{Hero Concept} [Starcraft 1] Ulrezaj, Archon of Vengeance

Well. It’s certainly been a while since I’ve been here. But sometimes, you just really want to do something. So, I present a reworked and, in my opinion, massively improved version of my Ulrezaj concept from the 13th CDC. The older version of this concept may be found linked just below; This has been created as a separate post to preserve the CDC version as what it ended the CDC at.

Ulrezaj is a semi-complex Ranged Bruiser who must carefully strike a balance between unleashing their full might and keeping their form stable. At high Staility, Ulrezaj leans into a more sturdy, controlling style of combat, taking hits with impunity and dismantling their enemies. At low Stability, Ulrezaj instead throws themself into battle with little regard for their own safety, creating a terrifying kill or be killed situation for their foes.

Statistic Value (at level ‘0’)
Shields 2400(+4%/level)
Shield Regeneration 20.00/s(+4%/level)
Health 10
Health Regeneration 1/s
Stability Maximum 100
Stability Regeneration 2.5/s
Baseline Armor 20
Attack Damage 120(+4%/level)
Attack Speed 0.88
Attack Range 4.5

D - Unstable Form

Ulrezaj’s has Shields instead of Health, except for a final 10 Health that remains present. Ulrezaj’s shields cannot be ignored, and are treated as Health by any mechanic that uses Health. Any mechanic that uses Health is only 50% effective against Ulrezaj’s shields, except for Healing Fountains and Regeneration Globes, which restore Ulrezaj’s shields at 100% the rate that they normally restore health. Any bonus damage towards shields only uses 25% of its total bonus when targeting Ulrezaj’s Shields. Any shields granted to Ulrezaj function separately from his natural shields until they time out, at which point any bonus shields that do not push Ulrezaj’s Shields past his maximum are retained, turning into effective healing.

(Examples: 5% Health Damage would become 2.5% Shield Damage against Ulrezaj. 300 Healing would become 150 Healing for Ulrezaj. 200% bonus damage to shields would become 50% bonus damage to shields against Ulrezaj.)

Ulrezaj has a Stability resource, rather than Mana. Stability starts at 100, and regenerates over time. Ulrezaj normally regenerates his Shields at a high rate, but his Shield Regeneration decreases rapidly as his Stability decreases, at a rate of -2% Shield Regeneration per 1 Stability missing. Ulrezaj also naturally has Armor, but loses armor similarly to Shield Regeneration as he loses Stability, dropping to 0 Armor at 50 Stability and -20 Armor at 0 Stability. Ulrezaj’s abilities and basic attacks gain altered properties based off of Ulrezaj’s Stability.

(Notice: At 49 Stability or below, Ulrezaj’s shields begin to deteriorate over time, rather than regenerating. Similarly, at 49 Stability or below, Ulrezaj has baseline negative Armor.)

For each point of Stability Ulrezaj is missing, he gains 0.5% Attack Speed and 1% Lifesteal, but loses 0.5% Attack Damage, up to +50% Attack Speed, +100% Lifesteal, and -50% Attack Damage. Ulrezaj’s personal Lifesteal on his basic attacks restores 100% of the normal Health restored as Shields.

Flavor Text and Details

Archons are powerful beings of pure Psionic energy, with barely any physical presence. Thus, their bodies are weak, but encased in such a powerful aura of energy that their technical fragility barely matters, reflected in the first part of this Trait.

Archons are also dangerously unstable due to their status as beings of (near) pure energy, with any Templar merging into an Archon usually doing so as a desparate last resort, as those who merge will not survive for long. Ulrezaj embodies this far more than any other Archon, being unique with being comprised of 7 separate entities, unlike the traditional 2 that comprise most Archons. However, they have also found a way to sustain their presence, siphoning the energy from other beings and fonts of powerful energy to maintain themselves. This is reflected in the rest of the trait, and the general gameplay of Ulrezaj overall.

For Ulrezaj’s final trait passive, in terms of animation, I would imagine that, at high Stability, Ulrezaj’s attacks are decisive, with heavy weight to their animations, and generally lean towards him directing his power towards them. At low Stability, however, I would imagine that Ulrezaj’s attacks are more frantic, with him not committing to the attacks in full and instead siphoning energy back as a primary focus. In terms of overall animation at different levels, I imagine Ulrezaj as upright, confident, and deliberate while at high Stability, while his movements slowly become erratic and faster as his Stability decreases.

Q - Chaotic Torrent

Ulrezaj focuses raw Psionic might forwards, dealing 55(+4%/level) damage to all enemies within a cone every 0.25 seconds while holding the button. For each 0.25 seconds held, Ulrezaj’s stability decreases by 2.5. For each point of Stability Ulrezaj is missing, Chaotic Torrent deals 0.5% increased damage, gains 0.5% increased range, and 0.25% increased width, up to 50%, 50%, and 25% respectively. Chaotic Torrent follows Ulrezaj’s cursor while being channeled.

Cast Quotes

“Obliterate!”
“Scatter before us!”
“Taste our fury!”

Cone Size - 60°, 3.0 Length.
Cooldown - 0.5 seconds.

W - Dark Feast

Ulrezaj reaches out to nearby enemies over 0.5 seconds, before drawing their energy into themself. Enemies within range take 260(+4%/level) damage, and 75% of the damage dealt to enemies is restored to Ulrezaj’s Shields. Any Shields gained over Ulrezaj’s maximum persist for 3 seconds. Additionally, for each enemy hit, Ulrezaj regains 5 Stability, increased to 10 Stability for each enemy Hero hit, as they stabilizes their form with the life force. For each point of Stability above 50, Ulrezaj regains an additional 0.5% of the damage dealt as Shields, up to 25% at 100 Stability. For each point of Stability below 50, Dark Feast deals 1% more damage, but restores 0.5% less of the damage as shields, up to 50% and 25% respectively. Dark Feast considers Ulrezaj’s Stability on cast start, rather than cast resolution.

Cast Quotes

“Your life sustains us.”
“Feed your god!”
“We shall make greater use of this.”

Radius - 3.5 Units.
Cooldown - 10 seconds.

E - Oblivion Rush

Ulrezaj slips into the Void, entering an Unbreakable Stealth for 1 second. While Stealthed in this way, Ulrezaj gains 40% increased movement speed and ignores all unit collision. When Ulrezaj’s Stealth ends, Ulrezaj releases a burst of overwhelming psionic energy, consuming 20 Stability and dealing 280(+4%/level) damage to nearby enemies and applying Confusion and a 30% movement speed slow to each enemy hit for 1 second. For every 2 points of Stability Ulrezaj has when casting Oblivion Rush, the Confusion and Slow each last for 0.01 more seconds, up to a maximum of 0.5 seconds.

Confusion - Confused Heroes have their movement commands and ability cast directions inverted. Confused Minions and Monsters are instead Stunned.

Cast Quotes

“We take to the void.”
“Watch them scatter in fear.”
“Oblivion calls.”

Maelstrom Radius - 2.5
Cooldown - 12 seconds.

Heroics

R - Maelstrom

Ulrezaj begins to unleash a horrific surge of pure psionic power, overwhelming nearby enemies. Enemies within range of Ulrezaj take 100(+4%/level) damage each second, and are overwhelmed; Whenever an overwhelmed hero casts an ability, it casts normally, but the overwhelmed hero immediately takes an extra 200(+4%/level) damage and is Silenced for 1 second, the psionic power lashing out at them. While Ulrezaj is channeling Maelstrom, they lose 20 Stability per second. If Ulrezaj runs out of Stability, they can continue channeling Maelstrom, but take 200(+4%) damage per second, increased by 25% for each additional second they continues channeling without any Stability. This increased damage from their own Maelstrom lasts until they stop channeling it. Ulrezaj may act normally while channeling Maelstrom, and may reactivate it at any point to end its effects.

Cast Quotes

“Behold, our power unleashed!”
“Kneel before your god!”
“Be unmade by our rage!”

Radius - 4.5.
Cooldown - 100 seconds, after Ulrezaj stops channeling it.

R - Hysteria

Ulrezaj focuses their mind onto the targeted area, channeling for 0.5 seconds. At the end of the channel, Ulrezaj supplants their will onto each enemy in the area; Non-structure enemies are subjugated temporarily, being Taunted to the nearest one of their allies, prioritizing allies that fall under the same unit classification(Heroes, Minions, Monsters, etc.). Heroic enemies under Hysteria’s effects may deal a maximum of 350(+4%/level) damage to their allies before breaking free of the effects, but non-Heroic enemies are taunted until the end of the duration. For each 250(+4%/level) damage dealt by Ulrezaj’s enemies to their own allies, Ulrezaj regains 10 Stability and 200(+4%/level) Shields, feeding off of the chaos. Hysteria lasts for 5 seconds, reduced by 75% on Heroic enemies.

Talent Tree

Talents

Tier 1 | Level 1

(Playstyle Defining)

(!)Dangerous Balance D

Quest: Maintain a balanced Stability between 25 and 75 for 600 seconds. Time spent from 25 Stability to 75 Stability counts as normal. Time spent from 35 Stability to 65 Stability counts as double. Time spent from 45 Stability to 55 Stability counts as quintuple.
Reward: After maintaining this Stability for a cumulative 300 seconds, Ulrezaj gains 5% Spell Power while within the appropriate range of Stability, doubled to 10% between 45 to 55 Stability.
Reward: After maintaining this Stability for a cumulative 600 seconds, Ulrezaj now gains the doubled Spell Power of 10% while between 35 and 65 Stability, and gains a quintupled Spell Power of 25% while between 45 and 55 Stability. Additionally, while between 45 and 55 Stability, Ulrezaj gains 20% increased Movement Speed.

Khalis FocusD

While under the effects of a Healing Fountain or Regeneration Globe, Ulrezaj gains 10% increased Spell Power, and additionally regenerates Stability per second; 1 per second for Regeneration Globes, and 2.5 per second for Healing Fountains. The duration of these is also increased by 50%, but their healing is not increased.

Memories of the Alys'arilD

For every point of Stability that Ulrezaj has, they gain 0.3% increased Cooldown Recharge Rate. While at or above 50 Stability, Ulrezaj gains an additional 20% increased Cooldown Recharge Rate.

Wrath of UlrezajD

For every 25 points of Stability that Ulrezaj spends, they gain a stack of Wrath of Ulrezaj, up to a maximum of 3. Ulrezaj’s basic attacks versus Heroes consume all stacks of Wrath of Ulrezaj to Slow the target by 15% per stack for 1.5 seconds. While at or below 50 Stability, Ulrezaj is always considered to have at least 1 stack of Wrath of Ulrezaj.

Tier 2 | Level 4

(Sustain)

Consuming RageP

Ulrezaj damages nearby enemies for 15(+4%/level) damage each second, regaining Shields equal to 50% of the damage dealt. For each point of Stability Ulrezaj is missing, Consuming Rage gains 2% increased damage and radius.
Radius - 1.75 units.

Rejection of UnityP

Ulrezaj regenerates an additional 20(+4%/level) Shields per second and 2.5 Stability per second while no allied Hero is within 7.5 units. Additionally, for every 1500(+4%/level) damage nearby allies receive, Ulrezaj regains 300(+4%/level) Shields. Damage allied Heroes take counts for double. Ulrezaj may no longer receive Healing or Shielding from allied Heroes.

Feast of EnergyD

Whenever an enemy dies near Ulrezaj, they regains Shields and Stability. 50(+4%/level) and 1.25 for Minions and Monsters, 100(+4%/level) and 2.5 for Mercenaries, and 250(+4%/level) and 10 for Heroes, each respectively. If Ulrezaj participated in the kill, their recovery is doubled.
Radius - 8.0 units.

Void BrandW

Enemies damaged by Dark Feast are marked for 5 seconds. The next time Ulrezaj damages them in that time, they take an additional 5% of their Current Health in damage, and Ulrezaj regains Shields equal to the damage dealt, consuming the mark.

Tier 3 | Level 7

(Offensive (Utility))

Gathered ForceD

For every 5 Stability gained and for every 100(+4%/level) Shields gained in combat with at least one enemy Hero, Ulrezaj gains a stack of Overcharged. Ulrezaj’s basic attacks against enemy Heroes consume 5 stacks of Overcharged to deal 20% increased damage and Silence the target for 1 second. Ulrezaj may hold up to 10 stacks of Overcharged at once. Stacks of Overcharged last for 5 seconds outside of combat, and any stacks that linger after that time are consumed to restore 50(+4%/level) Shields.

Unstable BarrierQ

Ulrezaj gains a charge of Safeguard while channeling Chaotic Torrent. When this Safeguard is consumed by an enemy’s Crowd Control effect, Ulrezaj releases a burst of energy around themself, dealing 200(+4%/level) damage to all enemies within radius 3.0, and slowing enemies hit by 40%, decaying over 1 second. Unstable Barrier gains the damage and range scaling of Chaotic Torrent based off of Ulrezaj’s Stability. After the Safeguard is consumed, Unstable Barrier cannot trigger again for 30 seconds.

Safeguard - Absorbs the next instance of Hard Crowd Control to hit the Hero.

Feasting VortexW

Dark Feast’s cast time is increased by 0.25 seconds. While Dark Feast is casting, all enemies within a 50% increased radius of its cast area are drawn to Ulrezaj at a rate of 3.63 units/s. Enemies in the inner 25% of Dark Feast take 50% increased damage.

Fist of UlrezajE

After casting Oblivion Rush, Ulrezaj’s next basic attack within 3 seconds is melee, deals damage as though Ulrezaj is at maximum Stability plus an additional 50% damage, and Silences its target for 1 second.

Tier 4 | Level 10

(Heroics)

[R] - Maelstrom

Radius - 4.5.
Cooldown - 100 seconds, after Ulrezaj stops channeling it.

[R] - Hysteria

Cast Range - 5.0.
Radius - 2.4.
Charges - 3.
Cooldown(Between Casts) - 5 seconds.
Cooldown(Charges) - 50 seconds. One Charge replenishes at a time.

Tier 5 | Level 13

(Offensive (Damage))

Hand of the VoidD

Ulrezaj’s basic attacks become Spell Damage, and gain benefit from Spell Power(Attack Damage) and Cooldown Recharge Rate(Attack Speed). However, Ulrezaj’s basic attacks no longer receive any benefit from traditional Attack Damage or Attack Speed increases. In addition, Ulrezaj’s basic attacks now splash in a radius of 1.75 for 40% of the damage, with 0.5% increased radius for each point of Stability Ulrezaj has.

Any effects in Ulrezaj’s talents or abilities that mention giving Ulrezaj increased Attack Speed instead grant them an equivalent amount of Cooldown Recharge Rate that only applies to their basic attacks. The same applies for Attack Damage being converted to Spell Power for only basic attacks.

Furious DelugeQ

Chaotic Torrent deals 25% additional damage, but consumes 50% more Stability. In addition, when Ulrezaj is out of Stability, Chaotic Torrent will begin to cost 50(+4%/level) Shields per tick, but deal an additional 25% increased damage. These effects may be toggled.

Devour the FrailW

Enemies under the effects of Crowd Control take 30% increased damage from Dark Feast. This damage bonus is increased to 60% against enemies under the effects of Confusion, Silences, and Taunts.

Resurgent MalevolenceE

When Oblivion Rush unleashes its maelstrom of energy, it leaves behind a field of lingering, unstable energy for 2 seconds. After that duration, the field explodes, dealing damage and applying effects like an untalented Oblivion Rush, copying the Stability value of the Oblivion Rush that spawned it.

Tier 6 | Level 16

(Defensive (General))

Void-Shaped BulwarkD

Ulrezaj’s basic attacks now restore Stability, starting at 10 Stability and being reduced by 1 Stability for every 10% Attack Speed from low Stability. Additionally, after regaining 50 Stability, Ulrezaj gains 30 Physical Armor for 3 seconds, which stacks with their baseline armor. This Physical Armor may only be gained once every 10 seconds.

Numbing WaveQ

Every 5 seconds, the next tick of Chaotic Torrent pulses with a lethargic wave of energy across its area. Enemies hit by this instance of Chaotic Torrent have their Spell Power reduced by 20% for 2 seconds. The duration of this Spell Power reduction is refreshed whenever that enemy receives damage from Chaotic Torrent, and may stack up to 2 times.

Umbral FeedbackW

While casting Dark Feast, Ulrezaj gains 20 Armor, stacking with any Armor from their trait. Additionally, if Ulrezaj receives at least 500(+4%/level) damage while casting Dark Feast, then enemies damaged by it are stunned for 0.5 seconds.

Veil of ShadowsE

Oblivion Rush’s Invisibility lasts for an additional 0.5 seconds, and at the end, Ulrezaj gains 300(+4%/level) Shields. Enemies that Ulrezaj passes through with Oblivion Rush have their Movement Speed reduced by 30%, decaying over 2 seconds, and for each Hero that Ulrezaj passes through, they gain an additional 150(+4%/level) Shields. Shields from Veil of Shadows may over-cap Ulrezaj’s Shield bar, and any Shields gained over last for up to 5 seconds.

Tier 7 | Level 20

(Storm)

Wrathful SingularityR

When Ulrezaj casts Maelstrom, they gain 3 charges of Safeguard that last until Maelstrom ends. Additionally, whenever an overwhelmed enemy Hero triggers Maelstorm’s counter effect, all other enemies within radius 2.5 of them take half of the burst of damage and half of the silence duration(100(+4%/level) and 0.5 seconds, respectively.)

Safeguard - Absorbs the next instance of Hard Crowd Control to hit the Hero.

ParanoiaR

Enemies under the effects of Hysteria receive 50% of the damage they deal to their allies. This damage does not count towards the 350(+4%/level) damage limit. Additionally, for every 10 Stability Ulrezaj recovers(outside of regeneration), the cooldown of Hysteria is reduced by 1 second, tripled if the Stability was recovered by Hysteria.

(!)Seven as OneD

Each Quest tracks progress retroactively.
Quest: Gather 21 Regeneration Globes.
Quest: Achieve 14 Takedowns. Kills count as double.
Quest: Kill 70 non-Hero, non-Structure enemies. Mercenaries count as double.
Quest: Spend and Regain a total of 7,000 Stability. Stability spent or regained past the minimum or maximum counts for half.
Quest: Deal and Receive a combined 70,000 Damage pre-Mitigation. Siege Damage counts for half.
Quest: Hit enemy Heroes with a combined 140 Ability casts. Chaotic Torrent only counts for 1 per second per Hero.
Quest: Inflict 70 instances of Crowd Control to enemy Heroes.
Reward: For each quest completed, Ulrezaj gains 5% increased Spell Power, and their minimum Stability is increased by 14.
Reward: After completing 4 quests, Ulrezaj’s base cooldowns are reduced by 20%.
(This is distinct from Cooldown Recharge Rate, reducing a 10 second cooldown to 8 seconds before other modifiers.)
Reward: After completing all 7 quests, Ulrezaj’s minimum Stability is increased by an additional 2. Additionally, all of Ulrezaj’s Stability-based effects consider their Stability to always be whatever values grant effects(Typically 0 and 100), or only whichever of the relevant values grants a positive effect. If different levels of Stability grant conflicting effects, Ulrezaj gains the positive effects without penalties from any negative effects. For each point of Stability Ulrezaj would normally regain from any effects, they instead regain 10(+4%/level) Shields, which can be generated over their maximum. Shields beyond Ulrezaj’s maximum last for 3 seconds.

Unrelenting FuryP

When Ulrezaj is slain, the seven Dark Templar that comprise their form split into Shades and land 5 units away. Each Shade attempts to reach Ulrezaj’s body over 5 seconds, ignoring unit collision and crowd control. Each Shade has 350(+3.5%/level) Shields and 10 Health, and they each deal 15(+4%/level) damage to all enemies within a radius of 2. Shades take 50% reduced damage from Area of Effect abilities.

For each Shade that returns to Ulrezaj’s body, he gains their remaining Shields as their own, and regains 14 Stability, as their recombination causes them to return to the battle immediately. For each Shade that is slain before combining back into Ulrezaj, their maximum Stability is reduced by 14, they gain 10% increased Spell Power, and they receive 10% less Healing and Shielding. These effects last for 10 seconds after Ulrezaj is reformed. If every Shade is killed before reforming Ulrezaj, they die as normal, and go on a normal death timer, instead of respawning in the field.

Unrelenting Fury may only trigger once every 180 seconds.

Font of EhlnaD

Passive - While under the effects of a Healing Fountain, Ulrezaj gains 15% increased Spell Power. The duration of Healing Fountains is increased by 100% multiplicatively. Ulrezaj gains the effect of a Healing Fountain when exiting the Hall of Storms.

Active - Siphon energy from the planet over 1 second, gaining the effects of a Healing Fountain. This active does not have a normal cooldown, and instead recharges upon gaining the effects of a Healing Fountain from any source besides this active effect.

Skins

Skins

Base Ulrezaj

“Ulrezaj is a unique Dark Archon, comprised of the union of 7 different Dark Templar, named after the dominant personality. Previously calm and rational, with their merging together, Ulrezaj’s fury has become the dominant drive behind their actions. Now, he storms the Nexus, seeking to claim its power as his own, and to take vengeance against the Highborn Khalai Protoss for the banishing of the Dark Templar.”

Ulrezaj’s appearance is similar to the traditional Dark Archon from Starcraft 1, without the hood, and with a form that pulses with instability. Their abilities take on a predominantly Red coloration, similar to their form, though with undertones of the more gray and green abilities of other Nerazim.

Skin Tints

Ulrezaj; “Void” Ulrezaj(Purple energy and black body); “Xel’naga” Ulrezaj(Green energy and dark blue body).

Master Ulrezaj

(Alternate name by present standards: Xava’tor Ulrezaj)

“On their quest to build strength so they could strike down the Khalai Protoss, Ulrezaj returned to Aiur. Finding a number of Khalai Protoss who had been abandoned when Aiur fell, Ulrezaj became a ‘Xava’tor’, or Benefactor, for them, inciting a desire to betray those who abandoned them. While doing this, Ulrezaj shaped their form to better suit their new position.”

Ulrezaj’s Master skin alters their form with a more regal and tyrannical general form, and grants them the Starcraft 1 hood.

Skin Tints

Master Ulrezaj; “Forged” Master Ulrezaj(Green energy and black body); “Khalai” Master Ulrezaj(Blue energy, gold body); “Twilight” Master Ulrezaj(Dark/Pale purple energy, silver body).

Cosmic Alignment Ulrezaj

“Once every 777 years, the heavenly bodies of the Kor’prulu System align, granting this force of nature a resurgence of power. During their brief time returned to life, Ulrezaj devotes themselves to trying to scour their world of modernity and restore the natural order.”

Cosmic Alignment Ulrezaj changes Ulrezaj’s form to a bare form, with a far more generally stable appearance. The cloud of energy surrounding their form takes on an appearance more similar to Magic than the Psionic energy that traditionally comprises archons. As Ulrezaj’s Stability decreases in this skin, they receive far more drastic visual changes, surpassing base Ulrezaj for instability. The skin generally maintains a red thematic, though with a more natural and less neon hue to it.

Skin Tints

Cosmic Alignment Ulrezaj; “Solar Alignment” Ulrezaj(Gold energy and white body); “Lunar Alignment” Ulrezaj(Bluish-Silver energy and grey body); “Dark Alignment” Ulrezaj(Purple Energy, Black Body).

Elder Ulrezaj

“A powerful and faithful servant of the Old God A’mon, Ulre’zaj holds a particular hatred for the Lich King Artanis, viewing him as a usurper to the title of God of Death, one that rightfully belongs to Ulre’zaj’s God.”

Themed Abilities - Ulrezaj’s abilities take on a sinister, purplish Eldritch hue, with an underlying dark and cosmic theme.
Altered Animations - Ulrezaj’s body gains legs, though does not utilize them to walk, minimizing the alterations to the animations.
Altered Voiceover - Ulrezaj’s voice modulation becomes more erratic, and generally harder to understand. The background voices take on much more drastic variances to their intelligibility, with at least one being distorted enough to sound more like an alternative language.

Elder Ulrezaj is a Faceless, with a gray skin nearly devoid of the naturally more purple/pink coloration that normally display for Faceless in Warcraft. The energy encompassing their body is turned purple, with an almost cosmic sort of design. As Ulrezaj’s Stability is lowered, the cloak of energy doesn’t undergo as drastic of a change, maintaining relative cohesion compared to base Ulrezaj. However, the faint constellations inside of the energy begin to snuff out, leaving Ulrezaj in a darker and more sinister cloak of energy at lower Stability values.

Skin Tints

Elder Ulrezaj; “Destructive" Elder Ulrezaj(Purple body, red energy); “Celestial" Elder Ulrezaj(Gold body, silver-blue energy); “Fel-der” Ulrezaj(Pale white body with fel energy running through it, fel-green energy).
