WoW sent me to a fake blizzard site after downloading Overwolf

I’ve never like Norton or McAfee because they are basically malware installed on your computer. Norton is effective, but it slows down your computer. Granted this was awhile ago when cpu wasn’t as fast as it is now so maybe it isn’t an issue anymore so my not liking them could be outdated lol.

If Overwolf is actually paying these addon makers. I wouldn’t be surprised if individually being able to install addons will go the way of the dodo eventually. As addon creators wanting to get money will make them only available via overwolf. Sure the individual addon would probably find its way out into the darker side of the web where you find pirated things… But that isn’t without its own risks if you choose to use those sites. They tend to be virus heavy themselves.

I know of no addon authors who signed any such exclusivity contracts with Curseforge or Overwolf.

That sort of thing would be part of the addon’s license and I know of no addons that use such a licensing

Well, the only addon I truly can’t live without is elvui, so if it goes that way, it goes that way. I’ll live. if they make the addon manager a requirement, then I’ll just live without those addons I can’t get straight from the creator. I’m happy to support addon creators. I’d even do a sub-based app for that very purpose. But I won’t subject myself and/or my machine to a company that has this kind of shenaniganry following it everywhere it goes. They should have picked something people trust. It was a bad call. It just was.

alot of addon authors only updated on curse because they did pay them, overwolf wont be any different. the real question is when (not if) theyre going to lock down curseforge from 3rd party addon managers like wowup ajour etc etc

You have evidence of an app written under the Overwolf framework that has ads not that the curseforge app has them in game. An app not written by the Overwolf team but rather developed by the guys at Icy veins.

I know of no wow addons that have in game advertising in them as Blizzard frowns on that in their guidelines.

Yeah, antivirus software has been caught multiple times doing shady crap like MITMing peoples’ internet traffic and preventing itself from being uninstalled. Antivirus being malware itself isn’t far from the truth.

There is also concern that the ads are targetted ads, which would indicate that it is collecting personal information. It not being a search engine can’t be doing it from your search history unless it is using some form of spyware. It also requires you to grant it access to a lot of your personal information such as location tracking.

I just got the updated EULA and didn’t get sent to a “fake Blizzard site”. Clean your computer out.

Why does it feel like you have no clue what you are talking about. I have no association with Overwolf and I have admitted that they have a checkered past. The difference is I am willing to give them a chance because in the end, I can just uninstall the app if I don’t like it.

News flash, just because someone has a different opinion on something doesn’t mean they are actively working for them. It just means they are capable of making up their own minds and don’t parrot the internet.

I’ve been using OverWolf for a week now with no issues. I have Malware Bytes Professional and use CCleaner, but other than a message to allow ads for the support of Mod Authors, OverWolf seems fine.

I ticked the box to fully shut down when I exit, and it seems to. No evidence in my Task Manager.

I hope nothing goes wrong. Is there another option? :seedling:

Here’s the proof as to who has written the apps that people are concerned about -

I too have been doing regular malware bytes scan (and only as I have it set to automatically do it)

I know my malware bytes is working as it pings when I have my torrent client running. There’s also certain Microsoft esssentials tools that it freaks out over which is kinda amusing not gonna lie

And yet I saw something where the creator of wowup had talks with the Overwolf people where they basically said no to the idea of him hosting apps which Overwolf hosts. I would assume they have some kind of control if thats the case.

Yeah no that was never a part of the ongoing conversation the author is having with the Overwolf team.

Well this is kinda news to me, i usually just download the addons from the Curseforge page and install them manually, will i have malware?

I dont use any apps that automatically updates the addons

Not just from that No.

Hey, looks like Hots is getting new heroes after all!

New hero confirmed: Charles, 2016 Trump Voter.

Looks like I’ve got a new main!

(All jokes aside those ads look hella intrusive)
