I think you are making a false dichotomy. If they replace FFA loot with personal loot, then one can claim that they changed the loot system. If they keep FFA only loot and introduce an option for personal loot, the game is both preserved with FFA-only and has a selectable option for non-FFA that can be segregated at game or character creation.
This does not risk people thinking logically that D2R is repeating the mistakes of W3R.
The game is a remaster, not a remake. They will mostly keep the game the same as it has been, hopefully fix long standing bugs, maybe some skill/class balancing and perhaps additional QoL features that donât affect core gameplay.
âThe original is still thereâ is not a valid point. Further development of the original game reached a dead end a long time ago. It is hanging on by a thread of life support, is plagued with problems getting the game running correctly, the graphics look like crap by todays standards, plus thereâs the whole temporary restriction crap that people keep getting hammered with. D2:R addresses the major issues that have been plaguing the game as it is now.
If you want changes to the core gameplay or different content, wait for mods to be developed, or you can wait for Diablo 4. Donât change Diablo 2 into something else.
This isnât how personal loot would work. The same items would drop, it would just give one person a timer to pick it up before becoming FFA. This idea that loot would be 8X is a straw man.
Diablo 2 has changed so much from 1.0 to 1.14 itâs hilarious that people think adding personal loot or a charm inventory would âtotally change the game.â
Here is a list of things that would totally change the game:
Change combat to first person shooter
Remove experience
Make health and mana one resource represented by a purple sphere
Allow a human player to control bosses and minions like an RTS against other human players
Other player characters are hostile by default and canât be turned off. No grouping.
Vendors attack you on sight. Gear canât be repaired or sold.
Town portal removed from the game.
Entering a waypoint sends you to a random location.
You realize if the original developers wanted charm inventory they would have implemented it right? Itâs not some genius idea that is hard to think about, it just dumbs down decision making for players.
On top of that you donât realize the reprecussions charm inventory would have in PvP. Think about all the prebuffs people will keep in their inventory, all the extra sorb gear and resist charms they can keep to make certain builds even more OP.
Itâs a bad idea all around and does affect the game drastically.
Same goes for personal loot, the game from 1.0 to 1.14 was literally built on the shared loot system, there is absolutely no reason to think that would ever change with a new patch.
We promised us a remaster. New Graphics, few QoL changes like pickup gold and shared stash.
Alright, we got it ! Now we can play our beloved Diablo 2.
I played D2 at high level (pvp) for more than 15 years. Please respect the loyal players that keept Diablo 2 alive, QoL changes are welcome if well tought but please donât touch the mecanics, donât touch the skills, donât change the gameplay especialy if you donât understand them.
Donât tell people to stay in classic Diablo 2 if they donât like changes, this is low and unfair. We waited years for this day to come.
In D2R, they have repeatedly stated that they will have an authentic D2 version. In addition, through selectable option they appear to want to make an updated version in parallel. Both will exist. You get your old school experience while others get a new school experience. This was clear from the Blizzard announcement video and their subsequent press interviews.
D2R is a remaster of the original D2 that got released 21 years ago. I agree that some QOL changes are mandatory and should be implemented (like the shared stash, for example) as people have been finding workarounds to do them anyway. We should also get more end-game content/dungeons and eventually a new act and/or class, if the devs are up for the challenge. (they can easily contact the original developers of d2 and expand on their idea for a second dlc)
That said, things like personal loot are game breaking and would be unfair for the whole party if they are to get implemented. Imagine you are plvling/boosting someone throughout nightmare/hell and he/she gets an occulus or a soj? Now imagine that you farmed that same occulus or soj for a month and it dropped on the day that you plvled that person and you lost it to the invisible roll system and the rng gave it to him/her? Nice right? And that is if the loot and drop chances remain the same. If they are to get higher in order to please the community that wants personal loot - it would simply flood the economy and the game would become too easy.
The funny thing is that most people proposing stuff like this are questionable why they bought the game to begin with. This is a remaster of a game that came out 21 years ago and as such it should remain the same with better graphics, effects and animations + QOL changes (and not entirely new mechanics). I have seen people on these forums complaining that the game is too hard and that they cant even go through hell while also proposing that it should get easier, drop rates higher and personal loot implemented from fear that they wouldnât manage to compete with random players for gear. But why play with randoms to begin with? Why preorder a remaster of a game that you dislike and are not good at?
There is no such obsession, many QoL changes have already been added and more still are possible.
-Shared Stash
-Larger Stash
-Hotkeys to quickly move items back and fourth
-Static Gambling
-Auto gold
-Advanced Stats page
-Global servers rather than segregated realms
-Old Dupes/Bugged/Hacked/prepatch items wiped
And, possibly, the dream
-Mass public botting ended
These things are worth the price even without the graphic overhaul, which is looking awesome too. Keep in mind this is a remaster, which has a specific meaning in the gaming industry. Itâs what has been asked for. Now that itâs been announced a bunch of noobs crawl out of the woodwork to request carebear BS to desecrate the game that they would probably barely play anyways. Itâs irritating; if you donât like D2, if you donât think its âworth itâ, then do not buy and do not play because we do not want you.
This isnât true, it doesnât really have a defined definition. Some remasters make more changes, some donât.
Your attitude here is not helpful, nor does it help the discussion.Itâs fine if you think too many changes would make the game a worse experience. I to some degree, agree. But again lighten up its just a game, a few more changes wonât kill the game, while I think anymore changes should be made into a new realm.
Please lighten up, I know emotions can run high when dealing with stubborn people who like to hold tight to nostalgia. I trust the devs will do what best for the game with what resources they have. I donât however think all purist are as irrational as the people bashing shared stashes.
Blizzard has already done a fair compromise with QoL. Some of the more extreme idea like charm inventory and personal loot are bad ideas for reasons explained many times on this forum.
If you want a completely modern experience wait for Diablo 4.
Well to be fair, and to make sure we are even-keel here, that topic was on the Blizzard survey meaning it is âin playâ as far as decisions theyâre making about the game. Thus I would not say it is a âbad ideaâ given the developers themselves asked the community if they would like to have it implemented etc. Instanced loot is also prevalent in so many modern games - itâs not a âbad ideaâ per se.
Itâs also highly likely that FFA will remain in the game no matter what - you would never lose FFA and ploot would only be an option for others.
So FFA games would be created as normal with no extra action needed. Same as D2.
Ploot games would need an option selected at game creation. The drop rates would statistically be the same as FFA overall - the avg total drops per unit of time per player would be the same. The economy would remain unaffected when this is implemented correctly. Leeching and AFK are also not concerns when implemented correctly.
All that said, I will probably play FFA starting out and maybe ploot if itâs there at some point. But the options are nice to have.
Another factor is that so many will not purchase without ploot option based on giant threads and surveys etc. I think it would be a bit selfish of me not to want to grow the game and have new players experience the game if they would simply pass without a ploot option.
Again - totally get the concern but I feel the benefits of the ploot option far outweigh the concern because FFA remains you donât lose it and new players who would otherwise pass get to experience D2.
People that donât get the obsession to keep the game the same has clearly never devoted much of their time to this game as for me I have devoted thousands upon thousands of hours. I have beat the game more times than I can count on every difficulty on every character maxing out theirs levels. I have collected more items and sets and uniques then most people ever will. I have made almost every single ruin word out there I started playing this game when I was in middle School and I have been playing the original Diablo for even longer I spent more than 26 years of time between original Diablo and D2 and I even still play the original and the d2 and I will say try to keep it as pure as possible with minor updates as there is some updates that is needed such as the annoying gold pickup. When this was first announced I had been waiting on the game to have a remaster for a long time. And as for anybody saying that Iâm just a geek that lives in his momâs basement. I actually own my own house which I use the VA home loan to pay for. I have my own family and I still enjoy be able to just as much as when I was a kid. It has been almost a hobby to me. But to keep the game up and running and keeping it pure is a good thing as the replayability is through the roof even today I have still found things that I did not know about the game. Such as certain glitches and tweaks. So for people that say they donât get the obsession well thatâs because youâre not a hardcore fan. And that is trying to be polite as possible.
