I had never heard Willy and Laura Mae Jones before today. I suppose because the song is telling a story, it reminds me a little of Ode to Billy Joe:
The most powerful song I’ve ever heard about a son’s relationship with his Dad.
Eddies voice is pure raw emotion.
I will always wonder what it was that Billy Joe and the girl were throwing into the water?
Bobbie Gentry has never explained.
Here’s another one in a similar vein as Ode to Billy Joe.
I call them: “Pop gothics”
Helen Reddy here:

I have a 70’s Pop playlist that has both Ode to Billie Joe and Angie Baby on it, along with:
I also have a playlist with a diverse variety of songs that tell a story of some kind, which includes Ode to Billie Joe, Angie Baby, You’re so Vain, along with:
When I think of Vikki Carr as a singer, this song always comes to mind:
EDIT: Removed my mix up of Vikki Carr and Vikki Lawrence.
Vicki Lawrence was Carol Burnett and the Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.
Vikki Carr is another singer. (Though a very good one!)
Great cover of Van Morrison from my era.
