Do you think blizzard is working on this? The game is getting up there in years and should qualify for it like other older blizzard I p’s. I’m curious to hear what your thoughts are.
I’m of two minds here.
On the one hand, I’m vaguely annoyed you created a new topic when we already have a topic about this that’s “recent” (at least by this forum’s activity levels).
On the other hand, this forum’s activity levels are basically nonexistent as-is. So if this gets more discussions going, I can’t really be mad about it.
it was discussed recently. You can read others’ responses here.
I’m expecting it some time Q3 2034.
Hard to say considering that their SC1, D2R, and WC3 remaster/remake sales so far aren’t that encouraging.
I highly doubt it. I think they may in the future but they just stopped standard support for the game. Other games were years past standard support before they were remade.
No. There’s nothing to remaster.
D3 is fine in the state it’s in. The graphics and combat are still better than most in it’s genre even at this age for the game.
For some of the tech guys, there are things like ray-traced reflections, natively higher resolution assets, more realistic looking models, spatial audio support, possible QoL features.
The likeliness is less than zero.
Didn’t d2r exceed expectations?
@Jazz
You really think so? I doubt blizzard would reject money from customers for doing a relatively cheap upscaling of the game? It’s not that expensive to do these days especially with A.I.
do you have any numbers?
That sounds interesting …
That’s less a function of how good it was and more about how awful the Warcraft Remaster was; most people, myself included, were already pleasantly surprised just to see D2R was playable on launch.
Though, to be fair, I do happen to think D2R is incredible. They’ve changed a lot of things and they’ve opened it up to single-player modding. So I can alter the changes I don’t like, and change other things they didn’t. It’s great and I love it. But let’s be honest, here: the massive disparity between expectation and reality on D2R, was NOT a good thing leading into it. We expected a total wreck and we got a luxury sedan instead; that’s great, but you don’t WANT your customers “expecting bad” to begin with, right?
I’m going to quote Orcinus here because he said it best (albeit not to you):
It’s one thing to say, and another to show.
Upscaling?? D3 is already 3D graphics. Who would pay more just for some slightly better looks on content - rifts, greater rifts, bounties, echoing nightmares, visions, boss fights, Ubers etc. that we have already run thousands and thousands of times over and over? Without knowing the details D3 already has some, or a lot, of the things that made D2R worthwhile.
New content is a different things. But that won’t, and can’t happen.
I think, though, that they could make some money if the Altar could bought as a DLC for non season.
I’m sure your intentions are the best. So I’m sorry if I sound a bit too harsh.
little tangent, if you don’t mind:
I haven’t touched WC Reforged so far. But have heard that Blizzard has reworked (parts of) it. So is now a polished game? Worth playing?
So, the content/functionality that was straight-up MIA from the original, has been fully restored. And I think there’s modding support now, from what I hear. And, while there are still bugs, my understanding is they are continuing to patch the game to address those. And, I think the original game is playable again? I’d need confirmation on that from people who own the original game still.
So those are all promising points, but that last bit - the fact that they pulled a George Lucas and literally replaced the original game with this travesty - is the unforgivable act for most people. Me, I just hated how I couldn’t save my game. They’ve fixed that, and if you’ve never played the original perhaps it’s worth trying it out now. But I’m forever going to be a “Han shot first” kind of guy.
I had read about that and just thought WTF?!
understandably so! Consideringall the problems that WCR brought.
Thanks for your insights.
My thoughts as well. D3 is already pretty enough. There would be no point IMO in making it look even flasher.
However, I would pay to have the altar in NS as I have never once played NS since seasons came out, but I would be interested in playing NS if it had the altar.
It is a good looking game for being as old as it is. It would need the enhanced realism assets, perhaps support for frame rates above 60, especially on console as well as other features for modernization.
Some who read about D2R said it didn’t need what it got and we’re fine with it as it was, but as tech evolves, some of those legacy games go without.
If it did, it wouldn’t enter maintenance mode within a year. The last official announcement was that it only sold 5 million after 6 months, to the point that even Blizzard players realized that and made a thread about it.

So, something like the old Jamella D2 Editor? I would be interested in playing D2:R again, if something like that was available. I remember countless hours of fun in D2:LoD using that mod to give crazy rare items to characters. A Necromancer that would spawn hydras on attack on a bow. Crazy stuff like that.
Way more than just that. Check out Diablo II Merciless on the Nexus:
