I agree that some aspects of it are outright anti-consumer, such as arbitrary rate-hikes. Some companies like Fred Loya I don’t know how they even exist in how they undercut claims to such a ridiculously degree. That’s why I have to take cases to trial - because of Fred Loya lol (and sometimes State Farm)

Thank you for the rock solid packing advice Gentarn. The only thing I would like to add is that everyone should invest in an 80’s era tape recorder (and make some mix tapes for the roadtrip) as we will want to have unlimited access to music that is not streamed via the internet. Oh! Don’t forget to add extra batteries.

*A Walkman and headphones is also a solid alternative.

Cheers!

Physical media as well.

Check thrift stores and second hand shops. DVD players are still on the market and pretty dang cheap. While that’s not going to help in a bug out situation, as subscription services continue to rise in cost and shrink in quality it provides that little bit of comfort.

Books - for much the same reason.

When civilization begins to crumble and the internet gets destroyed, but we somehow still have power, what 5 games are you bringing with you into your safe space to get you through the incoming tough times?

Wow! How could I forget books! Great save Vanndrel!

That’s actually a lot harder a question than one might realize since so, so, so many games now-a-days require you to be always online just to access them.

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind

Basically my RPG pick of the litter. No net access required, and the GotY edition alone provides hundreds of hours of content with multiple ways to play. If we get a heads up that the Net’s going to be shuttered, I’m totally also snagging Tamriel Rebuilt and basically never run out of things to do for the remainder of my lifetime.

Rimworld

No Internet access required, a perfect sandbox story generator.

Pokemon

Hardest part would be figuring out which generation. I’d probably opt for Heartgold/Soulsilver, simply because you get all the new stuff + the first game area, so it’s a pretty big game.

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade

My quintessential RTS go-to since presently there’s no modern release of WarCraft 2 for me to play.

Majesty Gold HD

It’s my favorite casual city builder, takes up very little space, and just a nice relaxing time.

You hurt me with this.

I will assume we also magically still have internet connections. Let’s try:

1 WoW
2 CK3
3 ESO
4 Minecraft
5 Civ

I’m looking for repeat playability. That kicks a lot of games off my list. Honorable mention to Baldur’s Gate 3, Hades and Stardew Valley.

I am, alas, just a queer that likes vampires, so Anne Rice had me from the minute Interview with the Vampire was just a story about a man complaining about his ex boyfriend for 400 pages.

I also happen to like body horror, and Claudia stands out as a particularly poignant body horror example. I feel like “immortal child” tropes have been poisoned by people who like them a certain way, but Claudia is usually what I like out of the trope: the unrelenting horror of being a child forever. I hated childhood. Despised it with every core of my being. My recurring stress nightmare is being sent back. Claudia is that horror magnified-- the idea of being mentally more aware and intelligent than your caregivers believe, but being forced into the role of a doll. So she speaks to me in some way. (Kirsten Dunst also KILLS IT in her role; like holy moly the freakout scene has stuck with me for years. Chilling to the bone.)

The new Interview with the Vampire leans into the idea that you can’t trust half the things Louis says, and I love that. It also shows me Lestat and Louis kissing (among other things) so I’m pretty pleased. I also just love that Lestat gets to be a horrible chaotic bisexual on screen, and he’s my little meow meow, and the new actor is so good at playing him.

Also editing in my 5 games:

  • Divinity Original Sin 2
  • Starbound
  • Darkest Dungeon
  • Diablo 3 (probs the switch version u can play offline, otherwise i settle for diablo 2)
  • the sims 2

Also tempted to say Wii Music or Rock Band instead of Darkest Dungeon because that would be fun if I’m in the apocalypse with other people.

It’s hilarious how it took 30+ years for us as a society to finally be able to sum up this iconic novel with that particular sentence. Prior to that, it was very “they were roommates” and “wow, Lestat is such a bad friend.”

She honestly was a standout in the original film and it chills me to this day. Tom Cruise, who I have several reservations with, surprisingly played a good, creepy Lestat. He’s the Lestat from Louie’s skewed point of view.

Other castings (Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas) were a little less so. I love Banderas but he was miscast as Armand and so was Pitt as Louie, imo.

Good! It was one of my first unreliable narrator novels other than Edgar Allan Poe. I also love how Lestat is such an egotistical prat that he comes out with his own skewed book to “clear the record.” Such a great series.

Well, I’m interested. The horror elements of Claudia has left its scars but the original story of Louie talking crap about his vampire ex of 200-some years is still hilarious to me and I’m glad this adaptation seems to be doing it more justice than the original movie. The original movie was surprisingly decent but where it failed left so much room for improvement by a better cast and crew, not to mention a TV show format.

I wish that I didn’t feel compelled to say you are right. I wish I could say there are some good points there but there’s a lot of over reaction there. I wish I could say oh, that’s just satire.

I just spent 45 minutes of my life trying to explain to someone about tariffs, the history of tariffs in the US, The Constitution, and aspects of Constitutional law. (in a former life a couple of decades ago I was a history major with a minor in government…and philosphy…and anthropology…and art. I actually have more hours in just pure history (half of them in US history) courses than most people with a PhD, I just never got around to graduating. Don’t judge me.) I don’t have words right now.

I just can’t get into TWW3. Its weird. I love TWW2, but 3 just feels like such a downgrade. Worse graphics on higher settings, obnoxious outline over troops, terrible UI, and the mono-god factions dont feel good to play or fight against.

I was wandering around Stormwind like Saturday or Sunday night and there was somebody trying to explain tariffs in trade chat. Somehow the conversation ended up turning into a discussion about fast food restaurants. I love WrA! =D

Ps:

No piece of paper is worth passing judgement on another.

Cheers.

  • Civ 5
  • Minecraft
  • Dwarf Fortress
  • Super Mario World
  • Yoshi’s Island

Super Mario All Stars was a tough choice to drop from the list. I am still iffy about Dwarf Fortress because I stopped playing recently due to performance issues, I haven’t checked to see if there has been patch fixes. My last fortress the underground levels kept spawning hostile mobs and it reached like a critical point my game just takes forever to load/process because there’s just too much crap going on in those levels I’ve sealed off and abandoned as you do when you dig too deep.

I would also put WoW Wrath classic on the list but you’d need internet for that but if you could single player, play it some how without Internet I would take it. The zones are fun to lose yourself in. Esp if I could get SoD realm access.

My problem is that most of my games will go away because you have to have internet to play them. However, I do have access to:

Civ I, the original
Simcity, the original
Age of Empires
Age of Mythology
Warcraft
and Railroad Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon.

Why would I still be playing games if the real apocalypse was a thing?

To keep your sanity as you starve.

nah. I would do well in an apocalypse.

Farmer Norman would head into the wilderness to live off radioactive fish and pumpkin seeds.

Maybe you’d let yourself play a little valheim as a treat after a long day of mutated pumpkin farming.

How did you like WotR over Kingmaker, if you played both?

I tried to get into WotR, and I made it to that first city you conquer after taking command of the crusade. I enjoyed the companions for the most part, though I think I still prefer Kingmaker. Am I missing out?

Especially after BG3, those games are tough to go back to. The turned based mode just seems lackluster and the fights are so often that it becomes a little annoying, trying to manage a party of six.
