Diablo 4 Crashing once every 15 minutes or less due to GPU utilization spiking to 100%

(This was also posted in PC bug report, however I was not sure where this should be posted so I am also posting this here).

I have been trying to to play diablo 4 for the past few days now, and I have been having some MAJOR issues related to game stability.

When playing diablo 4 normally (Running NM dungeons, doing world events, etc.) my game runs completely fine. I never have any issues or stuttering, and can hold a steady, high framerate. However, after some amount of time, the game will freeze, my GPU usage will spike to 100% randomly, and crash a couple seconds later. This crash happens very often. I have had this particular crash happen once every 10 minutes in some cases. Now it has gotten so bad that I cannot even run a single nightmare dungeon without getting a crash halfway through and losing all of my rewards and progress.

After this happened for a while, I caved and built an ENTIRE NEW PC FROM SCRATCH. I replaced absolutely everything in my computer. Fresh install of windows, drivers, diablo 4, and I also wiped my drive. I have changed all settings inside and outside of the game as far as i am aware. After all of this, I am STILL having the same exact problem. I have looked for hours online through other reddit posts, forums, Youtube guides, etc. and have no fixes for this bug. I am hoping somebody here is encountering the same issue as I am and knows of a fix.

My specs are the following:

CPU - i5-13600KF 3.50 GHz
GPU - AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT
32 GB of RAM

To be clear, I am on a completely new computer with fresh drivers, windows install, and a fresh install of diablo 4. PLEASE speak out and I will do my best to reply to everyone as quickly as possible.

Blizzard, I like your game. However I cannot play it even after spending $1200+ dollars on brand new hardware and software. Please fix this!!!

UPDATE:

After doing some digging, I found that this issue in the crash log is listed as ā€œPresent Failed - Error : DeviceLost, SystemCode : 0x887A0005 (DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED)ā€ Which from what I can tell, is related to VRAM and is (as far as I am aware) an issue on blizzard’s end.

However, if anybody has any solutions I am not aware of, or if you are experiencing the same problem, please post it here.

I appreciate the reply, the more traction to this the better!

same exact problem. this was happening for me in season 0 ALOT. I did fix it by discovering that D4 would continually try and load the game (in the middle of play) from my 6950XT GPU to my on board card. I was able to fix this by going into bios and disabling my on board card. Never had an issue once after that. Unfortunately the issue has returned for season 2 after never happening once in season 1. I have done the same research and invested the same amount of time as you have (also new PC) and NO ONE has posted anything that can help and Blizzard will not respond with even acknowledgement of this issue. TLDR we are screwed and their is no who can help us let alone would help us if they could. Feelsbadman

Thank you for your post!

If we continue to speak out, maybe together blizzard will fix our issue
As far as season one is concerned, I never played in season one, but I can verify I experienced these crashes in BOTH the pre-season and every day since season 2’s launch.

I wish they would just say, its an issue on our end and we are working on it. That way I wouldn’t waste my time looking for fix that isn’t available.

Yeah, Hopefully with a louder voice, blizzard will listen. I’ve been reporting the crashes each time they happen, if everyone does the same thing they will have to address it.

Postedd this reply in another thread as well, but I was crashing randomly, and having to run scan/repair before it would allow me to play again. I tried shutting off overlays, made sure everything was updated with no luck.

BUT I found a fix that worked for me… I went into the graphics settings and adjusted my ā€œMax Foreground FPSā€ to 60 fps. Haven’t had a crash since… Hope this helps someone else, as I was getting VERY frustrated lol

I’ll give it an attempt, however I highly doubt this is related to the issue I described. I’ll update this post if it happens to work though. Considering this is a GPU issue and (most likely) an issue on blizzard’s end, I have my doubts.

I don’t know why, but this seems to have worked for me. I changed the foreground fps to 60 and have been playing for over an hour with no crashes. It would always crash when going from a dungeon or somewhere in the overworld and teleporting to a town almost within seconds. Now it seems stable, fingers crossed

Came here to make a similar report. Crashed several times today entering dungeons/cellars, trying to pick up quests or loot. Definitely will try the 60 fps change, but it’s very frustrating wanting to play a game, but not being able to because of weird bugs and glitches.

I know last season, it was stated that it was Blizzard’s end and a fix was deployed and it seemed to be better, but this season seems to have reverted back to how it was pre"fix". Hopefully something is figured out soon.

fixing that fps change does nothing for me…actually I heard of that change a long time ago and have been playing on 60 fps on foreground this whole time. I think we can do nothing on our end to fix it but Ill keep checking back for hope…

Having the exact same issue, unfortunately. That game is completely unplayable since I can’t even leave a town sometimes without a CTD.

Yeah, there is not much we can currently do about this issue currently, just keep reporting the issue and talking very vocally about it and we will be heard. The game is borderline unplayable for many people because of this bug, we are far from the only ones, and we need to speak for those people.

Not to be a doomer but it was an issue in Season 0 and it is again now. how many months does it take? The only thing I want is a blue post of confirmation of the problem so I can stop trying things to fix it all the time.

I was Crashing every 10 to 15 mins sometimes sooner … Thru one of the comments here i lowered my fps to 140 . Used to sit at 350 on ultra settings without an issue … So far i have done a world boss an 5 or 6 NM dungeons with NO disconnects . Hopefully that has fixed it for now

Same here with RTX4090, 64GB memory, i7-13700K.
It crashes even on login screen.
Great work BZZZZZZZ.

I have pretty much the same build … DDR5 only have a 4080 … I have now been online for 4 hours with no issues . So im going to presume lowering the fps has worked for me  Good luck

For all those crashing, how are your GPU and hotspot temps looking when it crashes? There’s been an ignored issue since beta of the game severely overpolls on cards, especially in things like menu’s and when using vendors with the completely stupid double rendering of the vendor npc which was causing very large temperature spikes for people compared to any other game they normally play.

I would look into how temps look, and also check into windows event viewer if it by chance picks up anything to report on the crashes since blizz has been ignoring these problems so far with no responses to people.

The temperatures were completely normal and there were no noticeable frame drops. I was running at about 41 C the entire time. I know of the issue with vendors as well, but that isn’t something I have been experiencing.

it’s 100% an issue with VRAM.
ā€œPresent Failed - Error : DeviceLost, SystemCode : 0x887A0005 (DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED)ā€ to me screams ā€œHey Blizzard, something is not working correctly on your endā€.
