WoW sent me to a fake blizzard site after downloading Overwolf

Maybe about 1/5 which doesn’t bother me since I will do the ad free subscription when it becomes available. As for malware from ads I once got a virus from a WoWHead ad which is one of the reasons I have their Premium subscription

I switched to Wowup about 6 months ago. I have read too much garbage about OverWolf and will not DL it. I’ll make donations to the addon creators directly so there’s no need to worry about “ad free” subscriptions.

I never had that popup.

No change in EULA. /shrug

Don’t know why you haven’t gotten it yet… everyone will at some point soon. :man_shrugging:

i’m just curious why i have to pay for another thing just to not have ads or malware, which i truly believe. i already pay for wowhead cause this crap and overwolf sure sounds like the same deal. ya i know you can play wow with no addons but evidently blizz thinks some are needed or they wouldn’t of bought out the ones they have like carbonite, which by the way carbonite maps way better always will be, and did they not like buy dbm or some stuff. anyway i’m tired of paying for stuff just to play your game, how about do it yourself least i somewhat trust you not these garbage websites floating around like wowhead and overwolf. i’d even pay more for monthly sub to have you guys do it. i’m just glad i got rid of most of mine just bare necessities i use now.
it would never come up if y’all took care of it yourself

Charles looking hella suspicious.

I’ve been using wowup for addon installation. Does what i want it to without random ads

I’ve been testing out Overwolf and have had no issues. It’s just like Twitch in both good and bad ways.

It’s pretty clear the OP has little technical expertise.

What??? Nobody bought Carbonite it changed addon authors some years ago. The only thing Blizzard did was stop the original authors from charging for it.

I’d have no issues with Overwolf if the overlay wasn’t required, the ads made no noise, no movement, no popups. DEFINITELY no popups. And auto closes 100% completely when the X is pressed. I don’t want that crap running in the background either.

But they can’t seem to run ads without their crappy overlay program so yeah, no thanks.

probably thought “surely its not as bad as everyone says, probably just a bunch of doom and gloom of people being forced to change”

Bunch of old out of touch conspiracy theorists

you’re a towel

This is an option in settings it closes both CurseForge and Overwolf nothing is left running in the background. This is how I have mine set as well as not allowing auto start.

I never even see Overwolf or any overlays I simply open CurseForge update addons and exit.

Which is accurate… I like it so much better than Twitch.

Looking back at all your postings lately, I think it fair to ask this question. Do you work or are you associated with Overwolf?

Well the malware aside, that is an issue with the service that sells them the ad stream not vetting their stuff better. The reason they have an option to pay to not see the ads is simple, not only does running such a large repo cost money but they are giving the mod authors the majority if the money they make from both (the ads income or the membership).

There is no upside in Blizzard managing their own mod repo. I am sure the last thing they want to see is people coming here after a major patch and demanding Blizzard “fix their broken mods”.

This is all I could find but to be honest I didn’t spend much time looking, I use Ajour

https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwolf/comments/7jkjhw/trojan_found/

It’s from 2017 so it’s unlikely to be fake news planted by some wow nerd but it was also addressed by OW staff and they claim it was a false positive.

Another from 2017 with the same situation

https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwolf/comments/7azcgh/windows_defender_says_overwolf_has_malware/

I think what is going on here is that some people are misusing or misrepresenting their use of words (malware) or some people are misunderstanding their use of the words. Some people are defining malware thusly:

“I pay per MB for internet, OW has an ad, the ad uses bandwidth which costs me money, costing me money is a negative and therefore it is malware”

And some people I don’t think that they mean that it is literally malware I think they mean that it is malware in the way that Blizz slaps us in the face or that certain specs are unplayable and do 0 dps. I think it is wow player embellishing and hyperbole.
I think this whole situation is dumb and is persisting because of a lack of understanding.

Nope I’m just supporting a service I like. I’ve hated using Twitch for addons. I still miss using the old Curse Client that was available before Twitch.

I’ve used WowUp and tried Ajour both work fine just not Cursebreaker because it lacks a UI. I simply prefer the CurseForge app.

I downloaded Overwolf for Hearthstone back in the day for the Hearthstone arena helper thing. All I wanted was the Hearthstone bit of Overwolf, but it forces you to install every part of it, even the parts for games you don’t play. So I ended up having a bunch of stuff installed that I didn’t want. It’s full of malware, and should be heavily avoided. The people saying “it’s fine” or “I like it” either work for Overwolf, or are unaware of the malware.
