Windowed Mode - resizing quits WoW

Wouldn’t it make more sense to use the workaround where you set the resolution in the config.wtf file or use the in-game dropdown menu so you have a consistent window size the entire time? That way you aren’t having to fight against muscle memory when it comes to UI elements.

Not really - it depends on what other items I have in the background and I am monitoring. I am not looking for a consistent size. Just want to be able to drag the window to the size I want based on what I am doing that day.

Yes, there is a work around. But at the end of the day I guess I am used to applications being able to handle being resized. Odd that this one application cannot.

This is the one app that has been updated to actually use what is supposed to be the proper Metal windowserver code. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, if other app makers somehow saw this happen here and held off updating their code), Apple done screwed up and we’re stuck with this for a while. I wouldn’t even expect a fix on Apple’s end until 13.1 at the earliest. Or they could just ignore Blizzard and leave it borked like they did the Intel IGP bug that never got fixed in any update because by the time Apple would have fixed it machines with Intel IGPs were EOL at the retail level and they figured it wasn’t worth the bother. It’s one of the reasons macOS support is so spotty across various developers. It’s hard to develop properly for macOS when Apple’s “support” is anything but.

They wouldnt dare blame microsoft.

o.O

I feel like that comment would work better in a different forum.

'member when wow didn’t crash/freeze when we resized windows normally?

those were the good old days

How is this still not fixed??

Can we please receive an update on this issue? I have a 18:16 LG monitor and I would like to change the aspect ratio on it to be 16:9. I mainly use my Mac for work, but here and there I would like to get on my monitor that is 18:16 and game on it! Of course but only if it is 16:9, which is something that could be done in the past.

Thank you for your time.

Ever since the last couple of MacOS updates, wow will sometimes randomly switch to the desktop so the dock and finder would appear… and it would happen at the most in appropriate time. It never did that when the game had full screen and not maximized window option.

There is a hidden option to still force that Katherena, I’ll let tia come in and help with that.

You can force a special “feature” Rommax put in for players like myself (and you) that will keep WoW in the foreground permanently. To do so, open the config.wtf file and search for the following:

ExclusiveWindowMode

If you get a match, simply change the 0 at the end of that line to a 1 (make sure to keep the quotes!). If the line does not exist, then add it onto the end of the file at the bottom. The line should look like so:

SET ExclusiveWindowMode "1"

Optionally you can, while inside the game world, type the following into chat and it will activate the setting from there:

/console ExclusiveWindowMode 1

This CVAR is case sensitive and will keep WoW in the foreground permanently. However there is a caveat you need to be aware of. If you frequently use CMD-TAB or CMD-H, those are disabled in this mode. When I said it keeps WoW in the foreground permanently I wasn’t kidding. It locks out OS keyboard commands for switching apps and hiding WoW. CMD-M still works to engage windowed mode temporarily. Using CMD-M will not overwrite the ExclusiveWindowMode CVAR, but will override it as the game is now in a window and not fullscreen.

To revert to normal (current) behaviour simply remove the line from the config.wtf file or type /console ExclusiveWindowMode 0 into chat in the game world and hit Enter.

When you play in Windowed mode and accidentally click near the border of the window, and accidentally resize it by a pixel, and then your game is totally frozen, and then you have to force-quit and restart the entire client to control your character again, this is a game-breaking bug.

FIX. THIS. NOW. BLIZZARD.

We, the customers, pay you over $15 MILLION each month. There is NO REASON you can’t fix this. Nothing is stopping you from fixing this, only your laziness, stinginess, and apathy.

How the HELHEIM is this still not fixed?!?!? It’s been SEVEN MONTHS and the game is still unplayable in Windowed mode!

Blizzard can’t even fix all the things that actually are their fault. They are absolutely not going to fix something that isn’t. You got your answer on this already, they are going to continue to work with apple to try and get the issue fixed on their end. Unfortunately that sometimes does take YEARS since apple cares very little about metal/driver bugs until they affect one of their own programs.

Blizzard can simply revert their code to the version that worked. Why do you keep defending them leaving their customers with a broken product?

Just a FYI.

I have been experiencing this in the latest beta build. Getting my windowed view to the desired size took about 5 or 6 restarts.

I have been using an in game macro to resize the window.

It toggles the size to full screen and then to the desired size. In addition, switching from full screen to windowed allows for a one time resize without freezing in case of an accidental mouse click on the window’s border. Here is an example that I found on the EU forums:

/console gxWindowedResolution 2720x1387
/run SetCVar("gxMaximize",1-GetCVar("gxMaximize"))
/console gxrestart

Put all the above into one macro. The values used in height or width cannot extend into the Dock.

Thanks. That was going to be next questions. I knew there was a command for it.

I think gxWindowedResolution is a setting in the config file. I might try that.

Followup:
In the config file I use: SET gxWindowedResolution “3840x2160” (this is my native screen resolution)

Then from the in-game graphics settings, I set Render Scale to 50%

With these settings, I use cmd-M to toggle between fullscreen and window, with my window being 1920x1080. Which gives me adequate room around the window to interact with my desktop.

Set your Dock to auto-hide. That should remove any interference from it when it comes to available resolutions. For what it’s worth this is one aspect of the OS I truly wish I could just shut off with a key combo for when I’m gaming. Between it stealing focus if you aren’t using the accessibility feature Rommax put in so I and others like me could continue to play and the obnoxious pop-in every time you move the mouse to the bottom of the screen outside of games, I hate the Dock with a passion. It’s why I hate Windows 11 as well, at least until we can make it behave like Windows 10.

Fix This. I’m posted many months ago and many months later with a few Apple Software patches later and still broken. Go back to older code, or skip Metal and go back to OpenGL or something already. Geez.
