I think they’ve just stretched the fantasy too thin and haven’t added much to include these new definitions of Paladin to the lore / game. On top of this, all of the Alliance Paladins stand in unison in their faith, while the Horde races all seem to find their own ways of finding the Light. Sunwalkers, Prelates, and Bloodknights are deserving of some racial flare. Like unique names for Blessings and varying animations on certain spells gated behind some kind of grind or quest chain. Would be nice to go on a pilgrimage to become a priestess of elune and ditch my shadow spells for some arcane / celestial animations, even if it is just cosmetic.
Don’t know if this has been said already but im not reading all these posts.
They do make sense, the problem is when it comes to Paladin’s as a class the animations don’t match the faith at all. But here is why they make sense.
Prelates: They draw the light from their Loa’s, they are chosen champions of the Loa and guardians of their people. They DO NOT USE Holy Light or have faith in that, their faith is in their “Deity” in this case which ever Loa they could have. Being said it’s probable to see a Prelate loyal to Bwomsandi and draw from him instead (Glyph or quest ideas for the future?)
The problem here isn’t that they can or can’t be, the issue is the animations just do not match the faiths and the Horde sadly suffer from this the most.
Allow me to illustrate.
Silver Hand/Holy Light
-Human
-Dwarves
Hand of Argus/Holy LIght
-Draenei (They could use some minor alterations in the future)
Army of the Light/Lightforged/Holy LIght
-Lightforged Draenei (Needs Talbuk mount)
Elune’s Chosen?
-Night Elves (There are Night Elf paladins in the Order Hall campaign, seeing more into how Elune works her wrath with the recent quest line in the Night Warriors one could figure this is how their Paladins are created by basking and channeling Elune’s Wrath)
The animations honestly only fit those so far that work with the Holy Light as a faith to be completely honest.
Blood Knights
-Blood Elves (At one point they had a few unique animations but not anymore. This should make a return) They at first got their powers by forcing the light via Arcane means. In some sense one could say the Sunwell is their font of power again.
Sunwalkers
-Tauren: Literally the worst represented, few armor sets match and animations don’t match at all with their faith in the Sun. They do not draw from Holy LIght but in fact they draw from the Sun deity thing itself.
Prelates
-Zandalari: They as above, draw from the Light of the Loa, not the Holy Light. And personally I do not think yet again standard Paladin animations match them.
Others
Holy Light
-Scarlet Crusade: In Lore their light appears as a deep red but it is still Holy, going to show that different forms of faith regardless of issues still can come forth.
-Sir Zeliek: One of the old Four Horseman, though his body was in fact controlled by the Lich King, this guy had such a damn high will save he kept his mind in tact and could in fact still draw from the Light.
Light of the TItans
-Valajar/Vry’kul: WIth what we see in Legion with the questlines from the Paladin Order hall and Odyn himself we can see the “holy light” is present. Now I do not know if they are drawing from the light itself OR they have an alternate source of holy power discovered by the Titans. This has never really been confirmed by Blizzard on how this works. But ultimately the best example is Tyr and his Vry’kul followers could arguably be called the First Paladins on Azeroth and from this the Silver Hand got it’s name.
^Also side note: Vry’kul would make an excellent allied race for Alliance given the history of them and Tyr itself. Would be a great addition. The counter for this would be Ogres on the Horde. Two big beefy races
Regardless I guess the big thing here is to look at the Paladin case as many different faiths, some are of the Holy Light, others are not and that is okay. Much like how Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, various D20 systems have the Paladin and Cleric classes and you pick which Deity you want to follow. The choice affects how you approach your class, how you RP and your position in the world. Granted WoW is not that complicated but that is honestly the mindset on how it works and there isn’t a problem with that.
Being said: GIVE ME VRY’KUL PALADIN!! >:(
Id counter with Shaman should never have been given to Alliance then since their addition is a sloppy and poorly written story to add more to their list of choices…
I could say that, but then again, no one really cares about Shaman and it probably wouldnt be a big deal to Alliance if they never were allowed.
=P
So… I’m here to talk to you about the gnome paladin initiative…
Thinking about it the wrong way.
A Paladin is little more than an exemplar of virtue, lawfulness, virtue, justice, and dedication to a higher power in a martial way.
The Zandalari Paladins are just paladins by another name-- Prelate. They’re going to extol the virtues of their society by representing it in everything they do. What’s important to a Stormwind Paladin may not be the same to a Zandalari Prelate, but you can bet that they’ve got some common shades:
- Devotion to their faith/gods
- A strong desire to protect their people
- Martial prowess
- Believe in carrying out edicts of justice, virtue, and righteousness as it relates to the values of their own people.
IMO, the “Paladin” name doesn’t really fit the class that well anymore since almost every race that can be a Paladin goes by a distinct, different name.
Same could be said about humans.
Just let everyone be everything. At this point from the plethora of post being made to rationize the inception of a class combo, it is clear that all those in favor of adding this option care little of the lore in this game. Of course as many times as it has been changed to fit in most the garage changes, does lore even matter any more? It is obvious these pro troll folks don’t care. So why should we?
What if they mixed up the alliance paladins a bit so the Alliance weren’t so similar in faiths. Say they made dwarf paladins into more of a Rune Knight fantasy and added Kaldorei moon paladins, since the men canonically can’t be High Priestesses of Elune. This would add a little more variety to the Paladin fantasy in WoW so the factions aren’t so jarringly different in how they approach the class.
Only if I can name my Moon Knight: Jake Gyllenhall
I have no hope of blocking the addition of troll paladins to wow. This is a protest thread.
Thank you for all of the awesome posts in my thread. I actually ran out of likes.
You guys rock!
It’s another case of Tauren Sun Druids and being Paladin-equivalents.
They aren’t actually Paladins.
They simply mimic the same spells and abilities of Paladins close enough, that their in-game representation is as a Paladin, even though their story is more about a holy warrior of the Loa.
And WE be bein’ blamed fer da necromancy ja’ll be bringin’ back wit dis thread.
We be da original holy warriors, we be da original guardians of kings. Da Loa be not so different den ja space goats getting der light powas from dimensional windchimes.
I think there might be more undead trolls than living trolls in Azeroth. Troll “Paladins” are an abomination.
Stares meaningfully at all the undead humans in nearly every zone , dungeon, and raid in the game
What a great post. Definitely worth necroing the thread for.
Lets be honest here I love paladins and glad they came to horde. Just like I am sure a lot of you alliance(maybe not you specifically) love that you guys can have shamans. As that’s what your talking about now is limiting class choices due to factions. Which would then bring back the old war that was going on in vanilla who was better paladins or shamans. And we all know there was plenty shamans running around with 2h in vanilla 1 shotting the alliance bubble boys. and laughing about it. And I am sure you alliance bubble boys did the same to us. How ever now to go with this arguement, I could see the Vulpera being Paladins more than the Zandalari. Tauren paladins were enabled because of sun worship. I could see the vulpera loving the light form the sun which allowed them to be paladins.
And for anyone that made their be paladin back in the day we did not get our paladin power from religion we stole it. Blood elves captured a Naaru and drained its power which corrupted it. Blizzard then used that Naaru as a boss in one of the final dungeons for tbc.
Wat ya gonna do mon? I’m waitin.
But we look fantastic in Plate! Except for mine atm, forgot to visit the transmogrifier before I logged out lol
I think class/race restrictions are dumb. There’s been enough co-mingling and learning now that every class/race combination should be available to us players. Every race can be monks. WHY? They learned it from the pandas. Cool. Why can’t every race learn to be paladins, or priests, or shamans or whatever else? EVERY race has the capability of wielding magic so every race should have every class available by now.
Blizzard is silly for keeping things locked behind flimsy lore excuses when they’ve demonstrated over and over again that lore means nothing to them when it comes to race/class combinations.
The cows are just sun druids and the blood elves tortured and drained a Naaru to mock the Light and scorn the Alliance’s paladins by mimicking them. But the Zandalari Prelates actually use their faith and dedication to their chosen deity to receive a divine boon and combine it with their martial prowess.
That is literally how Paladins came to exist in this fantasy universe. Priests of the Church of the Holy Light and the Knights of Lordaeron mixing their faith and prowess to form the Silver Hand and with it a new combat discipline; the Paladin. They coined the term in Azeroth to begin with, to refer to the Knights of the Silver Hand. The Draenei did something similar millenia ago, getting their boon from the Naaru and using it for combat as Vindicators.
If there is any Horde race that deserves to be called a Paladin it is the Zandalari.
