What does that even mean? Did Amazon surpass Ebay? Did Microsoft surpass Apple? Is the world only big enough for one of these entities?

No, because they know they can make bank on micro-transactions so they could just release a few more pets & cosmetic items & maybe a mount or two into the cash shop & be fine.
FFXIV does the exact same thing. You’re just choosing to approach it differently than you do WoW for some reason.
As much as people think it won’t here’s the reason why it will be:
PR is everything to a company like Blizzard. They HATE being second fiddle in anyway which is why you see them conveniently releasing stuff to compete with others. This will be a wake up call simply because of that.
Well they need to hold people accountable. Whoever has the great idea of delaying flying and then restricting its use every expansion is not doing this game any favors. It’s a disgrace

Um, what? You’re going to minimize FFXIV to FC housing and glamour? I’m an avid fan of both games, but to compare content…
FFXIV:
Storyline – Expansions build upon a consistent story arc. Personally don’t care about lore but the game is built around it.
(WoW) Soandso got corrupted for a random reason go beat them up.
Character customization – Over a million permutations in character creation (glamor)
(WoW) Hair color/type, a few skin colors and some faces? (transmog)
Housing – Small, medium, large houses and apartments
(WoW) Garrison maybe?
Raiding – Delebrum Reginae, 12 Eden encounters, 3 Copied Factory raids, Zadnor (and the other one I forgot), The Hunt
(WoW) Castle Nathria
Community/Toxicity – Veteran players are rewarded extra currency when grouped with new players, commendation system and Roulettes which keep low level dungeons relevant.
(WoW) Practically a meme
Crafting/tradeskills – You can have every job (profession) on a single character, and each job is treated as a distinct class. My Leatherworker in FF has more abilities/rotations than my Warrior in WoW.
(WoW) – Skin this animal, pick this flower, chisel this mine. Choose 2 professions, put things in a box and hit combine. I will say WoW does consumables better.
Gearing – All raids are currency based with weekly caps. Guaranteed 2-3 upgrades per week depending how ambitious you are. You also don’t need a guild to obtain end-game gear.
(WoW) – Open your vault on Tuesday and pray
What WoW does better:
PvP – Gladiator ladder, battlegrounds, etc
(FFXIV) …
Borrowed power – Covenants/reputations/etc
(FFXIV) ???
Ultimately, if you like PvP then WoW wins no contest. But FFXIV has considerably more overall content.

its like rank 60 in terms of relevance for a game surpassing a game 8th in relevance. ;D
if anything, we will end up with worse incomplete content just for the sake of getting it out. which isn’t good. the reasons for them being behind isn’t going to magically go away because a competitor has new content.
Still waiting for the private servers of Wildstar. Plenty of people want it back just for housing and playing on the hover mount. But it peaked and died then they shuttered it and only because of the dev’s the playerbase was dedicated. Those were the times and not many sci fi mmorpg at least wow has the fantasy competition going.

And in pvp even guild wars 2 offers some competition with ongoing server vs serve vs server battles going. Granted their balance is beyond crap but it’s fun with a guild or good commander’s leading you. Small scale pvp is ok but waiting to see what their new expac drops since it may be guild vs guild driven which could be really fun.
Problem on my end with wildStar is they launched the game without support for certain people’s graphics cards. Like I purchased the game and couldn’t even play it. Not allowing anyone with a Nvidia graphics card to play your game like instantly cuts your playerbase in half
