Worst pre-expansion event ever?

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Blizz Devs do NOT appear to play their own game. They make the same careless design decisions (not taking into account the fact that a massively multiplayer role playing game has…massive amounts of players that are all trying to do the same time-constrained content in events like this; designing as if they’re TRYING to feed the trolls).

There’s also zero awareness or respect for player time. It’s like they think we can fit in Remix AND Awakened Raids AND grind a zillion residual echos (in an event where the boss is only every 90 minutes, is dead five minutes in, AND you can literally miss the tag even if you’re in the zone). I mean, who needs sleep, or going to work/school, or family time/touching grass now and again, right?

Warbands were supposed to support alts, and yet, aside from this miserable, tone deaf event, they “designed a new” (aka broke) the character screen, which seems to be made for people with only a handful of characters on a single realm.

As if that didn’t have me cranky enough today, I’ve yet again had to deal with the clueless decision someone made to have an “edit mode” profile become the setting on EVERY computer you log onto - as if every PC has exactly the same monitor resolution (or video card to support a given resolution) - forcing you to swap the setting on EVERY character, EVERY time you change between PCs. People have been complaining about this for almost TWO YEARS, and no change is in sight.

The general lack of awareness, consideration, or even common sense, shown in every possible way, is just so over the top it’s infuriating.

I mean, clearly they don’t play their own events, or even they’d have to admit how player antagonistic this ish is.

Post Edit: This comment is no longer valid due to a hot fix.
As of 8/1/2024 the event now cycles perpetually with no downtime. This means you can complete your Heirloom Ring and farming at your leisure, returning agency back to the players (As it always should be). This demonstrates Blizzard hearing player feedback, and being willing to let us prioritize our time the way we want. There are still a couple things i’d like to see changed, but otherwise I consider this event a fun and engaging way to level up alts.

Things i’d like to see changed:

  1. Currently when you log into your alt, you get a “gear update” which gives you gear that’s like 327 or something, but the event only drops gear that’s like 307. This means that every drop is useless as it will never actually scale above what you already have until you ding 70 and can start equipping the 480+ gear drops. I’d like to see the drops scaled up so that they are better than level 60 gear, but you’ll hit 70 so fast this isn’t a big deal, it’s just a weird thing, like why introduce gear that’s weaker than base line and make it a random drop?

  2. Blizzard knows we funnel our currency from our alts to our main, that’s why they made the currency system an import function rather than an export function. I’d like to see a “Transfer All” button instead of typing out the numbers of each currency for each alt. This isn’t a big deal but would polish off this QoL feature.

  3. I’d still like to see tagging removed from the requirements to gain experience/credit, meaning I want people to get rewards even if they didn’t tag the mob. I realize this means people will sit around leeching, and I realize that is bad, but I think it’s better to not punish people who weren’t fast enough to 1-shot everything in the area and de-prioritize tag sniping. I don’t care if a few bums abuse this, people will always find ways to bum. I notice that blizzard has made strides to reduce tagging requirements, so it is clear we’re moving in this direction anyway.

Below is my original comment unchanged, which again, is now outdated and most of it doesn’t apply anymore.

this is the first time I have ever logged out due to boredom. missed 2 of the bosses. 2 others didn’t spawn. so far only got 1 loot drop not counting the quest turn in, and I played all day. zones are empty because no one wants to play. 0 people in group finder, which you can’t use until level 50 so leveling an alt requires you to have a group ahead of time unless your server isn’t dead. and even then you get like 30 exp per kill so leveling from 10-70 just sounds like an absolute nightmare, you could level faster doing literally anything else. when you get a good group that is spaced out and getting the maximum amount of exp you can level pretty quickly, but that requires so many stars to align.

And all of that are the positives of the event.
this is genuinely just unengaging, boring, with no rewards to speak of except another wyvern/gryphon reskin and some gear you’ll replace with quest gear as soon as the expansion drops.

the only thing worth doing is getting the heirloom ring. after that, I’m logging out til the expansion drops, this is a waste of time and not even a fun waste of time.

and stop making us compete for tags. just give everyone credit/exp/currency if they are in the area. i dont care if some people sit there doing nothing soaking up rewards, that happens anyway, its worse when people are actually trying to engage with this awful gameplay and still get nothing because they aren’t able to spam multishot. blizz already knows competing for tags isn’t fun gameplay because they went from faction tags to player tags, meaning you can share tags with enemy faction now, this proves blizz knows mob tagging isn’t fun gameplay, so just abandon that awful system and let people get rewarded regardless of “tagging”.

and remove the arbitrary 90 minute timer. there’s no reason for it, and blizz admits there’s no reason for it because they already announced it’ll be a reduced timer overtime, which proves its arbitrary and only exists to time gate your progress.

tl;dr
if this event is representative of The War Within, then it sounds like it’s just designed to farm user metrics rather than actually producing a fun gaming environment. Honestly if they just removed the requirement to tag mobs and tripled the number of mobs that spawned, while making the big boss a 5 minute respawn timer, that would at least give us something to do in this event that feels rewarding even if its just the same gameplay loop we’ve been playing for 20 years. the point is to give us something to do that isn’t boring, but as it stands, all we’re doing it waiting around doing nothing and then still missing out on credit because we didn’t tag the mob or we didn’t get there fast enough.

thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Its classic blizzard apparently, 1 step forward 2 step backs. You could always put on your tin foil hat. Its this way on purpose so they can farm some good will when they “fix” it.

I’d take a tabard over this.

I don’t think the event is bad itself, but I think the event being every hour is just not good with how fast the boss can die. It needs to be every 30 minutes. It is very arbitrary to be waiting 2 or 3 weeks to lower the event time, I’m not sure why there are plans to do that when it really should just be done now.

It is a pretty generic event overall though. There isn’t really much exciting about it. The mobs die extremely fast so if you are not a class with a ranged instant damage ability that is spammable this will suck hard for you if you want to farm echoes, but farming is also barely worthwhile because you only get 1-2 per mob.

I think that making people wait to play your game is a horrible business plan and even worse for “a game”. I play the game for fun and a release. Waiting and traveling to wait, again, is neither. People made to wait will end up having time to remember things that would be more fun.

Shadowland/Legion was a fun general event to earn ‘$’… and elemental items for a ‘trinket’… it was around the clock type in that area and a break in between… but you didn’t miss the whole friggen thing if you weren’t there in the first 5 mins? Am I wrong?

Wait until you see what they’re charging for the Warbank slots. LOL

Agreed. The timer needs to be pared back.

They should just move it to them popping faster right away. The way they drag these things out is exactly why they are bad. It’s not much content that they push longer with time gating, grinding, and over priced everything. This should be a one week long event with no cap on number of times you do it and a faster timer. Not a month.

One and the half hours of waiting. Six minutes later the boss is down. My game was mostly frozen in Searing Gorge. I barely managed to reach the boss in time. If I had made ANY attempt at helping at spawning the boss I would have failed. And anything that isn’t an instant attack and I would probably failed at tapping the boss.

and horrible music… doo doo doo dah, doo doo doo da da…doo doo doo dah dah dah… ah ooh…

No Dragonflight Prepatch was worse but you know see you in Midnight Prepatch when you’ll be complaining that it’s the “worst Prepatch ever”

Yep, the currency for this event is I believe very underwhelming. x1 per regular mob and x5 for the larger and lucky to tag mobs before they get deleted.

Me and my wife grinded a zone for an hour and come out with I think 300 currency, did the big boss and got up to 2500 =? Per hour.

x1 piece of gear per hour and x4 tokens per day abouts ?

Definitely a slow drip of gear and not too alt friendly

I can literally gear up with 480 pieces in the dragon isles faster and more efficient than by doing the prepatch event. its hilarious

Same. Was talkign with people I know today about the past prepatches and I legit couldn’t even remember what MoPs was. WoD’s sucked, but at least some mobs appeared.

at this point, nothing surprise me

I don’t know about worst, but I found it pretty uneventful. I waited 20 minutes to do one, and that one wasn’t fun enough to make me want to do more. The prepatch event for DF seemed much better somehow. More eventful.
