Contested loot - or how to make pickit less effective

There is a simple mechanic, which could be added to the loot system to make multiplayer games in D2R more inclusive and pickit scripts less effective.

I’ve created an image to illustrate the idea:

https://i.ibb.co/TTPb01r/D2-R-Contested-Loot.jpg

In short:

  • items of value (uniques, sets and runes) are flagged as contested for a duration of 3 seconds after they drop from a chest or a monster
  • a contested item will not disappear before the timer ends
  • a player who clicks on the item within the given time frame is added to the contest
  • the contested items are shown next to the players portraits who are participating in the contest
  • the winner gets chosen randomly and receives the loot (the distance after clicking on the item doesn’t matter)
  • if no player took part in the contest or the winners inventory is full, the item converts back into a regular item

The outcome would simply be, that bots and pickit users lose their advantage over legit players in public runs, which is my main concern. It would also make public runs with strangers or friends more enjoyable, when everyone gets an equal chance to go for an item. In the current state, the solution for many players is simply to play solo - even in battlenet.

3 seconds is too long for a hack and slash game. Imo

I could see someone liking this idea whos main source of items is following public Chaos/Baal runs.

Expanding on the thought:
Just make it so whoever clicks the item within the first second of dropping is added to a lottery pool, RNG picks the winner. If the winners inventory is full, it goes to the next winner, and so on. If everyone in the pools inventory is full, the item simply bounces and falls back on the ground.

This should only apply to boss drops.

My main source of items is not from public Chaos/Baal runs, so I’m not really worried about it.

Can you please stop proposing ideas against cheats that manipulate core mechanics? Thanks.

We rather need additional cheat recognition mechanisms and then perma ban those cheat accounts

This idea is garbage, this would make a run last 10 min when it should last 3 min. First come, first served, that is the game. Pickit in public runs has always been residual and when someone is using it you can notice that pretty easy, then you just unparty/hostile him and the problem is solved. Too many people thinking here without actually playing the game.

It would not increase the games length in any way. An item drops, you click it, done. It would simply give more players the chance to go for an item. It would not give everyone the chance though. Those who are fighting offscreen or are low on health/mana and can’t reach the item in time, won’t be able to contest it.

Leechers could easily be recognized and not invited to the next runs. There would even be an incentive for other players, to increase their chances in a fun (or nasty) way … I look at you, bone wall necros!

Too complicated and needless, the game is fine the way it is.

You came to wrong place, few people around here will spam you with their no change soon enough.

We are still ok with 2 seconds.

0 Seconds, please stop trying to come up with a new idea every 3 minutes as if the developers haven’t already thought about it or tried it behind the scenes. Like it or not, you are not coming up with any brilliant ideas that’s going to reinvent the wheel or reinvent how a loot table or loot works in a game. Please leave that up to the professionals that know what pros and cons it brings to the game. At this point, everyone and their mothers that want Peronsal Loot has been trying to come up with a new idea. The easiest and fairest way to possibly have people be on the same playing field is FFA loot. Everyone has a shot at the items equally. Without you bringing any hardware or physical variables, its 100% fair for everyone in the game. You guys spit out these nonsense pickit accusations as if everyone in a public game has it. It’s your fault for following bot games, its your decision to be in a game with someone that is either botting or scripting. In my years of playing diablo 2 I can confidentially say that the OMG HES USING PICKIT accusation has been thrown around a few times. Learn to click on the item or don’t join random players looking for the same thing you are in a LOOT GENERATED GAME. Please just enough with these threads.

So do you have any evidence that they tried it behind the scenes?

If so, that means that they already have the code in place to implement it later.

I’m positive if the team has been “discussing it”, they had to of either tried to write the programming for it to test or they have at least gone down the rabbit hole of what it does to the game and the ripple effect it has. These guys aren’t just sitting around with their fingers in their noses.

The whole point of existence for such programs is the fact that loot is shared, and you need to take it faster than other players. Until it stays the same (FFA loot) this can not and will not be solved. After your 3sec the same pick it tool will get the items faster.

Please show me evidence of ALL THE PICKIT scripts you guys so claim that have ruined your desire to play the game and has oh so TOOK SO MANY OF MY HIGH RUNES THAT I DESERVE BECAUSE IM IN THE GAME. You guys can’t do that prior to the bot infested BNET that we have now.

There is nothing wrong with the loot system. You want to make pickit less effective, make a private game. Adding timers to loot drops in a hack and slash is just stupid.

jeez, just expand the radius items fall and reduce the distance you need to be away from the item to pick it up.

But yes, the game is fine the way it is. But i’d prefer this option over ploot or others.

The developers certainly can discuss things without doing the coding. For the “rabbit hole”, Rod already stated that if an alternate loot system was introduced after D2R launch, it would be optional, set at game creation, and require opt in. So it seems like they have already established the parameters if this option would ever be introduced. Needless to say, since it would be set at game creation, they do not think it would have a significant impact of the trade economy (i.e. total drops remain the same and none of this up to 8X more drops disinformation) and would not require splitting players into a separate realm.

This is not going down the “rabbit hole”. Even Rod didn’t go down that path to see what it’s like. Just like he said that they could remove the stamina bar. Any gamer or person who is somewhat familiar with gaming could come up with those 3 parameters.

You guys knew what you signed up for the moment you preordered D2R. Stop trying to make it into your own perspective of what diablo 2 should be. It is the game that we all love and enjoy even with the things you guys think aren’t “FAIR” to the other players. You’re in hell trying kill the Lord Of Destruction and you want these players to wait for you to pickup your loot so we can continue the journey? Just because you’re second place doesn’t mean you deserve a pat on the back. Make a private game or stop whining like little school girls.

Yes we did. Did you?

Blizzard/VV repeatedly said that they were open to more changes if the players wanted them. Here are quotes and links for you to see in one place the verifiable truth.
