All I know is 50 bucks went far enough in LoR that I don’t feel the need to spend anymore money. Ever. In hearthstone I could spend 80 dollars and feel terribly disappointed after opening all those packs. In no other card game I’ve played (magic, yugioh, LoR, etc) have I opened 40+ packs of cards and felt cheated. Hearthstone makes that feeling a normal occurance.
But I thought you were F2P in Hearthstone? Isn’t that what you keep saying why you have to play Face Hunter?
And comparing HS packs to MTG packs isn’t very fair as MTG packs are more expensive and have 15 cards each to HS 5 cards each, so of course opening an equal amount will yield better results in MTG.
LOR certainly feels more generous, but there’s also the feeling they are slapping a whole bunch of makeup on the rewards to make it seem like you are getting more than you actually are.
I am free to play in hearthstone. I said I COULD spend 80 dollars. Not that I did.
Magic also has a lot more cards. But even so, 1 pack in hearthstone is 2 bucks, right? What’s 1 pack of magic cards cost? Like 4 or 5 dollars? So double the price. Maybe a little more. Magic still gives more. And you actually get something tangible that’s worth money.
If that’s how LoR feels to you I suspect you haven’t played it much.
So you are less likely to get the cards you need from any individual booster.
Additionally each MTG deck requires more cards, so for gameplay purposes each single card has greater value in HS.
That’s why the average MTG players buys a box for each expansion, which runs at about 100 USD, and whales buy collector’s boxes which costs 300 USD. And they usually spend more buying singles to complete their decks, and there’s always the potential those cards get banned wiping out your investment.
And let’s not forget about Modern. Stores were charging 200-300 USD for the 5 card Fetch Land Secret Lair Set. Yes 300 USD for 5 cards.
But you’re still forgetting that in the end, with magic, you have a tangible item that’s worth money. In hearthstone you have nothing. Once the game is off all that money is gone. I honestly wonder why people spend so much on this game when you get nothing back but epeen. Unless you’re a pro.
I don’t forget that.
I also don’t forget most cards tank when they rotate or a new card replaces them.
Players don’t make out when they sellout, they recover a small portion of their investment, an investment much larger than most people make to Hearthstone.
Doesn’t matter. The point is hearthstone is expensive for no reason other than to cash in on blizzard fans.
Doesn’t every company do that in regard to their customers? Some people would say all is just made to cash in on the customers while others are (more or less) “okay with it” or even love it. Basically you don’t value what they’re offering as much as others. And that’s okay. But saying “they’re cashing in on…” is kind of irrelevant because that’s a given under the current circumstances. As a company that needs to make profit they can’t really do it any different.
Although I would also love it if the game could only run on donations and be truly F2P. But I don’t think that’s realistic. At least as long as Blizzard et al. are in charge. But yeah, that there would be no need to cash in on people would be my dream as well. Maybe one day… who knows…
What tangent are you both on? This thread isn’t about free or pay to play, it’s about how most, if not all, TCGs are riddled with power creep/OP cards (and in HS’s case ridiculous RNG oh-gee-looks-like-I-win cards that are held over peoples heads so that they have to buy em or not be able to enjoy the game after every new card update. Say what you want about MtG but at least you can compete with mostly older cards. This is NOT the case in HS in any way shape or form.
Funny, because HS was originally just a side project and was planned to be funded off card packs and cosmetic sales. Then it got popular and Actizard started with their shenanigans. Then another side project got popular: Battlegrounds. What happened the instant it got popular? Yup, now its not funded by HS packs, you have to buy a monthly pass! Cuz f*** you consumers!
Why is this funny? That’s not donation-based. You pay and get something for it. What I mean by “run on donations” is that everyone would have access to everything and the devs etc. are entirely supported only via voluntary donations from people of the community.
As I said it’s probably not all that realistic but that way you wouldn’t have problems with people complaining that they’re “scammed” and whatnot since it’s all based on voluntary participation.
You don’t like the game and want to see it go down? Don’t donate. You can’t afford it right now but others can have you covered? You don’t need to donate. You want to give even more so they can do even more great things? Donate a lot. They don’t follow through? Cut down your donations or even stop. Etc, etc. I think it would be awesome.
Unfortunately it also doesn’t allow exactly that “scam”. As long as a company remains in charge it will almost certainly never happen. They just “need” the money and by the way things are it’s just much easier to “scam” people and especially Blizzard as a big company is just “too big to fail”. They will get away with a lot of things and will do whatever it takes to get more and more money. If something fits their interest it’s no surprize it happens after all.
You just need to look at what you get for your money and decide if it’s worth it for you. Others might feel “scammed” but I do not and therefore will continue to support them. It all depends on how you evaluate those things.
Example: Some people would pay like 50€ or more for concert tickets (well, before and after the pandemic). I think that’s ridiculous. Like that’s way too much for just one evening. Compare that to Hearthstone and how much fun I could have instead for the same money. But that’s just how I evaluate those things. There are many others that evaluate it completely differently.
Did you miss the part where WOTC was artificially creating scarcity of Fetch Lands to sell them at ridiculous prices?
You can play older formats, sure, you just have to put a mortgage on your house or sell a kidney first.
Your experience is also the same as my experience. Granted, I didn’t play LoR for long (I went through all tutorials and was able to craft a deck), but I immediately saw the differences and saw how easy cards were to obtain.
The only major plus that Hearthstone has over LoR is that Hearthstone looks more beautiful. That is, Hearthstone caters to simplicity and has a “minimalist” feel to it which is what makes it visually appealing. LoR felt “clunky” but that was because I was so used to the simplicity that Hearthstone has to offer.
Once you get over the fact the LoR isn’t as visually appealing as Hearthstone, you can fall in love with the rest of the game.
I’ve always loved the way Riot treats the player base. I’ve hated the way Hearthstone has treated players. Riot is all about giving players free stuff because they realize that it promotes the game and makes people invest in the game with actual money.
League of Legends is 100% free to play. 100%. It’s not pay to win at any aspect of the game. They could charge for this game and they don’t. They want you to play it, experience it, then invest in it for the love of the game. 100% free to play…people really only pay actual money for skins. 2016 they had a revenue of $1.8 billion dollars.
Riot 100% understands. Give people the game to play for free and make a connection to the game, and they will in turn pay for simple things like visual upgrades, etc. Don’t try to choke money out of your player base and you’ll bask in money.
Hearthstone (Blizzard) doesn’t understand this concept. And you can feel it in the game.
This is why LoR feels better than Hearthstone. You don’t feel like the company is purposefully trying to milk you. They actually want you to enjoy the game and it shows in their reward system like wildcards, etc.
cant agree more to that. I was able to make a tier 1 deck (tempo sej) and 2 tier 2 decks in the game just by grinding hard in my spare time for 3-4 weeks.
it made me happy so I put 60$ in game because I felt like contributing. it got me champion wild card and extra emotes. I cant believe I payed for emotes.

As for how the games feel in comparison, I think the word you were looking for was “elegant” not “beautiful.” I came back to Hearthstone to feel the minimalist design. I enjoyed the feel of Legends of Runeterra because of its depth of lore hinged off of League of Legends. Neither is superior, just different.
As far as how LoR feels as a (potential) “buyer” in the gaming market, I will never forget that Riot lied to LoL players for years about allowing cheat services to integrate for a secret kickback. This was allowed in ranked play whereby professional (paid) players were selected. Outright corruption, as happens in any unregulated competition. At least Riot finally admitted it a couple years ago after legal pressure. The feeling I got as a (one week) LoR player was that ranked games were rigged, but arena-ish games were fair; meaning the fair games would have be paid for. And, as for the ranked games manipulation, I expect that a cheat service will be behind half of it. Pay to win as always.
I still like HS but there really is no denying that LoR has a FAR superior economy and f2p experience. Really solid gameplay wise as well. Playing both atm.
The art in LOR is far superior in my opinion. It is strategically a stronger game as well with far less randomness. I don’t hate randomness, but I accept it for what it is…a fun way to pass the time.
LOR makes me plan out my turns far more than Hearthstone. Both are fun, but in different ways.
I don’t understand the idea that hearthstone has better presentation. The look of runeterra, customizable boards, and general art makes it look more mature. The card flavor text when you dig into it is better as well as it doesn’t just go for the snarky tone that HS does. They try to tell a story in LOR.
the choice is easy actually. if you are f2p or a budget player just go lor as it’ll be easier to rank up / get cards through grinding (it just had its first expansion dropped so there are not a lot of mechanics though in the game) and if you like to play for fun and dont mind spending money on the game, play hearthstone.
how is it easier to get cards in LoR? I played it awhile back; tried to get into it but TBH it’s way too confusing for me.
first it’s reasonably priced when compared to other options second why is ‘cashing in’ supposed to be bad? oh i forgot: they’re supposed to work for free even though you yourself never would. right, then. i don’t know why people always expect businesses to intentionally lose money…like, are you daft?
you need to level regions till you hit level 8 in all regions (it’ll take 4 to 5 days to grind with 10 games a day as avg and daily quest with a simple burn deck, since its f2p and top/mid 2 tier ). if you do that then you’ll get about 7 legendary, 10 epic , 20+ rare, about a 100 common wild cards. that’s enough to create any tier 1 deck in the game (I would suggest tempo sej since sej is used in a lot of tier decks in current meta or you can also build deep). keep gathering exp though since on Tuesday you unlock chest and get reward for grinding (generally a champion wildcard and epic ones too, a sh*t load of shards, cards and a arena pass).
