I want some clarification on this:
I thought the ranking system went by the number of honorable kills you had? Are you saying that it is based off of how many honorable kills you had in comparison to everyone else?

Your faux intellectualism bores me.
Refute this fact:

You said that only 1 person can get Rank 14 at a time. Do you stand by that?
Yes - it is your honor performance as compared to everyone else on your realm/faction.
You said that only 1 person can get Rank 14 at a time. Do you stand by that?
I never said any such thing. Maybe you need a break and a snickers?
It went on how much honor one accumulated compared to everyone else, whether that was through kills, bg wins, etc.
You all write like you have never seen how a competitive points system works in MMORPG PvP. The top (small elite) guilds will have characters in both realms to cheat to max points each week. You have no chance if you are not part of that. All this talk is unnecessary.
Does that mean you can be bumped out of your rank for lack of participation?
And furthermore, does that mean it would be possible for someone to take Grand Marshal day 1?
No they aren’t. AQ40 gear is BiS for virtually everyone up to that point including specs like Feral Druid.
There are no R14 pieces for a Warrior for example that are BiS over AQ40 pieces.
Even if you’re right, 1.12 honor pieces are still in “curbstomp people in MC/BWL gear” territory.
I was the one who said 1 person could get 13000 rank points in a week.
I said that because its true.
you are the one who keeps linking the honor system and then says it works differently than it does. I have read the whole thing and understand it.
you do not understand it.
Does that mean you can be bumped out of your rank for lack of participation?
Yes. If you don’t PVP or just do a light week compared to everyone else you will drop in rank.
And furthermore, does that mean it would be possible for someone to take Grand Marshal day 1?
No, because even if a player was #1 on the server there was a maximum of how much they could progress per week. It was possible to skip some of the lower ranks, but once one got to a certain point it would take multiple weeks to move up a rank.
See Kelzar’s explanation above.

It was true - before they changed it by 1.12. That’s sort of the point of all of this. The gear is overtuned and the system is nerfed. They did this to help PvP’rs compete with Naxxramas raiders. However, Naxxramas won’t be available. Only BWL will be. Then ZG. Then finally AQ where only C’thun’s loot can hold a candle in PvP.
So for me to even stand a chance, I would have to non-stop PvP all the time. All the while competing against players who get paid to play video games, or are rich kids who don’t have to work?

That might be slightly hyperbolic. You’ll stand a chance, but you will be at a much greater disadvantage than you would have been in real vanilla. A raid logger collecting epics from MC was on fairly equal footing to someone who was grinding honor all day. Certainly, PvP’rs complained about it all time - myself included. But then again, it was the only thing that made raiding interesting. A sweet drop in MC/BWL means way more if it’s the best there is.
Before I delve into this, I’d like to start by saying that I assume the average length of a given phase for classic will most likely be three or four months. I can’t imagine they would hold Dire Maul off limits much longer than that, and the amount of time between Dire Maul and Blackwing Lair’s release wasn’t terribly long either.
As a point of reference, if they use the content patches as per the original time periods in Vanilla:
Content Patch | Days | Content |
---|---|---|
Content Patch 1 | 120 days (15.83%) | Launch and Marudon |
Content Patch 2 | 122 days (16.09%) | Dire Maul and PVP Honor System |
Content Patch 3 | 84 days (11.08%) | Battle Grounds and Blackwing Lair |
Content Patch 4 | 90 days (11.87%) | Zul’Gurub, Green Dragons and Silithus |
Content Patch 5 | 169 days (22.29%) | Ahn’Qiraj |
Content Patch 6 | 252 days (33.24%) | Naxxramas and Cross Realm Battlegrounds |

Perdition’s blade
Hand of Rag
Bonereaver’s Edge
Skullforge Reaver
ToEP
Are all from MC loot… and on par (or outright exceed in ToEP’s case) anything from the pvp grind.
BWL will be cleared on the first week by anyone who knows what they’re doing and has sufficient onyxia cloaks. The weapons of Nefarion are outright better than the pvp grind… Quit spreading this nonsense that people need to wait until AQ40 to even match the PvP gear… by AQ40 the PvP gear is already almost entirely obsolete.
So for me to even stand a chance, I would have to non-stop PvP all the time. All the while competing against players who get paid to play video games, or are rich kids who don’t have to work?
Well what exactly do you expect. Rank14 is very rarified air. It requires an extraordinary amount of time and dedication to see the grind to the end. That was the beauty of it. It was extreme but everyone knew it and understood it. Its like climbing Everest - not many will ever achieve the summit, for myriad of reasons.
In Vanilla, raiding is likewise taxing - 40 man raids are very, very difficult to organize and manage.
The game evolved away from it original style till we have what retail is today - anyone, with minimal effort, can have all the best stuff. Consequently the stuff isn’t particularly desirable. People end up doing things like xmog or pet battles to stay amused.
Chose your poison - Classic and Retail are two very different games.

That’s not really the concern I am having. The concern that I am having is that I would have to endlessly grind forever to become and stay a Grand Marshal. If I take a vacation for a week, I risk losing my title forever.

Man, just hop back on and grind it back up! It’s not as bad as these folks are saying.
You’re gonna do fine
You misunderstood something said earlier. I don’t believe you will lose rank. Early on in the honor system, yes, you would have to maintain your level to keep the title and use the gear you earned. They changed that little rule very early on. Your rank title and gear remain. However, if you are trying to climb the ladder to higher rank, yes you will fall back rather quickly should you try to take a week or two off.
