Having the best gear means you have the best gear.
Doesn’t matter how someone earned their 420 ilvl when you’re in blues trying to compete.

You don’t unlock access to those things before they are available to other people, no, but you max out vault rewards by buying carries and you can pay to be carried through mythic without even touching normal.
I get the feel that a lot of people that take advantage of these things don’t want to admit that it is p2w because it would diminish their accomplishments, if only in their own heads.
Are you implying that people need to pay tokens in order to get past blues?
I’ll let you in on a secret… I used this neat little trick called “playing the game” to get a full set of epic gear from raids and dungeons. Wowzers!
I’m also not sure who we’re competing with. What do I win if I do the most damage in my raid group. Does the boss drop an extra piece of loot only for me? If that’s supposed to happen then I have some bugs to report…
No… I didn’t say that at all.
Pay attention to the quotes text. “They mean nothing if you didn’t earn them” puts all the context you need there, hoss.
Let’s not get upset because our reading comprehension skills are a bit rusty.
Please don’t respond with paragraphs, I don’t actually care.
Love,

being in bis isn’t winning to me though lmao
it’s a stepping stone, sure but not winning
If you were to buy mythic raid carries with gold you’ve earned by playing the game and not purchased with real money is that still p2w?

From what the forums tell me, true end game “winning” is having transmogs, which can definitely be purchased not only in game but through the shop as well.
yea but what if that isn’t winning to me either
forums be wild
It’s actually pay to lose. You’re paying to pay to play, seems like a huge L in my opinion.
And the very fact that you need another player to do it means it’s very much impossible to gain an advantage over someone else that didn’t pay, which is usually the main definition of pay to win.
You want true pay to win? Pick a random multiplayer game on mobile that’s free to play.
If that"s true than the other big MMO is p2w. That games cosmetic shop is massive.
Because at least originally before it meant “you can spend money on anything in game” P2W referred to mechanics that locked player power behind the cash shop, allowing a whale to spend their way to the top of the leaderboard.
When you buy a run in wow you are paying someone who generally hasn’t bought their power, but had the ability to gain power as a group to carry you through something. I just find it hard to call it p2w when it requires people to be better with paying than the people supposedly paying to win.
The problem was that it wasn’t. Gold sellers loved to do stuff like hack accounts and sell off everything in it for some quick gold and then use the carcass to advertise their service.
But do the people who carry them paying to get to the point to carry others? It feels odd to label it winning when the system requires others to get there before the people who pay in order for it to work.
Look, monetization is an issue with games, I just feel like P2W is a specific form of it that’s very predatory and gets used to cover a lot of ground that doesn’t fit the definition.
shrug
Don’t play “the other big MMO” so I don’t have an opinion on it, but sure, agreed.
Sounds like a smart guy.
You’re right, WoW is fully monetized and completely P2W with a very loud minority screaming that it isn’t while devouring tokens like a binge/purge bulemic girl at Baskin Robbins after a breakup.
ya maybe if u consider buying a run “winning” lmao
not really a black and white answer sadly. buying a run isn’t winning for me nor will it ever will be. neither is being in bis.
If there’s no winning then there’s a whole lot of paying to lose going on.
sounds about right then, yea i would consider it pay to lose
no one who actually plays the game considers buying a run or getting gear “winning”
The majority don’t care one way or another. I don’t believe this game is p2w. I’ve explained why in this thread, but I really don’t care either way.
Paying to be behind decent players no matter what, and having to do it every tier sure sounds like paying to lose to me.
same reason paying for enchantments, potions, flasks, and other equipment isnt considered pay-2-win.
its merely convenience, someone makes those things you pay for the services, blizzard added tokens, so we can buy those tokens for game time with gold.
or just add 15$'s too our account…
