Bliz responded to the commander level issue over in the Technical Support forum. That’s where you want to watch for any updates.

Hey all, We’ve passed the info along to the Starcraft II team so they are aware of the new issues after the maintenance on May 5th. You all won’t need to do anything on your side as it should be fixed on the back-end. We’ll post an update here if we hear anything. Thank you for the reports.

what are the chances that anything actually gets done to prevent this from happening in the future?

I don’t know. I’m not a Bliz Employee so I don’t know what is causing it or what’s involved in fixing it.
