[Guide] Creating Your Own Highlights from Replays

In this guide I will go in details over creating your own highlights probably on the same level of quality as you see in WTF moments videos, fully recorded straight from the replay.

This thread is meant to those who always wanted to share or archive moments they experience in game but had no idea how to or where to start in the first place, leaving those replays to dust on the shelf until they are lost forever.

You will learn in this guide:

  • How to use a recording software.
  • How to use Replays and its Hotkeys.

Recording Software

If you already have a recording software that you commonly use you can skip all of this to Replays where I go in details over hotkeys and how to record exactly what you want from the replay itself.

There’s many to use, some come specifically for Graphic Cards (Nvidia Shadowplay) or others built into your Windows/Mac that records what is displayed on the screen, but I will go on a software I use frequently known as OBS, short term for “Open Broadcaster Software”.

Guide to OBS

Before you start reading this, this guide is mostly accurate for Windows users, I never had or used a Mac and therefore I don’t know how accurate this will be to you if you use Mac! Sorry :frowning:

OBS is an open source software used for Recording/Streaming, its popular that is used by a lot of people that Streams regularly to even Youtube Let’s plays, and the best part, its lag free*

*Unless your laptop is a super mega potato I am sorry, can’t help you

You can download OBS from their main site located here:

Installation

Once OBS is downloaded you can click the downloaded file to start installation, it should be an easy cake for anyone to do this, once done OBS will open an additional window asking you few questions before specifying which is mostly suited to your computer before automatically setting up settings, all of it is mostly when it comes to Display Size and how many frames you want to be recorded per second.

Setting Up OBS

What OBS would look like first time opening it.

To start, we click on File in top left corner then Settings.

Output:

Is where you adjust the quality and where to do all the work in your computer.

Output Settings in Simple mode.

Here you can setup simple things like the Audio Quality or which format you want your video to be in, on top of where to save it in your PC.

The thing about HotS is its a CPU intensive game, it uses to little to no GPU, hence why it can still run on a potato laptop from 2010.

If you have a GPU good you can change from x264 which is CPU focused (and also for the majority should be default) encoding to the other option, like NVENC that is supported by Nvidia cards (can be different for different users depending on their graphic cards, I can’t mention all of them you have to look it up when it comes to this part if its GPU or CPU encoding), which results in HotS to run as you do all the work on your Graphic Processing Unite.

When it comes to quality, setting it to “Same as Stream” will take what is set in “Video Bitrate”, anything else are presets when it comes to “Video Bitrate”.

Hotkeys:

Hotkeys Tab.

There’s not a lot to explain here, its to setup shortcuts to make it easier for you, since I am using this mostly for Recording, you can set up a key for Start/Stop Recording to start recording while you are in game and stop whenever you press that key again.

Video:

Video Tab.

There’s not a lot to explain here too, here you can adjust the resolution of the video, do you want it to be 1080p? 720p? Your call.

Also you can adjust the FPS (Frames Per Second) you want your video to be.

Recommended Settings for Heroes of the Storm with OBS

If your computer is pretty good at running games or just god tier

  • Recording Quality: High Quality, Medium File Size.
  • Audio Bitrate: 192.
  • Resolution: Same as your screen size (Basically unchanged).
  • FPS: 60.
  • Encoder: GPU Intensive.

If your computer/laptop is overall not good

  • Recording Quality: Same as stream.
    • Video Bitrate: 3000 - 4000 Kbps.
  • Audio Bitrate: 160.
  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720.
  • FPS: 30.
  • Encoder: Recommend GPU if you have a different option than x264 (CPU intensive).

Setting up a Source

For OBS to work, you require a source where it will get the footage from.

There’s two sources I will teach in this guide:

  • Display Capture
  • Game Capture

Display Capture

Right click anywhere in the Sources box and click Add then Display Capture.

Basically a no brainer, it will record anything on your screen especially when you alt tab through different windows.

Display Capture in action

The only setting that is available is if you want to Capture your Cursor or not.

Game Capture

For this to actually work, your game should be open before doing anything form here.

In this one you will record from an active window that you set to it in Game Capture.

Right click anywhere in the Sources box and click Add then click Game Capture.

Once that is done, you can give it a name so you know which is which.

In Mode change it from “Capture any fullscreen application” to “Capture specific window”

Once done, another tab appears called Window

Open that tab and select the game you want to capture from, as for this guide, click the one that appears to be named “Heroes of the Storm”

And you are all set! You can start recording your gameplay or highlights as this thread is about.

Game Capture in action.

If done everything right above, and press recording, and it does, you are all set!

To access your file locations click on File then Show Recordings, OBS should automatically highlight the latest recording.

Now we move on to the next part over using HotS replays.

Using Replays

In Replays you can watch matches you or others did, by default it will look something like this in a nutshell with no understanding of hotkeys.

And guess what? THAT’S DIGUSTING

So big, so messy, takes a lot of space, ruins this epic™ highlight™ you™ want™ to™ record™.™

So how can turn the above into this?

No messy UI, no Replay box, No map, no anything, except Notification and Kill feed because those cannot be disabled.

#fixhotsreplays :rage:

To do this we have to learn few hotkeys to get the following above:

Ctrl + Shift + E - Toggles the Top Bar of the UI and the Map.

Ctrl + Shift + W - Toggles the Hero’s Abilities, Bottom Left Portrait and their Health/Mana Bars.

Ctrl + Shift + O - Toggles the Replay Box.

Ctrl + Shift + C - Hides the Chat box, bugged for years. (#fixhotsreplays)

And we achieve the above, here’s a copy paste from an old thread I made a year ago that goes around Hotkeys in Replays, hope you find this helpful.

Replay Hotkeys

General:

P - Play/Pause the Replay

F - Goes Forward

B - Goes Back

-/= - Changes the Speed of the Replay

Ctrl + E - Restart the Replay (This is so bugged and will disable the UI instead, you need to observe a hero first to Restart the Replay)

Ctrl + T - Shows Timeline of the Replay

User Interface:

Tab - Toggles the Stats Tab that literally everyone knows why am I even mentioning this one??? .

Ctrl + E - Toggles the Top Bar of the UI but does not hide it entirely and the Map.

Ctrl + Shift + E - Also Toggles the Top Bar of the UI and also includes the detailed panes (which will be mentioned here) and the Map.

Both of these mentioned functions above somewhat work the same but these commands will be replaced with “Restarting” the Replay if you are spectating a hero .

Ctrl + Shift + W - Toggles the hero’s user interface (Health/Mana Bar, Abilities, and Talents Page) + also the Map.

Ctrl + Shift + O - Toggles the Replay box.

Toggling All of the three mentioned above this message will remove all the UI in the Replay.

Ctrl + 1 - Toggles Detailed Talents Pane.

Ctrl + 2 - Toggles Stats Pane.

Ctrl + Shift + C - Toggles the Chat Log, if it’s not working for you, just drag it to the top of the screen, works every time.

Important : Pressing Ctrl + Shift + E and Ctrl + E while Spectating a hero will be overridden by “Restart” which goes back to the start of the Replay, so it’s advised to press it BEFORE Spectating that specific hero (more details about spectating heroes in the Camera section).

Camera:

0 - 9 - Observe heroes, during observation:

  • Hero User Interface is added (health/mana bar, abilities, etc).
  • Vision is reduced to what the hero sees.
  • Player actions like left click to move and casting attacks are visible.
  • Team pings of the hero’s side will play instead of all pings from both sides playing together.

Note : The observe hotkeys seem to have an order which is from left to right: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0.

E - Observe all players.

Backspace - Similiar functionality to E which for some reason is now bugged

L - Locks Camera on the Spectated Player

C - Toggles between locking the camera and where the camera was while playing.

C and L - seems to not synergies well together, if you want to see where the camera was while playing, it is advised to disable camera lock (L) and toggle C.

Space - Centers the Hero in the middle of the camera.

Z - Zoom out more than you could in a normal game.

Shift + Z - Zoom out even more than you could in a normal game, also it’s considered the highest zoom out possible in the game.

Normal, Bigger and Biggest Comparisons

Normal:

Bigger:

Biggest:

Other:

These aren’t necessary but could be helpful for some people who like recording highlights.

Ctrl + S - Toggles Sound
Ctrl + M - Toggles Music

With these learned, you can make your own highlight clips, maybe then slap them into an editing software, upload them to Youtube or Streamable and share them with others instead of waiting for a channel to do all the work for you instead.

Here I even made mine:

Thank you for reading this thread, if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Cool. Very cool. Thanks

So many quality guides for free! :star_struck:

Even if I don’t end up making a highlight, I’m just thankful for this community resource.

Looking forward to the megathread of user created highlight videos!

Some time ago it was Samisha who introduced me to OBS when I saw the clips / .gifs he was using for various purposes, such as his guides.

Once you figure it out, it’s easy & quick to use.

As someone who sends in my moments to the highlight moment channels so do I think it’s a very nice addition, to include a clip of the moment. Chances increases that they’ll see it and it’ll make it easier for them.
(The chinese channel sends an auto-reply on their email to include a gif, video or screenshot, as it is)

This is a playlist of nearly-all the moments I’ve recorded since then:

Some of them you may have seen before, in the WTF moment videos.

Not all of them are my own moments. You’ll see a few involving Hoku, Ephrain, Cain.
The one with Sgt. Hammer panicing, that Hoku loves to share, is among them. (Who doesn’t love seeing a Hammer panic and die?)

(^love it)

Its okay he is a streamer, only masters and streamers can make guides

As far as I know you should show your rank license to have permission, I guess I violated that became I’m too shy to show my Gold 5 rank :disappointed_relieved:

:scream: does that mean we can play together?

Maybe
