Tested and confirmed. The stuttering is about VRAM not being handled well by the game. So essentially - “optimization”.
The game uses currently 23GB out of 24GB VRAM on 7900 XTX (4k, maxed settings).
By lowering shadows and textures to medium, the VRAM usage dropped from 23GB to 14GB (I was in a dungeon). After walking out from the dungeon, I got a major stutter and noticed as the VRAM usage bumped up by 400MB in an instant.
= the stuttering is caused by poor VRAM handling
This was present in closed beta too. Reported it back then, but it’s still here.
-_^ yes, this issue is a deal breaker. I am unsure if I should keep my pre-order since they are still yet to fix this, and who knows if they will ever fix it before release.
Same issue here. What is even crazier is if you switch between low, medium, and high textures, the VRAM usage is all over the place between 5gb-23gb on my RTX 4090. Please keep high textures but look into VRAM tweaks:
I7-12700k, 32GB of RAM, RTX 4090, 4TB NVMe, 42" 4K LG C2 OLED
can confirm.
I’ve got a RTX3060TI, i5 9600k and 32GB RAM
I started with high settings on 1440p, which ran smooth in 60fps besides stuttering here and there.
But after 20 to 40 minutes, the game crashed. So i had to adjust the settings to medium, and had no further issues from this point on.
if they had reports of this and didnt consider fixing it before the beta/release imagine what else they know of and arent fixing. And apparently the game was bricking some peoples gpus which is messed up and probably due to the ops post. definitely a deal breaker and says a lot about whats going on…
I have the exact same problem described by others in this thread. I’m playing with everything ultra maxed out and after 20min-30min of gameplay the game constantly stutters every other 5s-10s. Check my linked thread where I show this problem happening in a capture with low ping (so no, this isn’t a network latency problem).
dear @fex thank you for your detailed observation, hope it is fine with you that I have added your helpful observation to my quality bug report in this regard. If there is anything to add on technical level, feel free to do so.
Appreciate your in-depth analysis, so Blizzard gets more clues on the potential root causes.
It’s the ultra textures, on a 10GB 3080 I get a ton of stutter on ultra, but high is buttery smooth. It’s a shame because the high textures are very muddy in places.
sarcastically funny if this is the case. Reminds me of the stuttering and issues in performance when using Sacred 2 high quality texture pack in the deluxe edition on later hardware. quite a #flashback
