This year, I rediscovered Joe le Taxi, an 80’s French Pop song (part of the Nouvelle Chanson Française sub genre) by Vanessa Paradis.
As a side note: From 1998 to 2012, Paradis was in a relationship with American actor Johnny Depp, and they had two children together.
I think Paradis may have been an influence on French Pop star Alizée, who in turn was the inspiration for the female night elf dance in WoW.
I think I already linked a video of Joe le Taxi, above, but I will link another here for convenience, along with some other French Pop songs:
Joe le Taxi English Translation:
Joe the taxi driver
Doesn’t go everywhere
Doesn’t go by the soda (popstand, I believe)
His yellow sax
Knows all the roads by heart
All the little bars
All the black corners
And the Seine
And its bridges that shimmer
In his box (caisse)
The music for Joe
Is the rhumba
From old rock to mambo
Joe the taxi
That’s his life
From rum to mambo
Traffic jam**
He’s like that
Rum and mambo
Joe, Joe, Joe…
In his box [cha-cha-cha]
The music of Joe sounds [cha-cha-cha]
It’s the rhumba [cha-cha-cha]
From old rock to fake mambo [cha-cha-cha]
Come on, Joe [cha-cha-cha]
Come on, Joe [cha-cha-cha]
Come on, darkness***
In the night, toward the Amazon [cha-cha-cha]
Joe the taxi
And Xavier Cugat
Joe the taxi
And Yma Sumac****
Joe, Joe, Joe…
Joe the taxi
That’s his life
From rum to mambo
Traffic jam
Joe the taxi
And the mariachis
Joe the taxi [cha-cha-cha]
And the cha-cha-chi [cha-cha-cha]
Joe the taxi [cha-cha-cha]
And the cha-cha-chi [cha-cha-cha]
j’en ai marre English translation:
I’m Fed Up!
Bubbles and water
Legs up for hours
My goldfish is under me
To bathe for hours
Makes my mouth water
Im foamely ecstatic
It’s not a problem
I lazy round
Bubbly and stubborn
I lazy round
Melon and water
Is just a dream
It makes me wonder
Is it a sin?
Bubbles and water
Legs up for hours
Bombs, you keep away from me!
Today lying low
Twisting up my toes
I swim in such harmony
So what bothers me
I’m fed up with loneliness
With my uncle overstressed
Fumbling, crawling for something
That never shows, just a dream
I’m fed up with creeps crying
Over the past, such a sin
Not to be cool, but a fool
If I could mess up their rules
I’m fed up with your complaints
Baby, well I’m not a saint!
Fed up with the rain, the plane
That makes me throw up again
I’m fed up with all cynics
Bathing caps and all critics
I’m fed up with being fed up! Poor me!
Bubbles and water
Legs up for hours
My goldfish still under me!
Delight of pleasures
Aquatic treasures
A place out of misery, my fantasy
I’m fed up with loneliness
With my uncle overstressed
Fumbling, crawling for something
That never shows, just a dream
I’m fed up with creeps crying
Over the past, such a sin
Not to be cool, but a fool
If I could mess up their rules
I’m fed up with your complaints
Baby, well I’m not a saint!
Fed up with the rain, the plane
That makes me throw up again
I’m fed up with all cynics
Bathing caps and all critics
I’m fed up with being fed up! Poor me!
I’m fed up with loneliness
With my uncle overstressed
Fumbling, crawling for something
That never shows, just a dream
I’m fed up with creeps crying
Over the past, such a sin
Not to be cool, but a fool
If I could mess up their rules
I’m fed up with your complaints
Baby, well I’m not a saint!
Fed up with the rain, the plane
That makes me throw up again
I’m fed up with all cynics
Bathing caps and all critics
I’m fed up with being fed up!
I’m fed up, fed up
I’m fed up, fed up
I’m fed up, fed up
La Seine English translation:
She’s resplendent, so confident
La Seine, la Seine, la Seine
I realize, I’m hypnotized
La Seine, la Seine, la Seine
I hear the moon singing a tune
La Seine, la Seine, la Seine
Is she divine? Is it the wine?
La Seine, la Seine, la Seine
I don’t know, don’t know, so don’t ask me why
That’s how we are, la Seine and I
I don’t know, don’t know, so don’t ask me why
That’s how we are, la Seine and I
I feel alive when I’m beside
La Seine, la Seine, la Seine
From this angle like an angel
La Seine, La Seine, La Seine
I don’t know, don’t know, so don’t ask me why
That’s how we are, la Seine and I
I don’t know, don’t know, so don’t ask me why
That’s how we are, la Seine and I
Upon the bridge my heart does beat
Between the waves we will be saved
The air we breathe, can you believe?
Learn to forgive upon the bridge
That’s how we are, la Seine and I
That’s how we are, la Seine and I
That’s how we are, la Seine and I
That’s how we are, la Seine and I
Pink does a remarkably good job with her version of Nothing Compares 2 U, a song that was song that was written and composed by Prince, but I still find Sinéad O’Connor’s —aside from her outspoken political and religious views—to be the most amazing cover of this song.
Sinéad’s contrasts between her soft low notes and her powerful, crisp, clean high notes, with that bit of “twang” in her voice is just stunning.
For comparison purposes;
Normally, if I wanted to share back a female New Wave Pop artist, I might have chose Kate Bush, but TikTok and Stranger Things have already succeeded in successfully resurrecting her music from obscurity.
Cindi Lauper or The Eurythmics would be good choices, but I will go with Blondie’s Heart of Glass (even though Miley Cyrus has already re-popularized this song), because Blondie’s version is still the best. And I will toss in a Kylie Minogue song that I just can’t get out of my head:
I love Suzi Quatro’s The Wild One—and Cherry Bomb, either The Runaways’, or Joan Jet’s, or both go nicely on a playlist with The Wild One. So does some 70’s songs from Heart.
Dreaming Blondie is great, along with some other Blondie songs that I have not tired of:
This is pretty old, but Nobuo Uematsu wrote my favorite gaming music ever, and the performance is from Our Mayor:)
I feel like I recently discussed Robert Plant & Alison Kraus here already, but I think I did it somewhere else besides the Hearthstone forums.
Also, maybe when I first discovered this thread and I skimmed through all the old posts, I might have encountered some posts above about Plant & Krauss—anyways, whenever I think of them, this song comes to mind:
This ^ song often makes me think of a song by Joan Baez:
I saw Plant say once in an interview that he found more joy in making music with Alison than he ever did while performing with Led Zeppelin.
The movie “O Brother, Where Out Thou “ had some music with Krauss that I liked:
I had 16 year old sister who died from an accident on Thanksgiving day in 1992. Her bedroom walls were plastered with Guns N’ Roses and Hot Chili Peppers posters, so while I like both these bands, I am selective about how often and when I listen to them, because their songs remind me of her.
My favorites by Guns N’ Roses are Sweet Child O’ Mine and November Rain.
first thing from my auto playlist today.
