In a Riot game? I thought that League was fine, as it’s just cosmetics from the shop.
12m down to 1m. Those players went somewhere.
I would expect Riot to dominate the genre of all the current and upcoming offerings. In terms of funding, talent, recent track record, and an existing (massive) ip to pull from, they certainly have all the pieces they need to pull it off. Ghostcrawler has indicated previously that it is likely to emphasize compelling group content (aka raids). It could very well be poised to be to WoW what WoW was to EQ, but we’ll see.
Sometimes I LOL,
Sometimes I LMAO,
Very really do I ROFL

Checked out the art style and I am in!!!
do you have a source for that or is that just how you feel inside? Even if we were to trust the top google result (which we shouldnt) it gives a vastly different number than what you report?
Wowhead?
mmonews?
Reddit?
oh god…are you referencing the bellular youtube video for your math??
I dunno, is it gonna be better than WOW?
I was pretty sure I was ride-or-die for FFXI back in the day, I even bought the new expansion on the same day I bought launch WoW, but I ended up having so much more fun and so much of a less frustrating time in WoW I ended up canceling my subscription to FFXI with zero fanfare a couple of months later when I realized I wasn’t using it anymore.
Riot has an opportunity to give me that same kind of experience with their new game. Will they? I don’t know, we’ll see. I tried Wildstar when it came out, and it was fun, but not significantly more fun than WoW to overcome my general inertia and sunk cost. I dabbled in City of Heroes over time, but WoW was still more fun. I played a little FFXIV and it was pretty good, but not that much more good.
That’s the hurdle, basically. If they can not only match WoW but provide a significantly better player experience, they’ll win in the end. To do that, they’ll likely need to alleviate almost all of the current pain points of WoW. We’ll see if they can.
Some of it is.
One thing Riot can provide that WoW can’t is fresh content. WoW players are burnt out, and I think it’s going to take a miracle for Blizzard to make something that feels truly fresh with their scaled back development crew. Riot will be able to pop out many years of content all at once and capitalize on how slow Blizzard has been.
We don’t know what WoW’s current numbers are. Anyone claiming one million is 100% making it up.
But that decline was over a period of like 12 years. People change, lives changes, interests change. There’s any number of reasons one would eventually leave WoW. But a decline is expected, 12 million is unsustainable.
The MMO market is really difficult to establish new games. The current kings are successful because they built up that success over a long period of time. Many years. New MMOs that appear have a smaller window to make a good impression or like New World they’ll crash and burn. It’s really difficult to create and maintain a steady playerbase.
So LoL still remains to be seen how it’ll play out. Just because it looks pretty right now and they talk a big game doesn’t mean much until we actually see it release. But who knows, maybe it will be a good game and do well!
Zomg me too! That was my MMO before WoW, and I thought WoW could not possibly compete tbh. FFXI was so aesthetically pleasing imo. The airship rides and boat rides, the slow grind…it was kind of magical.
But then I suddenly struggled to go back to the auto-attack based combat, as much as I missed that game. WoW stole my heart and I straight up never saw it coming.
Probably not
Truth is no MMO available is incredible or worth playing - including WoW. AoC will be a gimmick similar to New World and every other MMO that is the “WoW killer”. Gets old seeing the same one trick over and over. MMO as a genre is pretty lackluster.
Even if I were laughably generous and estimated current subs at 5m, that’s still 7m players down from the peak. “WoW is dead!” is a separate argument from “massive numbers of players have moved on.”
I really like Riot, so maybe
I think my RTS and MOBA days are behind me. Same goes for most FPS.
It gives me way too much stress and anxiety. I used to lose all control in those games and rage quit hard.
It’s going to be a regular MMO and I doubt it’s going to be remotely close to a MOBA or RTS. Riot already has LoL. There’s no reason for them to hurt their own numbers when they could go after a totally different market segment.
No.
But every time I hear about LoL all I hear are people saying how toxic it is and how it’s the most toxic game in existence currently so I will be making a character and sitting in chat to see this toxicity first hand
I feel like League of Legends was like Dubstep music when it came out. Everyone seemed to like it but me.
So you have absolutely 0 source? gotcha
How long ago was new world? That was the wow killer wasn’t it?
Or was the wow killer the new ff expac?
It’s hard to keep up lol.
If it’s good and has something equal or better than m+ then ill check out any game
