SC2 News Update - No More Commanders

I doubt that the developers consider this a problem.

You know… There is a good news (?) and bad news.

Good News

  • Blizzard have 30th Anniversary in 2021 Februrary 08 (so 4 months from now). Probably they would add some content by then.

Bad News

  • It’s 4 months from now
  • It is improbable that they will add anything to SC2 Co-op in 30th Anniversary, so more likely co-op won’t get any content.

And to think, I just finished the 3 campaigns for the first time last week. Leveled up my first Zerg CO 2 days ago. Well, as long as the servers are up. (And not even started on the Nova campaign.)

Btw, wrt:

What this means is that we’re not going to be producing additional for-purchase content, such as Commanders and War Chests, but we will continue doing season rolls and necessary balance fixes moving forward.

Co-op missions aren’t paid content so there’s some hope we could have more of that coming. If we get nothing by Christmas, then I think we can give up on that chance, too.

Weekly mutations will likely continue as well. Maybe even new mutators (also not paid content).

And perhaps as a “good bye”, a free commander at the end? It’s not for-purchase if it’s free

Change it back to Impossible, pls don’t give us false hope :frowning:

It is just a game, so why is it so sad?

Don’t you guys have phones?

Because you think you do, but you don’t.

(They could at least fix the damn forum avatar bug)

You mean you don’t want the smug esports guy? Crazy.

I’m using mine cause it displays right, I’d rather still be glowy eyes Raynor right now…

I mean just as long as a game has replayablity and people will continue to play a game it’ll go on. Like L4D2 and starcraft brood war.

We just probably won’t get any new commanders ever then for the foreseeable future, but at least we got prestieges. RIP if that’s why they’re so ridicolously grindy though, in hopes of keeping people busy over the next few years.

I still kinda wish messing around with the play style a bit or free added content ideas like new maps or fourth/additional prestiges.

But 2020 Activision blizz hasn’t given me good hopes. Sc2 got some pretty good treatment, but games like Wow which i loved hard in WOTLK really seemed to suffer hard from the investors “Time played” content doing 40 hours of needless boring chores with a empty world with no grind to do vs WoTLk where you could have nothing to do and not even notice but spend hours sucked into the game dungeoneering, raiding, grinding and crafting endless BoEs, Kirin Tor Rings, Argent Tournament pets and dailies and conquesting Wintergrasp for actually valuable resources and elemental motes where even the pvers wanted to pvp for access to the best nodes. The concept there was “If we lose 100,000$ of subs, we’ll just cut 200,000$ of content development and still profit”. I don’t know if sc2 is going the same path, but while i do feel it’s good at least we got the prestiege and the gameplay is a good point with lots of play variety, no new commanders to look forward or synergies kinda concerns me.

I just feel like although Sc2 has been treated better as a game, if there’s no further commanders past the other 18, will there continue to be support or changes for the game mode? Etc, if commanders and paid content are over, will that also seal new maps and development? Or will it shift to adding the playstyles they previously wanted onto existing commanders, potentially even looking into adding unused units into coop like Spectres who were waiting for a Tosh debut? Is the game going to continue still have unpaid content? I mean it’d be pretty unicorn to suddenly start getting a bunch of f2p maps and commanders and gameplay revamps but i don’t think that’s happening.

I still think people will play coop, but one of the appeals of coming back in every few years was to see what they added into the mode or new commanders. I really also kinda wanted a Gabriel Tosh Guerilla fighter/Assault hero to enter the game with a hit and run spectre/merc army. Maybe a Niadra or Overmind infestor commander who could collect biomass from both enemy and ally but instead of abathur use it to assimilate and create her zerglings and swarm. And then maybe a protoss commander like Tassadar or a Dark archon Urejaz commmander with powerful spellcasters and explosive mind control with powerful ramped up abilities, but shortend lifespan trade offs or a skytoss/Golden Armada Selendis could be fun. RIP

Well. I suppose now the game does have a lot more playstyles, but with no new commanders… What direction will SC2 go? will it be orphaned and only kept alive for one last 10th anniversary update, or will it be kept on a skeleton crew? Will there continue to be updates or f2p updates, (albeit less frequently), are they tossing the towel in and calling it a day, or saying that 18 commanders to pick x 3 prestieges will be enough? Will prestieges or other lightweight forms of adding content be considered, etc. Could adding units that never made it as part of prestieges (etc, a hero unit or Spectre / full campaign terran unit using raynor, or prestieges to add new units to commanders be added etc, ).

That’s really not the problem. The problem is to design a cool, unique, and fun commander without breaking current balancing. If you come up with something repetitive, or too OP, or too weak… that’s not good.
Current controllable heroes all have different mechanism and own advantage. But Selendis will have some similar mechanism like Nova, which is kinda… idk, a problem that any design should avoid. So, race is not a big problem here (unless you think it is racist).
And it is kinda sad if you have a half-finished project, your boss just comes and says that “no more project”. From what I heard, Monk only have 2 or 3 guys in the team, and sometimes these people were requested to shift out and work on other projects. Monk usually had to put everything together all by himself. Rob seemed not to give enough resources to Coop team.

Simple: no new contents update with flowery words.

Surprised no more warchest. I figured the payoff vs investment would be pretty good on the warchest.

Maybe we’ll get a holiday XP bonus at least.

Taking a break from prestige for the most part. I got the one’s I want for now. I’d be happy with a holiday bonus in 4 months to help be level some more.

So much for having Valerian with his cool mechanical attack tigers called Predators.

Harumph. :C

I’m just glad I finished the prestiges with the last warchest.

Originally planned to chill a bit more and wait for the next one if need be. Glad I didn’t lol.

Diablo 3 in maintenance mode: Welcome to maintenance mode, my SC2 co-op brother!

Starcraft 2 Co-op: !@##$%^. Don’t give me this when you get a new seasonal theme every 3 months.

Heroes of The Storm: Lol both of you are loser.

Overwatch, WoW, Hearthstone chuckled at HoTS’s comment.

WoW: Seriously, can someone get a mirror for HoTS?

F.
There are still quite a number of really annoying bugs in co-op. Hope they will be fixed eventually.

Hopefully they’ll fix some bugs and tweak some minor stats.
Although they stated they will not make anymore content, I doubt that means they will stop fixing bugs altogether.

“but the good news is this change will free us up to think about what’s next, not just with regard to StarCraft II, but for the StarCraft universe as a whole”

Diablo 4 is Proof that this is bs. Maybe a SC Battle royale f2p mobile Game in 10 years.

More likely to free up more people for their mobile games to please their Chinese overlords. You have a phone don’t you?

Why do people keep having the assumption that they made a mobile game for Chinese Overlord when the US was the biggest mobile game consumers?

The United States has generated the most revenue for Fortnite on mobile, accounting for $632.2 million, or approximately 63 percent of total spend. Great Britain ranked No. 2 with $38.2 million, or 3.8 percent, while Switzerland ranked No. 3 with $36.3 million, or 3.6 percent.

Moreover, the game has proven to be most popular in the US, where 18 per cent of installs were generated, or rather 45 million downloads. India and Brazil are in second and third place respectively for the number of installs.
