menu this week has some classics, in the form of one of our favorite dishes and excavated ingredients.

Lobster Stew with locally caught lobster, creamy and rich with fresh chunks of lobster.

Pickle Plate – Picked Veggies from the cellars, some of these predate the acquisition of the Sword and Rose and possibly the Alliance expedition to the north! Taste the mystery!

This week’s drinking suggestion is a whiskey flight with three levels of smoke

Badlands Bourbon – Sweet, blended whiskey, no age statement. This is the most popular of the blends, and pairs well with most of the dishes on the S&R menu.

Halaani Whiskey – The shipment from Nagrand finally arrived. This batch is made using peat from the Zangarmarsh, giving it a characteristic briny smoke finish that just begs for a pickle.

Dark Iron Whiskey from Blackrock – Smoked whiskey that gets its special character from the closeness to the Dark Iron forges, and medium-char wood barrels. Perfect with a cigar on the balcony.

Next week: Spring Vegetables from Pandaria!
