[Main Thread] Windows 19041 - Freezing for 5-10 seconds

It’s getting worse each day more users experiencing these issues and them last longer.

If you have the option to do so, use System Restore to revert to a known good version of your Windows installation. If you remember the exact date you updated to 2004, you can pick the closest day prior to that date to restore to. Be aware that you’ll potentially lose some software installations, but those will be listed so you can take a look at them and decide whether or not to restore to that date’s snapshot. System Restore is turned on by default in all versions of Windows and is only disabled if done so manually by the user.

You can also revert to a previous version of Windows if you directly updated to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or 8. This is a last resort though, as it breaks more than a few apps that were updated when you upgraded to Windows 10. Use System Restore first if you can.

I went through a massive support ticket on this issue and was told another application was causing the freezing. I’m not going to stop using my PC in order to run this old game. Unreal.

I encountered the freeze when sound was disabled (Ctrl + S). Muting via Volume Mixer on Windows and having sound enabled in-game has produced no freezes so far.

Amazing, testing this and it’s working thus far!

Hey this worked for me too thank you. First hour in 2 weeks without freezing.

If this works reliably, that’s a much better workaround than fiddling about replacing DLL files every time you run the game.

Agreed, especially since it’s so much simpler to implement on the user’s side. Blizzard still needs to resolve this with the FMOD devs though and find out why it’s causing problems. Since it’s a fairly frequently occurring issue and can easily be repeated, that shouldn’t be beyond their capability. I’m betting a bug in the FMOD DLL Blizzard updated to is causing either an IRQ conflict or is causing the audio driver to crash and reset, much like GPU drivers are capable of when things go wrong. It’s also possible the issue in the FMOD DLL is actually merely bringing to light a bug in the default sound driver(s) that Windows 10 provides. It’s been known to happen.

Still, if simply muting the mixer solves this, that is good news as far as workarounds go.

Muting via the volume mixer with sound on in game did not work for me.
However swapping out the FMOD DLL for the Starcraft DLL as per this post from Keyblade [Main Thread] Windows 19041 - Freezing for 5-10 seconds - #170 by Keyblade-6785 is working for me.

My system didn’t really have freezing, but fps dropped from 120 - 140+ in 1909 to 30-70 in 2004. Tried clean reinstall of Crimson video drivers and still had issues. Tried rolling back to 1909 and it didn’t seem to help much. Since my windows install was fairly new and empty anyway, I ended up just doing a clean install and not getting 2004, and I’m back to the expected fps numbers.

Tempted to make a backup image and update to 2004 again and try some of the sound file swaps, since staying at an older OS version is obviously not ideal.

Wanted to post my system specs because it seemed most posts were nVidia and had slightly different symptoms.

Good to hear over 1.5 hours here and nothing.

You should mark solution as updating to latest 2004 optional build updates.

The W10 2004 update did not remove the freezes for me, thought it worked at first as I had about 30-45 mins without any freeze ups, but then I got hit twice in just a few mins with the usual 10+ secs freeze.

Odd I got like 30x an hour before this build patch are you sure it fully downloaded?

So, that’s the patch that takes Windows 10 2004 to version build 19041.488

EDIT

Superseded by patch that takes it to Windows 10 2004 build 19041.508
