Diablo 4 Crashing once every 15 minutes or less due to GPU utilization spiking to 100%

Playing through Steam and having the same issue. First 15 to 30 mins the game runs butter smooth, then it randomly plummets.

Changing graphic settings doesn’t seem to have any effect on preventing this to happen nor does it increase performance after it starts.

I am pretty sure that the fix was deployed right before the Labor Day weekend and the gameplay was great. I don’t know what they did but it is definitely back to pre-fix days. Annoying and frustrating

Does not work for me. Still spiking then crashing.

Please reply and respond. Let blizz know that this not just an isolated problem.

I’ve tried to lock my fps to 60, and res down to 1080p, turn off HDR, etc.
But nothing works.
The temps of GPU and CPU are normal.

What I could do these days were launch the game to login screen and pray.
If I was lucky enough, it would login successfully, or crash.
If I was lucky enough, I could open my chest or bag, or crash.
If I was lucky enough, I could open the map, or crash.
If I was lucky enough, I could teleport to the other town, or crash.
If I was lucky enough, I could walk, or crash.
If I was lucky enough, I could use my skills, or crash.
If I was lucky enough, I could pick up items and check them, or crash.
Before EVERYTHING I wanna do I have to pray.

I don’t think it’s a normal experience with a brand new pc built with $3300.
It have happened when v1.1.1 launched. And coming back again.
This was the WORST gaming experience in my life.

The fact of the matter is, there is most likely no solution to this problem, and what makes this far more confusing and frustrating to report is that everyone might be experiencing something slightly different.

Unlike launch and S1, this was a pretty buggy season launch. A lot of people are experiencing issues, and mine in particular I feel is getting confused with other similar/related bugs.

I would encourage EVERYONE to make sure their issue is the same. If you take a look at the fenris crash logs, search for “DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED” or “DeviceLost”.

Hopefully blizzard has answers for us soon.

Since you are getting the “DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED” error, you might try this other fix with a similar issue. It involves editing the registry, so proceed with caution.

If you google “tdrdelay setting”, there’s a post from Adobe (a reputable source) about this as well, so it’s a known “fix” for certain applications that have long delays that crash the GPU driver. I doubt 60 seconds is necessary though. 10-15 based on the link I provided may be sufficient.

Hope this helps!

Unfortunately this didn’t help.

While this did make the game hang longer on the crash screen, the same thing happened, and the same crash was displayed. Hopefully an actual fix for this issue comes sooner rather than later, but i highly doubt we’ll be seeing a fix for at least a few months.

I was having almost the same trouble but using a GeForce RTX 2080 Super. It started with season two (my issue) I was having graphics issues to include crashes/lock ups/system reboots/screen flashes. But when the last patch came out (10-24-23) I also updated my drivers. That is when the game became unplayable. I tried a lot of things so, I’m not one hundred percent sure this was my issue but when I remember the issue was the same but less frequent with the previous Game Ready driver release I decided to roll back two driver versions.
That at least allows me to play the game again. Still a few more bugs but at least I can play more than ten minutes now without a crash/lock up/reboot. hopefully this helps. I’ve never had this sever of an issue with Nvidia driver updates. It reminds me of the last two times I bought an AMD GPU.

Adding on to say I am having the exact same issue. Season 2 has been fun but I was getting a few crashes here and there the first few days. Now my game has crashed like 40 times over the last 2 days. I crash most commonly when I am in towns and when I open inventory or shops/blacksmith but have crashed everywhere including the character select. I’ve run the game file repair many times. I’ve uninstalled and DLed the game again. I uninstalled my display drivers with DDU and reinstalled Nvidia driver 537.58. I physically reseated my GPU on my motherboard and GPU power cable. I play at 3440x1440. Usually I have everything turned up to max settings but I have tried lowering to bottom quality and several points between including the frame limits some people have been saying help. Not really sure what else I can do.

My specs:
Asus Strix Z690-E
Intel i9 13900K
Nvidia RTX 4090 Founders Edition
G.Skill Trident Z5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6400
Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB NVMe
Alienware AW3423DW

Iam getting the same problem, a list of codes just the same…didnt have it in season one please fix it .

After the patch 1.2.0.46536, my issues seems fixed. I have played 4+ hours without crash(or I am just lucky).
But according to the recent posts, BZ seems to run into other issues.

Fixed 100%

At long last I finally fixed this problem for myself. Ill post it here to hopefully save a few people with the same issue HOURS of time. Short version is I needed to update my drivers/bios for my motherboard. I use an ASUS mother board and they added an update to it on 10/11. Since I have done this everything is perfect. Updating on ASUS is a little clunky as you need to put the update on a thumb drive and pull it off said thumb drive in the boot menu. I dont know why but I never considered needing a mother board update until my friend suggested it. Hope this helps someone else. Good luck!

I’m having this issue since the patch as well, but on Playstation 5 console. It abruptly shuts down the system after a short time of play. There is no overheating nor any other indications prior to shutting down. It only happens when I attempt to play Diablo IV.

I know there are some crossover posts here that are not exactly what the OP was about, so something to keep in mind:

Those of you on Nvidia cards, might need to look into going back to an older driver from August or earlier… This may resolve the issue for now, till Blizzard and Nvidia can figure out what broke between the patch and the driver.

Nvidia put out a new patch today, but it does not fix this issue.

Go here for the advanced tool to download a driver:

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

Make sure to use the DCH versions. You want the ones from August. Either August 22nd, or August 8th. Game Ready versions only, not Studio.

Once you have downloaded that, then you need to get this tool to fully remove the current driver:

https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/

This tool will uninstall the current driver completely. Then run the installer you downloaded above for the older driver and you should be good to go.

This has been fixing the problem for now till a better solution is figured out by Blizzard and/or Nvidia.

This primarily helps those with slow responsiveness with menus, freezing, etc. Can’t hurt to try it and you can always re-update to a later version if you want.

I really think Nvidea’s driver F’d it up…the second to last driver started the problems and the one I downloaded today made the problem happen like every 10 minutes…I’ll give rolling back a whirl and post back my findings.

I provided some direct links above for Nvidia and DDU to help.

Is there any word of similar driver issues with AMD? The OP has a Radeon RX 7700 XT, so if there is an Nvidia driver issue, it won’t help in their case.

Increasing the tdrdelay caused the OP’s system to simply hang longer… so it’s clear that the graphics driver is indeed crashing in a way that is unrecoverable. That sounds like a game software issue.

It really feels like Blizzard just needs to fix something with how their graphics engine is working if it’s causing both Nvidia and AMD cards to crash repeatedly. All of these Fenris codes are being uploaded to them and opening bug tickets, so they should have a technical team responsible for reviewing them. I don’t feel like we hear much about crash fixes in the patches at all. Presumably because not enough people are experiencing them, but that doesn’t help those who spent $70 on a product that isn’t working for them. Blizzard can do better.

To be fair, this thread has been a mix of several different issues.

I sort of clarified it when I originally posted:

This driver roll back for Nvidia primarily is aimed at those having freezing, slow menus or crashing as symptoms. I have not read about or seen anyone posting with AMD hardware having those issues specifically.

The OP mentioned a different set of issues, so no, the suggestions made to roll back Nvidia drivers weren’t for them unfortunately.

In their case however, there could be several things that could cause those issues, and some are potentially hardware related.

To have my issue that I opened for this technical support thread, I think it is best to address one issue at a time. Those who are experiencing other issues should make another thread. My issue appears to be very different than most other people are having. I appreciate that people can get help for their issues from other kind folks such as yourself, but to have this issue properly addressed, I would like to keep this thread on-topic, and not a “catch all” for bugs related to crashing in towns and such (which is one example of many that are unrelated to this one)

As far as hardware is concerned, I stated in the beginning to my thread that everything in my computer is brand new with no overclocking or anything like that. No other applications/games are having this issue, just Diablo 4. CPU and GPU temps are completely normal at around 40 C at all times. I have zero idea what could be causing it as every single bit of hardware and software is the newest, and latest updates that they can be on.
