I’m a basic Belf. A cheugy champion.
I decided to financially ruin my life by getting into painting little warhammer guys. I like orks a lot, I saw the KILLA KANS and I’m like, yah those are my guys.
My friends plan on getting together and painting little dudes and I’m pretty excited. We’re all part-time/full-time professional artists and I’m ready to spill all their expensive paints on everything.
My ork lore I made up for my guys is that they’re the glitter boiz and cover themselves in shiny rocks and stuff gems in their eyes. The glitter looks like sparks and sparks = MOAR DAKA. I’m gonna dry brush them with an old makeup brush with a pearl highlighter sheen I have and my guys will be cute.
Ohhhhhh. Oh boy. (She says with a spare bedroom loaded with Warhammer minis)
That guys enthusiasm for these sort of deals is so infectious.
'ERE WE GO
'ERE WE GO
'ERE WE GO
'ERE WE GO
But in all seriousness, if you treat the hobby as a Marathon rather than a race, it’s actually not a terrible financial burden. I myself started the 40k journey with Genestealer Cults before being seduced into Age of Sigmar with the Lumineth Realm Lords (And now the new Gitmob coming to Gloomspite Gitz), and I’ve also got a WIP Bretonnia army for The Old World, as well as several feelers into Necromunda as well. And some Sorcerer Kings from Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings by Para Bellum.
I mainly want to paint guys and i have two friends with 3D printers that are printing me some not-warhammer guys to ruin with their expensive paints. My Dad passed away two years ago and he left me all his painting stuff, so I also just want to find a way to use all this stuff and I think hanging out with my pals painting little dudes will be fun. My firend is going to print me these little fish guys from this series that I think will be fun to do little scales on them.
I really like blood bowl orks and i think they’re really fun. I don’t really plan to play Warhammer but lets say I do, at least blood bowl guys are pretty versatile and I can put them in a 40k or Fantasy setting. Also you get a gaggle of different guys to choose from. The biggest purchase is I’m going to get KILLA KANZ because that’s basically what made me get into this lmao. Silly kan guys with guns attached to them and powered by imagination.
Even if you don’t play, its a very therapeutic hobby. Throw on a podcast and just paint for a while. Funnily enough, I’ve stumbled upon a Liveplay Roleplay podcast called LAWHammer run and played by former and current developers of the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying system, going through the “Enemy Within” adventure path and to say I’m hooked is an understatement. Helps everyone is older and dedicated to roleplay and not just memery which I feel plagued a lot of liveplay TTRPGs because they’re trying to feed an algorithim.
“Who could it be? Believe it or not it’s just me.”
Funny thing is I always hear bad things about warhammer people but honestly, the moment I dropped, I’m gonna paint little guys, its like saying bloody mary three times but instead of a horrible curse it’s all these folks crawling out of the ceiling being like AWESOME I LOVE PAINTING GUYS HERES MY GUYS AND HERES SOME TIPS AND HELP ON PAINTING GUYS
anyway, I haven’t even started but I’m also just having fun chatting about it with people
I’m not vaguely interested in Warhammer, but the idea of painting the little guys actually has me interested.
My friends and I are all entering our mid to late 30s and we all joke about the Dadification we are all slowly succumbing to. My partner wants to start doing woodworking, another friend started getting into dioramas, someone is really into BBQ/smoking meats, everyone is getting power tools and lots of people are into mini painting.
otherwise, i know the lore form a high level threw pop culture osmosis so I’m not going into this super blind. I’ve just been mostly apathetic (?) about it I guess. It’s not that I disliked the series or anything and I know there’s a lot of history/lore but I just haven’t had the energy to invest myself into it until now when trying to find the perfect guys to paint lol
I got the ASOIAF war game minis and was all in on making my Baratheon knights look awesome while listening to the books again. As far as money to time spent ratios go, painting minis is pretty good bang for your buck.
Painting minis can be really relaxing while doing something else. If you’re participating in an RP in-game, or doing some kind of D&D online (like Roll 20), you can listen along or read along until it’s your turn while you cut, glue and paint.
Things I found that are helpful include a desk lamp, a magnifying glass, and definitely grab one of those mini holders so you can easily rotate it or place it how you want.
Oh, and get something to mix paints on. Can be a plate or lid if you’re cheap.
I never saw the appeal of painting minis…
Are you more of a painter of abstract art? Maybe stop motion stick figure painting?
…holy sh…yeah… this is about one of the best things I have seen all year…
First episodes are out on Amazon Prime.
Just started the warhammer one. They look great but their runtimes are so short.
Yeah. If you watched Love Death and Robots on Netflix it’s very similar, they all run about 20 minutes or less. But they are still suuuuper worth a watch!
i’ve seen love death and robots- that’s a dope show
these episodes are like 9 minutes long tho lol
Oh yeah, they are pretty short. Kinda like cutscenes almost, but I have found myself almost immediately immersed in all the stories which is pretty impressive to me. Especially because some games I have never even heard of. The only episode that didn’t suck me in was the Crossfire one. It was still a fun action sequence, but I feel like there should have been a little more exposition on the two merc teams or something. Anything. I didn’t feel any connection to them like I did with the other episodes, even short as they were. That to me is some serious storytelling, to get invested in characters in such short times. Even the more out there episodes (looking at you Pac-Man) drew me in.
